A question on UV readings...

I was under the impression that UV was related to cloud? Well - while I
normally do my own forecasts at home, when I'm at my dad's farm, I rely
on the BoM forecasts via 1196. Anyway - we had a couple of days of rain
(this was just after Christmas I *think*), and all the forecasts were
for a UV-rating of 14 - extreme, during rain. But then when it
decreased to "mostly fine, just the chance of an isolated shower about"
- the UV forecast dropped to "8 - high." This confused me - perhaps I
have misinterpretted the scale? Anyone with information on this?

Hi All,

Just an addendum to all this. The major "burning" influence on Tree Ferns
is actually dry air, not solar radiation. Even on merely warm days, very
low humidity will cause native Tree Ferns of the genus Cyathea and in
particular, Dicksonia, to brown off quite severely. This effect can also
been seen as a result of strong Winter Westerly's with again very low
humidity.

Tree ferns, as per all ferns, have evolved for high humidity environments,
and cannot replenish moisture in the leaves to compensate of the evaporative
loss when low humidities are encountered. Of course, any day on the East
coast with temps in the high 30's usually implies low humidity conditions
with off-shore winds.

Because of this you simply won't find Tree ferns growing in the open in
either Perth or Adelaide, whereas you will find them in full sun positions
in both Sydney & Brisbane. The recent hot dry spell here in Brisbane really
knocked them around also, even in partly shaded locations.

John.
>snip

My native measure of heat intensity is an ancient tree fern
in a sheltered and shaded position in our front yard. The
last time that this fern got burned to the extent that it
did on Saturday was during February in 1998...Prior to that
was the during the bush fires of 1994 and on at least 5
other occasions during its 50-year life. Whether this tree
fern is burned or not depends on two factors 1) The ambient
temperature and 2) the reflected solar radiation intensity.
Each factor on its own has never been enough to burn this
fern in it's 50+ year life, according to the now deceased
original owners of our home. But when both heat and the
reflected solar radiation strike with maximum intensity,
as was Saturday, February 5, 2000, it is very damaging to
this fern. On this occasion, the burning was more severe
than in both 1994 and 1998.

Thanks for that explanation, John. I suppose rather than
the "dryness" of air, it's the rate of evapouration which
is the "killer of tree ferns" since in Sydney, some of our
dryest days, from the RH perspective, are in late winter
when the temperature is about the high teens, but there
is much more evapouration at a higher RH when the
temperature is about the high thirties during a hot
summer's day...Last Saturday was complicated by both
extreme UV and extremely dry air.

I must be extremely confused:-) Just what is the correct
term that decribes the evapourative potential of a given
air mass in given conditions? Relative Humidity (RH)
doesn't seem to be the correct measure on its own. Absolute
Humidity neither...We need a term that combines both the
"radiative evapourative potential" (i.e. the warming of a
surface by both direct and reflected solar radiation that
aids evapouration), the wind velocity or "forced
evapourative potential" (i.e. if air is not moving in
theory, it will gradually increase its RH as water is
evaporated. A continuing source of moving "dry air" aids
a sustained rate of evapouration) and Relative Humidity
which is a function of the ambient air temperature...

Hi all,

Can ya hear that????? We have an Iron Roof and it is pelting so hard you can hardly
hear yourself think....fan.bloody.tastic!!!!!!! Looks like the 'wet' might have
commenced in Cairns!! Obviously - as the local BoM in their informal spot on local
talk-back radio predicted yesterday that 'the influences for creating heavy rain
had dissipated' and we would only get showers ......yeah right!!!!!!!! Unofficially
my mother has an old rain gauge and lives in Whitfield - inner suburb of Cairns -
and has recorded approximately 14 inches in the 48 hours from Saturday 6am to this
morning. Plenty of local flooding - two primary schools closed.- kept my daughter
home from High School as there was so much surface water around - ..was a chance
that the northern highway would close with the high tide this morning but that
seems to have been avoided. Landslides on the Gillies and Kuranda ranges. Gillies
closed, Kuranda open. Huge amounts of rain around Tully. Local radio this morning
indicated that a creek in Tully had broken it's banks and there was water through
the town. Local residents phoning in reported 11 inches overnight in the Tully
area.

All we need now is a little circular disturbance around Cat 3 in the Coral Sea to
complete the picture!!

Indeed, they are awesome. Thanks! I wonder whether the formation
of Decent Dust Devils (DDDs:-) is closely related to tornados from
supercell thunderstorms. My scant knowledge of gliding combined
with the extensive experience of glider pilots from the Bathurst
Soaring Club gives "observed" evidence of rotating thermals in
clear air during both cloudless days and also some way underneath
fair weather cumulus clouds. This rotation appears to combine with
intensive thermal activity from ground level to set an entire
column of air into rotation giving both a structure and appearance
of a DDD very similar, if not identical to a tornado. One question
remains however, that is the direction of rotation which is
difficult to judge from the still photographs. Perhaps John and
Ira have some comments about this.

Indeed it must be wet there!!

Rainfall figures (BOM) for the week are
Cairns - 640 mm
Cairns Ap - 493mm
Tully - 793mm!!!!! that is just amazing!! No wonder its Australias wetest town.
Wonder how Mt Bellenden-Kerr's total is going!

Hi Michael and others,

I won't comment on the relationship between dust devils and supercell
tornadoes (although I think the dynamics are different) However, after a
talk to Tim Crugeon who was on the list during last year suggested he had
information sources suggesting stronger dust devils can reach F2 status.
Now that is very strong. There have been documented evidence of WA and SA
dust devils causing roof damage to houses. Not bad heh.

Very hot in Perth today, the 2:15pm obs just showed Perth City at 40.0C,
this is the first time since the 28th February, 1998, when it got to 41.1
that the city has made it to 40.

It was also the hottest February night in 3 years last night, with the
temperature only getting down to 25.1C.

BOM was only going for 33C today, expecting an early seabreaze, but we've
had E winds all day so far, even right on the coast at Swanbourne its still
blowing an E wind, with the temp there at 39.2C, but seabreaze should be in
on the coast soon.

Also interesting to note, Adelaide also a had a hot day today, its not
often due to the way the weather systems run, that both cities get hot days
on the same day.

Nice line of storms developing extending SE/NW across VIC at the moment,
and up into west NSW with some action down SE NSW south of Canberra as well.

I am starting to wonder about the Williamtown radar. Is there low level
stuff around in the area or is the radar drunk?? It did this yesterday as
well indicating an area of shower activity. Normally I can see signs of it
from where I live here at Schofields. Even the satpics don't really show
clouds consitent with the rainfall indicated - particularly today.

Any comments?

I think its playing up Jimmy... it showed showers out to sea yesterday as
you indicated but there was nothing really out there. I did see some towers
going up to my far SW though about 2 hours ago though.

To answer a few questions, yep im pretty sure John said that the dust
devils rotated mostly clockwise but some went anticlockwise, only a few i
think. There seems to be a few types of them and in the video john shot the
big wide ones definatly have multiple voritcies in them, its quite easy to
see on video. The smaller ones seem to be faster and taller tho. I have a
report up on a dust devil that damaged homes here in perth back in 96. its

Heya's

Just got a call from Andrew Macdonald.. he is on a cell NE of Seymour, he
can see a very nice cloud lowering (he is on the back end of the storm)
which may be a possible wall cloud ! He also said he could see some
rotation in the updraught as well. CG's were frequent whilst talking to him
on the phone, but the lack of roads moving NE may cut his chase short.. see
what happens anyway

I've put a couple of video stills up from this afternoon just to remind you
that Melbourne hasn't forgotten how to host a good-looking storm (or 8) -
real pics are much better & Andrew has pics of a rotating wall cloud at his
end of the line - he took the NW end & I took the SW....anyway, just to keep
your interest, go to

http://www.rubix.net.au/~cadence/8_2_00.htm

Pics, radar etc up by the end of the weekend I hope.

Enjoy,

Jane
