Hi Everyone,

Here is some further information for those planning to attend next Wednesdays dinner. I have made a 6pm booking at "Nicks Seafood Restaurant" which is located at Cockle Bay Wharf on the Eastern side of Darling Harbour.

For a map and details of the menu and wine list go to the restaurants website which is at http://www.nicks-seafood.com.au/default.asp

Also I have included a link to a larger scale map of the Darling Harbour area which can be found at http://www.ozemail.com.au/~mjpiper/map.gif

The plan at this stage is for everyone to meet me outside my work which is located where the large red circle is on the previous map at 201 Sussex St. I finish work at 5pm and will be waiting outside the IBM tower where there is a cafe.

If anyone needs to contact me they can call me on my mobile which is 0414 393267

Jane -

I cannot help you as regards the transparentisation in Paint Shop Pro as it bombs my PC out when I attempt it but here's how I pulled out individual images from an animated GIF in Animation Shop -

Start both Animation Shop and Paint Shop Pro. Minimise Paint Shop Pro.

Load up the animated gif into Anmimation Shop.

Scroll to the frame required (the one showing that huge red Vnotch ??)

EDIT - COPY.

Maximise PSP.

EDIT - Paste as new image.

Save as Jpeg or whatever.

Firstly select your desired image, making sure the area you wish to make transparent is free from those little squares that make a transparency look yuk. Zoom in on the area and using the paint brush tool on 1 pixle clean the area. next you need to grab the colour that the area of transparency is made of, to do this goto the tools and select the eye-dropper then RIGHT click on the desired area on your image. This puts the selected colour as the background colour. next goto the menu up the top of the page and select "colors", go down to set palette transparency or in PsP6 press "Shift-Ctrl-V" a little window may come up, just click yes for now, then ok on the next window. Another window comes up and you have three options here, goto the middle option which says something like "Set transparency to the current background color" and click on the radio button. Okay now your image is transparent, but whats that you say, you cannot see the transparent area or it has not changed? Try this, save the image as a GIF then look at the image on your browser, If it doesnt look right go back to PsP and fill in the transparent area in another colour, which is slightly different to the original, this will ensure that some areas of the picture that you don't want transparent don't become transparent. Go back and set the transparency like you did before, don't forget about the eye dropper part. Save the image and look at it again. Repeat if necessary. Okay thats it, this method I have used many times, other people may have different ways of going about it, but it usually ends up the same. okay now to the Animation, this one is easy, load up your animation in the Animator that comes with Psp. Select all the frames by pressing Ctrl-A goto File up the top of the page, then go down to export frames to Paint shop pro, this will transfer all images over to PsP, there you can save them. This may take a while depending on the size of the Animation and the speed of your computer. Okay have fun!!!!! There are quite a few pages on the internet that provide guides on how to do certain things in PSP - my internet browser is playing up at the moment, but if you search for "PSP" or "Paint Shop Pro" or something like that, you should find a few sites with these guides - i looked quite a while ago and downloaded a large course on how to do heaps of nifty things in PSP.. i have since deleted it though.. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com When I first read this post on the train last night, images of WW2 bombers falling out the sky trailing the banner "The arguement about mid-level warming contained herein..." filled my head. Yep, Dr. DJ, you shot 'em down:-) Being grossly guilty of selective editing, I'd like to explore a one particular notion further... [snip Kevin's premise reworded "do we enough upper and mid level data to say that there is no corresponding (albeit perhaps lagged) changes (Ed: warming) in these levels?"] [snip most of Dr. David Jone's excellent post] Dr David Jones wrote heaps on Wed, 16 Feb 2000 16:58:32 +1000: > The two most useful alternatives to radiosondes for > monitoring temperature variability aloft would seem to me > to be glaciological (though strictly glaciers are on the > ground) and satellites. Of course one can resort to alpine > vegetation etc, but this is not as "straight" forward. > Glaciers are extremely valuable in that it is often possible > to reconstruct to very high precision the changes in climate > variables required to cause a given amount of growth or > decay, though obviously you are limited to those regions > where glaciers exist - these are remarkably widespread, > though we are close to loosing sampling in the tropics in > Africa and SE Asia with recent glacier retreats. > > The glaciological evidence overwhelming point to warming > this century, and my understanding is that recent evidence > from SE Asia, the Himalayas, South America and Europe all > point to this warming continuing (something which is > strongly at odds with the view of little recent temperature > change). Touche' DJ...I'm yet to see any scientific paper recently that has changed the melting point of ice...Sometimes the evidence, put bluntly, is so bloody obvious. There are three basic things that affect a glacier's growth or retreat rate; 1) Ice & snow accumulation. 2) Temperature. 3) Friction. See http://www-nsidc.colorado.edu/NASA/SOTC/index.html for more... Now where's about 500mb? In the tropics between 5650m and 5850m or so. It's around those altitudes that glaciers and ice caps in tropical regions form. So without any expensive satellites, it is pragmatic to deduce that if glaciers and ice-caps in tropical and sub-tropical regions are retreating, then a combination of 1) to 3) is responsible. My question is, what do detailed observations show? My answer is that it is almost impossible to point the glacier-melting-finger since there are bugger-all meteorological records for alpine sites in the tropical and subtropical regions. Catch-22:-( But hang-on, remember that recent post about ice-cores in Vostok (Antartica)?. We can directly measure the historical rate of accumulation and the temperature at the time of accumulation by the ratio of oxygen-16 to oxygen-18. This has been done in many regions and we can extend this provided these glaciers and ice-caps continue to exist...If they melt, we've got no proven record left other than that FACT. QED. P.S...and there is always a P.S with me:-) Some glaciers and ice-caps are expanding! However, many fewer are expanding than those retreating:-( Most of the expanding glaciers are expanding because of increased ice accumulation aloft and/or less friction underneath caused largely by increased melting. P.P.S...and there is only a P.P.S. from me accompanying some profound statement. That is...me thinks that those who support the ostrich global warming notion - little or no warming and/or "proven" evidence thereof, march to a largely political and financial drum with the goal to protect existing investments and not advocate or support grossly needed change in current modus operandi..."We'll cope with it when we get there..." mentality. Trouble is, their ultimate demise may ironically contribute to global warming by virtue of efficient cremation!...but not before they are drowned by rising sea levels in their favourite sea-side resort... Earlier this week Blair wrote that Melbourne's record February average maximum is 30.2, and that at the start of the week the current average was 30. After this weeks maximums, all over 30 and many in the mid to high 30's Melbourne's average must be well over record territory. Looking at the long range models it looks almost a certainty that the February average maximum will be smashed. GASP and MRF have Melbourne stuck in a general northerly airflow for the rest of the month, which means we can expect maximums mainly in the 30's. Tomorrow the maximum is only expected to reach 22, but this will be compensated by today's beepen heat. The program includes announcements the current weather situation and forecasts for the week. The main seminar will be on "Nowcasting for +the Sydney 2000 Olympics: the NCAR Autonowcaster", by Dr. Jim Wilson (full details on next page). The Committee will be dining with the Guest Speaker at the nearby "Middle of Nowwhere" restaurant from about 6.00 pm. Members and their guests are welcome to join the Committee at the dinners. Please contact Secretary: Michael Box (02 93854545/fax 93856060) or email: mab at newt.phys.unsw.edu.au if you wish to attend the dinner so that a booking can be made. Some light refreshments will be available following the meeting. (There will be a $2 charge for nonAMOS members.) A field demonstration project sanctioned by the World Weather Research Program has brought together stateoftheart nowcasting systems form around the world to forecast weather events for the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney. These nowcasting systems will be tested sidebyside for a three month period which includes the period of the Olympics. These systems are the NIMROD and GANDOLF systems from the United Kingdom, the Warning Decision Support System from the US, the Radar Processing and Decision System from Canada, and the Autonoweaster from the US. The seminar will focus on the Autonowcaster, which is an expert system developed at NCAR for the 02 hour forecasting of convective storms and precipitation rate. The system is able to forecast storm initiation and dissipation in addition to simple extrapolation of existing storms. Forecasts are made for a 300km by 300k domain with a I km grid spacing. The Autonowcaster integrates data from Doppler radar, satellite, radiosondes, profilers, surface stations, lightning networks and numerical weather prediction models. In addition very high resolution boundary layer winds are also obtained from a numerical model and its adjoint. Forecast parameters are derived from these data sets using research results from numerous field programs and numerical modelling simulations. Utilizing fuzzy logic concepts the forecast parameters are converted to values representing likelihood of precipitation and then combined for the final forecast. The Autonowcaster is now running in real time in the US at the National Weather Service Forecast Office and at two Army test sites, as well as the Bureau of Meteorology in Sydney. During the seminar the Autonoweaster forecast logic will be described, simple forecasts presented, and plans will be given for use during the Sydney 2000 Demonstration Project. Enquiries to: Dr Milton Speer, Bureau of Meteorology, Sydney, BH: (02) 9296 1618 email: m.speer at bom.gov.au The Guest Speaker for the' night will be Dr Jim Wilson, Senior Scientist, National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado. Dr. Wilson has 38 years experience with weather radar for research and operational applications. He is internationally known for his early research into the use of radar to estimate precipitation. Since joining NCAR his research has been directed towards the use of c Doppler radar to investigate mesoscale phenomena and into its use for operational forecasting.
