Compared with Observatory Hill, they give an interesting picture of the interplay between seabreeze and hot N/NW stream and a fluctuating inversion. For those that don't know, Wedding Cake is in the middle of Sydney Harbour off Bradleys Head, about 5km east of Observatory Hill and about 3.5km east of Fort Denison. 66 METAR 0120 1830 01006G09KT 25.4///// ////// BV:12.5 66 METAR 0120 1900 35013G19KT 24.2///// ////// BV:126D 66 METAR 0120 1930 01017G23KT 23.6///// ////// BV:12.4 66 METAR 0120 2000 36015G19KT 23.4///// ////// BV:12.4 66 METAR 0120 2030 34012G14KT 25.0///// ////// BV:12.3 66 SPECI 0120 2037 33010G14KT 30.4///// ////// BV:12.2 66 METAR 0120 2100 27013G19KT 33.9///// ////// BV:12.2 66 METAR 0120 2130 25011G14KT 33.4///// ////// BV:12.2 66 SPECI 0120 2149 22008G13KT 27.9///// ////// BV:12.2 66 METAR 0120 2200 08007G09KT 25.1///// ////// BV:12.2 66 METAR 0120 2230 36005G06KT 25.3///// ////// BV:12.2 66 METAR 0120 2300 26004G07KT 25.3///// ////// BV:12.2 Disregard the battery voltage stuff on the right. 5.4 degrees of the jump occurred in 7 mins to 8.37pm. Crosby was 39.0. We did not get the sea breeze, so at 6:00pm it was still 37.0C. It is now a beautiful night outside under an almost full moon and a comfortable 27.5C at midnight. My weather station suggests an RH of 67%, but I don't really trust that, it is probably higher. Still very warm in the upstairs rooms, furniture & floors warm to the touch, which means the temp is still way up there in these rooms. Unfortunately, no breeze to shift the air. Looks like another scorcher tomorrow, with an official forecast of 38C for this area. Toll so far: 5 young rainforest trees damaged, 2 severely. King fern (Angiopteris evecta) surprisingly OK, but it won't take much more of this sort of weather. Side bar: Was sitting downstairs reading an hour or so ago, only to notice a large cane toad bouncing around the living room picking off insects... I had to pick it up to put outside - Yuck. Amazing how something can be simultaneously dry, leathery and squishy. John. >snip Hi Jonty, everyone.. Apparently we broke the record for the highest max in January today? The max at the aiport was 39.1 - the previous highest being 38.1 in 1985.. i got this information from someone at the BOM.. DP's were quite high in coastal parts today - Coolangatta had 32c and a DP of 25c mid afternoon.. Brisbane airport also had a temp of 33c and a DP of 24c around the same time (these are all weather underground observations - they seem quite accurate).. I also reached 38c in Redcliffe (official max) which is horribly hot for me - normally i'm 2-3c under the Brisbane max temp, but NW or Westerly winds stuck around for most of the day.. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 006 Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2000 10:07:28 -0500 From: "Leslie R. Perhaps part of this whole thing is the culture of the internet and the 'feeling' of anonymity or isolation. So much that has been said would probably never have been said in a face to face discussion. There is so much to be said for civility and kindness. This Les intends to stay here and to endeavor to get along with all......as far as that is at all possible. In my opinion nothing is to be gained by harsh words, 'flaming', insensitivity, or rudeness. In all this, I took nothing, none of Andrew's comments in a personal way. Having said all that, let me also say how very much I appreciate all the very nice comments in support of both Les's participation in this list. All I can do is speak for myself, but it has been a pleasure to make your acquaintance, to 'know' all of you, and to participate here. You all have treated me with respect and kindness throughout and have accepted me very graciously.....even me, a Yank, no less!! [S]. On the bus ride home I went from hot offshore to seabreeze about three times. In a similar situation to the airport this was most noticeable crossing the Lake Illawarra entrance. On one side of the bridge the hot west wind was rippling the water, 200m later and at the other side the NE seabreeze was still rippling the water. The seabreeze was still visible only 3-5km out to sea even at 8pm. This swinging to and fro of the seabreeze is something I have noticed on several occasions. You can always tell when a hot westerly is about to overtake the seabreeze as the air gets a faint fog look at the barrier. I would be rather interested to see that info. I have some local newspaper clips regarding the tornado that cut it's way through Smithton in '92. There were some interesting things that happened during that storm, like cows cut in half by roofing iron...... There was a period where there was quite a bit of "funnel" activity around NW tassie. That period was around 1988 to 1992, but things have been very quite since. I have observed a waterspout just off Devonport in May '88, two funnel clouds in November '88, a funnel cloud Feb 9th '89 and a mini tornado in 1990. This period also includes the Smithton tornado. I don't know if anyone else around Tassie has seen anything after this period? I think there may have been a funnel cloud observed around Hobart during the xmas storms last year, but I'm not real sure about that? --- Ira Fehlberg wrote: > Ive got some stuff on Tassie naders, just give me a > few days and ill dig it > out for ya. > > Ira Fehlberg > > > At 21:30 19/01/00 -0800, you wrote: > >G'day Miguel, > > > >I don't have any data on the tornado that occurred > in > >1979...but I do have some info on a tornado that > >ripped through Smithton in 1992. Certainly a marked contrast with November and December! (Interestingly but almost certainly coincidentally, a previous notably cool November and December, 1984, was also followed by a mid-January heatwave in Brisbane). None of the Bureau sites in Brisbane got over 40 (most seemed to be either 39 or 40) - an evenness which is quite characteristic of situations with strong offshore flow. I'd believe 41, but anyone in the Brisbane area who got more than that should take a look at their instrument exposure. (It is very unusual for a locality to get a substantially higher maximum temperature than surrounding locations. Local topography and coastal exposure more often have the effect of making maximum temperatures cooler than neighbours (because of hilltop locations or proximity to water) and minimum temperatures cooler/warmer (local topography)). It started up in NW-WA, reached CAT5 as it spun through Shark Bay then didn't waste any time racing across WA to emerge somewhere to the W of Kangaroo Is in SA. Admittedly much weaker in the higher latitudes, I'm pretty sure it got caught up in the usual evolution of warm-cored lows in that region and might have affected NZ. Archived MSL stuff would reveal the full story as would satpics. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Michael - are you taking your ski gear? I wonder how many active storm systems have started in West Australia, continued across southern Australia, and then onto NZ, without losing strength. (including polar snow producing southerly/southwesterly outbreaks)I know of one such storm system. In late May 1994, Perth and environs were battered by westerly gales and heavy rain. The westerly gales then lashed southeastern Australia, thought they were much drier by now. Then, the trough crossed the Tasman to deliver a band of spectacular (they occured at night) thunderstorms over much of the North Island.BTW, the heat affecting eastern Australia is now baking Christchuch. It's now in the high twenties. (probably like a cool summer's day in brisbane)This sentence was included in the BoM notes for Victoria issued at 11.00 this morning. "Snow showers are even possible over the higher peaks of the Alpine area on Saturday night." It's possible an odd white flake or two might survive into NSW. Makes a good contrast with more recent conditions in southern and eastern Australia. I notice at 0100z that Coolangatta AWS was reporting a DEW POINT of 26!! with dry bulb of 30 and Brisbane AP's DP 24 (with DB of 34) - sure must be very HOT and very STICKY. Just came off the phone to Jane, she's storm chasing at the moment in her "extended" lunch break She's just arrived at the beach while I was talking to her, looking to her south (I think!) She had some more information on the funnels - in the excitement of things, and from the viewers perspective, it intially appeared that the funnel actually touched down, but later reports have not yet confirmed this. You can see the thunderstorms developing quite rapidly on radar. CAPE ranges between 4000 and 6000 over most of the district (including SE QLD). The seabreeze influence has come in very early today (before 10am I think), and it's been very humid, with DP's generally ranging around the 23-24 mark at the Brisbane AP. The cap is again very high, but some more thunderstorms could possibly develop to our south later this afternoon/this evening. My thermo is mounted under the edge of sheltered South facing timber deck about 1m off the ground in full shade (partially buried amongst plants). Might not be a stephenson screen, but I feel more confident about the readings now. From time to time it has diverged markedly from what I would expect, particularly the minimums. Reading at Mt. Crosby at 11:30am was 35.5C. Still no Sea Breeze yet at Sumner (closer to the coast than Mt. Crosby) at 1:30am and while I can see storms building in the distance to the North and South, basically still full sun and HOT. Lemon had to say about respect etc. And along the lines of Lesley's "Internet Culture" thoughts, it can be quite hard/misleading when we try to express things via electronic media when there is no facial expressions, bodily gestures or even the sound or tone of ones voice. I don't know but perhaps we could enter into points of potential conflict with phrases like; "Hey, this is just my opinion..." , "I'd like to know what others think about this..." "Hey, I'd value some input regarding the idea of..." And also humour, (not humour masked as a personal attack) can be good too when dealing with potential conflict situations. Perhaps even setting time aside once a week to discuss points of conflict/questioning, so they don't build up into tension etc? That way folk know they will get a chance to air feelings and also so such discussions don't clog up the group on a continual basis. To name just a few ideas, anyway. What do others think of this? I'm assisting in research with two mates of mine (at PHD level) on conflict resolution specifically as it relates to men in various settings (no offence intended to the women here, its just we are working with male survivors of abuse) I'm learning a lot myself about the way I relate to others etc. Anyway...just some thoughts that may or may not help. Unfortunately (or fortunatley depending on your outlook), there is just bugger all vertical shear anywhere. Plenty of CAPE, and you can see that by the strength of the updrafts and the size of the overshooting tops. There's no organisation to these storms though - straight up and down in about 40 minutes. I guess you'd have to describe them as high CAPE airmass thunderstorms. Probably would have been an outrageous storm day if the wind profile had've been favourable. Tomorrow shows little change at the moment - maybe with the trough a bit closer there may be a little more organisation. I haven't had a look at any latest model runs, but I believe the wind profile is supposed to be similar tomorrow. Thoughts? I did a little storm chase in the bayside suburbs today, as a line of Cu went up, and eventually formed a small Cb on the eastern edge. I also saw some very impressive storms well to my north - as mentioned by a few others. The updrafts were quite 'violent' at times, rapidly boiling up into the atmosphere, and producing a very crisp cumuli anvil when the anvils were initially forming. Certainly not surprising given the 4000 or so + CAPE. You could see them rising in the atmosphere!! While I was travelling east of Old Cleveland Rd (skillfully dodging the peak-shoulder-hour traffic), I noticed a fairly spectacular "clear air" CG strike a tower about 10km in front of me (thunder was about 30 seconds after the CG), the CG came from the top of the anvil, about 10-15km from the base of the storm!!! I immediately pulled over onto the side of the road to grab a photo, and some video footage - and while you can't hear the thunder, you can hear me saying "THERE'S THE THUNDER!!" I continued east, to near Cleveland Pt, before I ran out of roads east (unless I hired a boat!) Where I surprisingly heard nearly continuous thunder for several minutes, before it started to weaken and produce more infrequent thunder. After that, I left back for home. Only a small chase, but fun - and hopefully just a taste of what is to come! I think Ben has gone chasing near the Sunshine Coast, will be interesting to see what he reports back with! -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 043 Date: Fri, 21 Jan 2000 18:46:12 +1000 From: Anthony Cornelius [cyclone at flatrate.net.au] X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.6 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: Awesome storm near Maroochydore Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Jonty, Jonty Hall wrote: > > Tomorrow shows little change at the moment - maybe with the trough a bit > closer there may be a little more organisation. I haven't had a > look at any latest model runs, but I believe the wind profile is > supposed to be similar tomorrow. Thoughts? Tomorrow's wind profile is similar tomorrow, but strengthening, I think it gets around to 30kn or so around 300mb, which isn't bad given more high CAPE's which are certainly looking probable again for tomorrow. Better then 20kn's! The shear backs with height too, but I think the worse thing will be that storms will move too slowly. I'm expecting more thunderstorms tomorrow then today, with the cap finally weakening, and as the N-NE flow dominates over the NW flow. Theta-E diagrams are suggesting a similar scenario, with now major inversions present. Sunday's wind profile appears to be reasonably good - backing with height, and the maximum wind is 65kn at 150mb, 52kn at 300mb, 27kn at 500mb - low level is a tad weak, but from my experience, HPS (high precipitation supercells) may be the result of Sunday. Certainly Sunday is looking to be a fairly good day so far! -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 044 Date: Fri, 21 Jan 2000 19:03:41 +1100 From: Ben Quinn [bodie at flatrate.net.au] X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.61 [en] (Win95; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: Awesome storm near Maroochydore Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi, everyone.. There were some awesome storms on the Sunshine coast today - i actually ended up taking a drive up the coast with my sister, and managed to get a few snaps here and there.. i will be uploading the pics and a report later on this evening.. The tropopause was around 15.7km on the 00z Brisbane sounding - i saw a storm on the Sunshine Coast before i left Redcliffe with a MASSIVE overshoot - i estimated cloudtops would have been around 17km (maybe more).. there was also another nice overshoot on a storm around the Brisbane area (off the coast possibly) as we drove back from the coast, which lasted for about 10 mins - i have pictures of it too..
