What a horrible set of data the models have thrown us today. Lift index well
into the positive, on the NSW Northern Tablelands they are pushing double
plus figures.

We appear to have another on of these troughs that slinks back to SA when
the high pressure builds into the Tasman, rather than moving east ahead of
the high, this has happened a few times over this year and is one of the
reasons why we have such a poor storm season.

Oh well, perhaps later this week.

Hi Everyone,
Just recording very intense lightning activity in NE SA/W NSW - several
strikes every second - the tracker's going beserk!

Hi Everyone,
The lightning tracker is still going beserk with several
strikes every second in SW QLD! Pitty we don't have someone out there to
give some reports...These are the most intense storms in terms of lightning
in Australia at present.

Excuse me if it's been mentioned before, but there are some excellent
sat loops now available for sectors c (WA) and d (most of Oz and NZ)
at

http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tropic/real-time/shemi/images/images.html

The colour-enhanced IR movie is fantastic. Takes time to download in
Java (haven't tried FLI) but it's worth the wait. For the individual
image, just click on the frame.

Another new (I think) group of images is at

http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tropic/real-time/mosaic/images/images.html

Go to the bottom for water vapor and IR mosaics (movies and frames)
from S Africa to the mid Pacific, with Oz in the middle.

Nice!

Hi all,

Just talked to Jason Bush from Karratha, him and Keith and Michael
Fewwings are spotting thunderstorms off the coast, and have counted a
total of 7 (yes, seven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) tornadoes/funnels so far!!!!
Two definately touched the water (I believe that waterspouts are
tornadoes, although I think this will certainly raise some eyebrows!
But all funnels/tornadoes were sited under the base of a thunderstorm).
The other five they will need to go through their video footage to
confirm!!!

Jason was saying they were forming just one after another at one
stage!!!!!!! This is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to see the
footage!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Everyone,

I got some film developed on Friday (6 months old!!) and i actually got
my first bolt of lightning on film!!! This picture was taken probably
close to 6 months ago - and it was my first attempt at lightning
photography.. first exposure and everything! This storm was well on its
way out, and there was only 1 more flash of lightning about 10 mins
after this photo was taken, and then nothing.. so i was definitely VERY
lucky to get this:

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/temp/yepyep.jpg

It started off as a crawler at the left hand side of the picture,
crawled across the storm just under the gust front, then looped back on
itself and got half way back to where it started and then dropped a
Cg!!! This was one of the first decent storms of the season too - i was
wrapped when i realised i got it on film..

I did actually get some lightning on film in 1998 - but i was trying to
get a shot of a gust front just on dark, and i was lucky enough to catch
a bit of sheet lightning on film at the same time - it was a terrible
picture though..

I rarely try to photograph lightning - i think i might put in a bit more
effort now though.. could use a few more pictures like this!

Must be the wrong url, I can't see any lightning in that one.

Thanks Laurier,

This is indeed a great site.

One thing that I recommend is to run the animation at different speeds. You
can pick up different dynamics by so doing.

If you run it at top speed (and yes it is hard on the eyes!!), you get a
really good sense of the areas of convergence and divergence as well as
movement of systems generally. You can also see clearly the movement of
winds at different levels in the atmosphere.

In the current pattern you can clearly see the movement NNE of the SA low
and the NON-movement of the Tasman high.

Patrick
