Yet on the other hand, not allow snow/rainbows/sunsets etc. I believe you're missing out on quite a few potential photos - basically, if the sunset is that good, it'll beat the other storm photos anyway. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com In 1984, (I was a teenager on my P-plates) I drove across The Hay Plains in my old HR Holden (Wish I still had it, would make a great chase car) and encountered a decent dust devil. It was a typically hot and dry Feb. day. For some silly reason (probably a mixture of adrenain and testosterone) I decided to power through this devil. Well, I hit it at around 70mph (old speedo) and it almost threw me off the road! I got the fright of my life! Never again. As I mentioned last year, my partner and I experienced one (I guess it was one) out near Wisemans Ferry (St Albans) in around 1990 and it had little, if any, visible dust in it. We pulled over to pat a horse and then soon after another horse started running around, looking distressed, then this devil hit us really hard, I'd guess maybe 40 knot winds or more, although I find such things hard to estimate. Come to think of it, we did see some decent disturbance on a hill top about 500 metres away just before this thing hit us. We got sand blasted (dirt roads) and received small cuts etc and it absolutely covered the car in dust and fine scratches. It was quite frightening at the time as it packed more of a punch than we expected. Great experience though :-) Lindsay P. > I often get worried when I hear people driving through dust devils - > essentially, you're driving through something that has the velocity of a > weak tornado, and occassionally a strong tornado. I guess the usage of 'severe weather' was not in a technical sense, but directed to the lay person; a nice CG is probably the epitome of bad (ie severe:-) weather to that audience. Also on a slightly different note, lets not be naive and think this calendar will only sell to weather people. The quality of some of the pics of I have seen from members of this list and others suggest that it will appeal to a quite wide range of people. Normally if cloud is a possibility, the UV forecast will say something along the lines of 'UV index 14, decreasing to 8 under cloud'. The Bureau itself doesn't issue cloudy-sky values without a clear-sky value (because 15 minutes of exposure during a clear break on an otherwise cloudy day is just as damaging as 15 minutes of exposure on a clear day), but maybe the cloudy-sky value dropped out of the forecast somewhere en route? I'd also be surprised if a clear-sky value as low as 8 was forecast for a Queensland site in summer - perhaps this was issued as the 'under cloud' value?
