Have zoomed in on and animated the activity around Brisbane and Perth - very interesting.. In relation to the jet stream cloud, I agree with you it does look a lot like a front moving up the NSW coast. Following the animation sequence as the band moves up the coast and then out into the Tasman it eventually seems to interact with a much more favourable surface and mid-level environment kicking up a very nice and large looking cell by 2225UTC about 400-500km east of Coffs Harbour. A very interesting process to watch. Patrick The cloud band you talk about was visible on the sat' pic. Compared to the Oklahoma tornado program, this one was pretty light on. Many contrived images (ie the waterspout where disturbed water was shown but no image of actual funnel; coral reef shots seemingly taken during the hurricane -who in their right mind would be out diving - let alone with film equipment during a hurricane??) which at least they admitted to at the end. I know that on prime time TV you will never get any level of technical commentary that would satisfy many on this list. I do have higher expectations of at least seeing some nice footage given that TV stations have access to reasonable $$$. Mind you the Oklahoma tornado program has set a very high standard which realistically is unlikely to be often repeated. Certainly this was very active, and this doesn't include the other storms to its north! The tracker only picks up CG's...interestingly, most of the strikes in this area (sunshine coast & wide bay & burnett districts), are often quite high. But the area is very hilly/mountainous - so this may have something to do with the high freqeuncy of CG's. Our next QLD ASWA meeting will be held at 10am, Saturday the 5th of February. We did not have a January meeting as many people were away on holidays. Our last official meeting was November of 1999 (with a Christmas BBQ taking place in December). It would be great if you would be able to attend this meeting. We have organised a guest speaker, Jeff Callaghan head of severe weather at the Bureau of Meteorology has agreed to give a talk on: - Tropical Cyclones; - Forecasting Tropical Cyclones; - Periods of which Tropical Cyclones tend to occur in (eg, MJO's, El Nino etc); - Correlation between El Nino/La Nina vs TC's vs Thunderstorms. We also plan to have an important discussion on the possible implementation of a Queensland ASWA lightning tracker, similar to that displayed on the Energex homepage, but a real-time version. Everyone's input and ideas would greatly be appreciated for this! Anthony Spierings (an ASWA member/ Energex employee), will currently be attending this meeting to assist in the discussion. We have other various items on the agenda, which include possible weather education seminars later on this year, which may again be held in conjunction with the BoM. There is currently plenty of video footage, with the Nov 22, 1999 Condamine F0 tornado on tape, and many hours of further footage (not all of this will be shown of course!) Any other footage that is taken in the next two weeks before the meeting may also been shown. The address is: Unit 9/14 Argon St. Sumner Please bring $2 for a light lunch after the meeting. I look forward to seeing you there, please inform me if you are able to attend. In relation to SE Aust, it has the active part of the current trough over WA slipping southeast and brushing past Adelaide and Melbourne before intensifying and giving some very heavy rain across parts of NSW before focusing rain on the central and south NSW coast (and E Gippsland). Possibly setting up for a deep low just of the SE corner late in the weekend (I notice MRF going for a very deep SE coast low and cold outbreak on the following Monday 31 Jan - but that is out in fantasy land at 8 days out). Will be interesting to watch. Paul in Darwin has indicated how he is being teased by a low brushing across the top end. The other interesting aspect of the last couple of runs has been the tropical low it has moving SE from the central Indian Ocean. It first appears at 84 hrs, at 144hrs it has kept it moving SE and presumably will be entering latitudes where the steering winds are likely to keep it moving SE. Would be an interesting scenario for WA west coast (possibly even Perth) if it maintained its identity and direction. MRF picks up the low as well but kills it off well away from the coast - presumably at least in part a function of colder surface waters). Most of the above is pretty speculative but as things are pretty quiet storm wise in Canberra at the moment, one can only hope... The most intense thunderstorms occur when hot/humid continental air in the lower/middle layers is de-stablilised by a strong jetstream or up-motion in the upper atmosphere. Tasmania gets the jets, but being a relatively small landmass surrounded by a cool ocean means that the lower atmosphere never gets a chance to become hot and humid. Most thunderstorms form near the jet or approaching front but lack the moisture to be as powerful as mainland storms. Storms can form on the NE ranges in a slow moving trough after a few days of N winds from the mainland, but they will rarely be as strong or as frequent as similar storms that form on the Victorian ranges. Wed/Thu may see a situation resulting in thunderstorms across Tasmania. However, as it often the case, low level cooling due to the maritime influence may result in more rain than thunder. LOL!!! It's a shame we don't have more people chasing storms in the SE Quarter of QLD - the guster shots i took of the first storm yesterday were taken when the storm was weakening, and was yellow on radar at the time i took the shots - i would have loved to have photographed the guster when the storm was pink and red on radar.. but if people have other commitments i guess that's just the way it is.. > > > > Just spoke to someone at Energex, and northern SE QLD and eastern Wide > > Bay Burnett have copped a hiding.. with up to 30 suburbs without power > > at the time i called (would have been higher this afternoon i guess) - > > he couldn't give me an exact number of clients without power like they > > sometimes do, but my guess 50 000 or more? > > Specifics usually get cleared through Public Affairs first. I think it would have been smoke - i went back up the coast today for a swim and to photograph the Glasshouse mountains.. and there was a large area of burnt bush land near Glass House township, and several other smaller grass fires around.. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------
