Ok everyone....

If I get asked where the prongs are once more I'll bl**dy scream (:

Frame 1: scuddy lowering top right, *not* a funnel AFAIK but suspicious IMHO.

Frame 2: Prong on horizon below "11:27:02" - three minutes later this was a funnel 500 metres of the ground at St. Kilda.

Frame 3: Prong on horizon below and just to right of  "-2000" - threee minutes later this was another funnel!

Frame 4: Nice little lowering to the top right.

"They" say 6+9=15 inches of real snow fell over the past 2 days. Using envelope technology (on the way back from my mailbox) I measured ~8 inches (20 cm) last night. Further south there was a prediction for "Thundersnow" yesterday (Thursday). Even further south they might have had rotating storms + a tornado watch. The setup is: Oklahoma sits under a blob (technical term) of cold air courtesy of the Canadian landmass. The Gulf of Mexico is refusing to freeze over and thus set up a strong temperature gradient allowing a developing low to feed of it. The circulation of the aforementioned low steered warm humid air (coutesy GOM, NOT BOM) over the cold blob ... the rest is real weather. The relevance of all this for ASWA: - none -; except a recommendation: extend the Gulf of Carpenteria further south (source of warm moist air and warm moist crocs), and use the soil so obtained to connect Tasmania with Antarctica (source of cold 'blobs'). Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi All. I have started a TC Kirrily (09S) map animation using JTWC information. I would prefer to use BoM information, but I know from the experience of animating TC's Ilsa and John that the wind distribution information in BoM shipping warnings is sometimes inconsistant, wheras JTWC uses a consistant set of wind distribution zones, thus ensuring consistancy in the animation (and saves me a lot of guesswork filling in the missing bits). This in no way detracts from the quality of the BoM shipping warnings, which are adequate for their stated purpose, it would simply be more convenient for me if they adopted a standardised set of wind distribution zones in their format. You can find it on my website at http://www.ace-net.com.au/~carls/KirrilyAnim.htm. Also, I have removed the TC John and TC Ilsa map animations to free up server space, however you can still find them via links to other servers on my website at http://www.ace-net.com.au/~carls/current.htm below the current cyclone warning links. Looking at the rainfall map confirmed my impression that Wednesday's event was an E-W shaped tongue rather than a blanket event across NSW. Canberra is now up to around 70% of our monthly average (where it is likely to stay). Looking at the % rainfall to date for January across the country shows that most of the eastern two-thirds of the country has received well below average rainfall. http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/rainmaps/pmontha.shtml The massive exception is the the southern half of WA. The more of you have the more you do with it. However your car still needs a motor and inigition ( lifting mechanism ) to do anything. Quite often however somebody has the garage door well and truly locked ( CAP ), to get out you need to rev harder ( more Li and CAPE ) and explode out in a voilent way. Bendigo on Boxing Day was rainy all day with Gale Force SW from deep low in Bass Strait. Afternoon max temp was 10 deg C to 3 pm, but I think it cleared and got a few degrees warmer that evening. I was in Lithgow a day or so later and I can recall the local TV news showing snow falling on Mt Canobolas. Victoria had SW wind for the next 2 weeks (NSW had WNW winds which explains the bushfires). Yep! - plus the November 8 Cedar Pocker nader (in QLD) - that would never have been dubbed a Tornado unless Anthony Cornelius and myself surveyed the damaged on behalf of ASWA for the Damage Assessment Program, and concluded that it was a Tornado that caused the damage!! We also have a Brisbane ASWA member that travels north to central and northern QLD quite often (it seems) - i have had 2 emails from him in as many weeks describing HUGE storms - on one day he even reported several wall clouds and protrusions.. i don't think he has a camera though!
