Fair Isle (stn. no. 03008) is located between the Orkney and Shetland Islands at about 59.5N 1.6W. -------------------------quotes begin------------------------ Fair Isle, Monday 3rd Jan Gale F8 increased severe gale F9 0535z and to storm F10 0625z. Increased further to violent storm F11 0830z and to hurricane F12 0930-0940z. Easing after 0940z to F10. Direction throughout 210-230 deg. Maximum gust so far 82kt and still blowing F10 at 1140z. Ridiculous thing is - despite the vis of 1200 - 1800m - I cannot, as a land station, report blowing spray!! So far it's been a reasonably steady wind (gust factor about 1.3) but, if the direction goes more W'ly - or showers develop - this could increase to around 1.8. Be interesting to see what happens if/when we catch the 'wrap-around' visible on the latest sat. image from Dundee. My Davis WMII above the house ridge stopped recording wind speed for a time - although the cups were still whizzing round. Guess that it's possibly a chaffed lead somewhere. 'tis a little difficult doing the obs - the trip down to the screen from the house is a little exhilarating - often overshooting the screen only to be brought to a halt as I hit the fence 10 yards downwind! Quite honestly I am enjoying this! Dave Bear in mind that if this morning's storm had hit London then it would have been described as the 'Storm of the Century - or a 1 in 100-200 year event. Here in the Northern Isles such a storm (F11 to F12) can be expected on average at least once or twice each winter! While I have heard of some damage in parts of Shetland caused by today's winds this has been, on the whole, relatively minor. On Fair Isle there was none. I did have an interesting time trying to stop my three propane cylinders from blowing over. To give a wider base they are tied together - a total weight of around 110-130kg. As they are positioned at the end of the house, with the wind funneling through the gap between barn and house I first had to fasten a rope to a ground anchor before 'lowering' myself down-wind. When I reached the cylinders the rope helped me maintain my feet and position against the strength of the wind while I tied them down with the rope! Because of the storms all helicopter movements in the East Shetland Basin and West of Shetland fields were suspended. Two fixed-wing flights managed to get into Sumburgh late this afternoon as W'ly winds moderated to gale force (gusting 50kt). Scatsta, where the new terminal building roof suffered some damage, was also closed because of the high winds. Ferry sailings to and from Shetland have also been cancelled. Dave Fair Isle > Dave, how on earth do you keep your screen from flying away, is it > tied down?. The screen went in for the first time in December 1973. MO instructions for digging in the stand were followed - but unfortunately the first storm of January 1974 blew the screen over! I again dug in the screen, but this time put several pieces of six feet long steel piping across the bottom of the stand about a foot below the surface. I then put in about a square metre of concrete, about six inches thick, backfilled the soil and replaced the turf. The stand has been rock-steady for the past 26 years - although particular care has to be taken that the two screws attaching screen to stand remain firm. In very windy conditions the screen does vibrate and, despite rubber 'shock-absorber' pads in the thermometer clamps, I have to make sure that the minimum thermometer is set level (book says incline at 2 deg, bulb lower than stem) otherwise the index 'walks'. The grass min also has to be fastened down to prevent it from disappearing. Salt spray also adds difficulties - specially if, like me, you wear spectacles. In the short time that it takes me to get to the screen the salt deposit on my specs makes it impossible to read the thermometers. I get round this by having a hand lens (kept in a poly bag) in the screen. Under stormy SE'ly conditions, as the nearest cliffs are only 400-500 m away, salt spray also produces the equivalent of about 0.1 mm/hr in the rainguage. If it is a 'dry' gale/storm, as was yesterday's, the salt deposit on the sunshine sphere might prevent burning of the card. As it is impossible to keep clean - I would have to be out there cleaning it continuously - I wash the sphere at ob time. If a sequence of short burns is visible when the card is changed then I know that, despite the 'mist' of flying spray and low elevation, the sun was strong enough to burn a trace and a realistic estimate can be made. Yesterday it wasn't. Dave ------------------quotes end-------------------------------------- The storm was caused by a very intense low centre passing NE between Scotland and Iceland. At 0600 GMT on the 3rd it was 953 mb at about 61.0N 8.5W. The temperature at Fair Isle during the storm was about 7c. We saw a very pronounced rain foot over the area from Mt Cootha, so this is micrburst damage. The rainfoot extended about ~1km from the actual precipitation shaft, but that's just an estimate. But it was very pronounced!!! Since this is just a 15min drive to my east, I'm going to go out there and have a little look around, and then I'll put my photos in to get developed. There was also 10 cent-size hail reported from this storm. On an interesting note, most storms were low topped, and quite a few didn't even produce an anvil - with a number of storms looking like Congestus!!! -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 004 From: "John Woodbridge" [jrw at pixelcom.net] To: [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: RE: aus-wx: Eastern Brisbane Storm Damage Date: Thu, 6 Jan 2000 11:53:32 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook CWS, Build 9.0.2416 (9.0.2910.0) Importance: Normal Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Anthony. Yes I noticed this. Plenty of lightning in non-glaciated congestus. Again raises the question of charge separation in so called "warm", i.e., non glaciating clouds. But, I presume that the clouds I was looking at, were not the ones producing hail, otherwise the above comment is naturally a load of cods. Certainly we know there was plenty of cold air aloft. Around 5:00pm took photos of two massive complexes, one out near the airport with humungous (technical term) development and the other off the gold coast. Both these had anvils. As dusk fell, I noticed quite a few lightning strokes out of the clouds terminating sharply in clear air - that I am hard put to explain. The day started off very ordinary, with concerns that there might not be very many storms at all! But it panned out quite well.. by 12:30pm ish we could see our first storm in NE NSW, and soon after Congestus and Tcu started popping up all over the place.. there were some nice storms in southern SE QLD - but north was really where all the best action was (that's where Rosco and I were going at first - but changed our minds at the last minute).. I ended up taking almost 200 pictures with my digi cam! Mind you i was trying out different settings etc etc - i ended up with 80 pictures that are worthy of a place in the chase report - which will be up by this evening.. As Anthony has already pointed out, there was damage in Brisbane from a storm (which we have plenty of pictures of).. there was also a report of 50 knot winds from the Tarong Power house (roughly NW of Brisbane) - and also a report of a funnel cloud in Boonah! (which is where we were for a couple of hours - but took off east later in the afternoon).. Anthony should have some video footage of this, and (maybe!) a photo or two. We also noted the variablility in lightning activity within this storm, ranging from about 1 discharge per second, to virtually nothing and back again, with the changes happening very rapidly. There was a possible explanation for this I think - the lull coresponded pretty well with Anthony getting his camera and tripod set up, so mystery solved there :-). Seriously though, there was some regeneration along the flanking line, and I think the bursts of lighning activity corresponded to these cell coming to maturity. As noted elsewhere, maturity in this case was very low topped, with no glaciation. Oh, and its nice to have a name instead of "the ASWA bloke in Mt Crosby" - that should save a lot of time! :-) Nice to "meet" you John. Cheers, Jonty. ____________________________________________________________________ Jonty Hall jdh at vortex.shm.monash.edu.au CRC for Southern Hemisphere Meteorology Monash University Wellington Road, Clayton, Vic 3168 Ph +61 3 9905 9684 ____________________________________________________________________ On Thu, 6 Jan 2000, John Woodbridge wrote: > Around 5:00pm took photos of two massive complexes, one out near the airport > with humungous (technical term) development and the other off the gold > coast. Sorry a bit late withg this report but I am still crawling with rellies here in paradise at Evans Head. Watched yesterday's storm develop to the NW and heard thunder. Michael called and I jumped on the radar. Micheal took some pics from the Plateau (west) and I got some back end shots from here. No major damage from what I have heard....pea sized hail in Ballina from my sister there with the kids at the local supermarket complex, and similar sized hail for about 5-10 minutes in Ballina-Lennox Head-Byron Bay, followed by 15-20 minutes of what was described to me as "torrential rain". The hail was reported to be bouncing in all directions. This is similar to the size John Graham reported from his house a few blocks away. In the local media today, it was reported that hail the size of golf balls (4cm) fell in Lennox Head, with the smaller stones in Byron Bay and Ballina.
