These are terrific pics! I especially like the two from Dec. '97 which
show excellent examples of a "visual 'echo' overhang". Yes, that
waterspout was definitely a tornadic waterspout.

Thanks again for all these really great pics!

Hi all,

A night that feels like summer at last :) 4am here, and it's 24.5C, and
the DP is 22C - a pleasant change :-) Those wondering what I'm doing up
at this un-Godly hour can thank my cat and dog, for running around the
house chasing each other! We will lose Summer some time later today
though, with a SE change :-(

I can thank my lack of sleep to the SE change. It's been hammering our place
all night. Just had to log on to see how strong the wind is and am not
surprised to see it averaging 30 kts at Sydney airport. Some of these gusts
must be well above 40kts. It's howling - much like your dog...

Hi all

Just as an aside in this interesting debate, there was an amazing picture
in - it think either the national weather calender or the ABC weather
calender of a few years back - of a DD in outback Qld. The shot was taken
with a telephoto lens straight down a long dusty road, the DD was right on
the road and it was AWESOME! I'd say it was well over 100, possible 150m
wide and looked as dark, opaque and menacing as an F5. Does anyone
remember this shot?

Norah Head had gust to 46 knots at 3.15 am - Wdding Cake in the Harbour
36 knots. What woke me was the variability of the wind - almost clam to
+30 then down to < 5 knots sall within the space of 30 secs.
Went to a 9.30 movie at Warriewood (Nth Beaches) came out to local
flooding.... AWS's indicate Cromer and Mona Vale had > 30 mm in the
hour 9.40 to 10.40 pm last night. A little lightning out to sea as well.

Phil, you may be thinking of the October 1999 photo in the Bureau
calendar last year. It was taken at South Galway station, which is
about 50km SW of Windorah in Qld. Close inspection of the photo
reveals that the whirlwind was passing over a scrub fire, so that
there was dust, smoke, and presumably quite a bit of black burnt
vegetation in it. It certainly looked about as threatening as a devil
can get.

Hi Everyone,

I was at the NSW ASWA Meeting last night and was watching with interest along with everyone else there an area of heavy rain on the radar pass over my place. Since coming home today I have found out that 27mm of rain fell during that time. The highest rainfall rate recorded by my rainguage was 5.4mm/5mins which was from the period 9:15 to 9:20pm.

I have put a graph of yesterdays rain on the web at

Said forecaster told him to expect between 15 and 50 mm. Monday/Tuesday. I can't see it here myself...I'd have said some thunderies Tuesday/Wednesday but only NOGAPS has anything like a rain event happening near here all week. Any thoughts on this forecast and how do they charge that much and (if they in fact get it right) how so? I may be re-opening the old sunspot thing here maybe? Cheers, Kevin from Wycheproof. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 015 X-Sender: jdeguara at pop.ihug.com.au X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.2.2 Date: Sun, 13 Feb 2000 16:23:54 +1100 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Jimmy Deguara [jdeguara at ihug.com.au] Subject: Re: aus-wx: Heavy Rain at Blaxland Last Night Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Matt Lucky you. We watched as the clouds diverted around Schofields but just to tease it produced 2mm of rain. This includes the intermittent rain during the day. Hi Don and everyone,

We had 37.5 mm of rain in our rain gauge this morning.  We heard that North Steyne at Manly Beach was closed by floodwater and that two cars were trapped by the floodwater during the downpour last night.  Pittwater Road at Collaroy and near Long Reef was also affected.

Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Kevin If its Western Australian based, its probably Ausweather - Mal Lamond's weather consultancy. As for accuracy, you would have to contact him - he does analyses of his forecasting methods which are more conventional than the old sun spot theories. I also provide rural assessments - more seasonal than short term although I do provide 5 day outlooks to registered clients and have a few in western Victoria. I like to think the seasonal assessments are ok - if they are not, people will spot paying you pretty soon and one of my clients in western Vic I've had for 15 years Cheers Don White Kevin Phyland wrote: > > Hi every1, > > While talking to an employee of a feed-lot just south of here he mentioned > that they paid big bucks for a private weather forecaster (based in Perth I > believe!) > > Said forecaster told him to expect between 15 and 50 mm.
