You know I don't archive JCU but NPMOC GMSD instead. I have all the MSL and radar that BoM made available. You need to be more specific about the time span of radar needed. Do you archive MSL 24/7? If so, please keep in mind that my archive is off-line from midday this Friday to midday on Monday. Could you keep all those MSL's so the complete MSL archive is replenished please? We got 1 photo of it, at its best. ! I saw anover very sus lowering on something to the north as well, it had proper funnel cloud written all over it, a lowering extending about 2/5 the way to the ground, but i was doing 110km on a freeway and didnt get a change to pull over #! at %! at #. At about 10am this morning there was a line of congestus on the mountains, hopefully hinting to a good day. After taking an eternity to change it finally took off at around 11pm and some very nice CB's had started forming way south along this line. Meeting up with Matt Smith at UWS Campus we had a look around, puzzled by what we saw. It seemed like the initial line of storms were dying, and fresh development was hindered by a warm layer or cap. A nicely based storm over the mountains to our WNW looked promising, so with nothing to do we chased that. After a phone call to James, who informed us that storm was pink on radar, we sped up beside it coming to Richmond. We observed a fantastic rain-shaft and foot with was falling on the foothills of Bilpin, Kurrajong height and Bowen mountain. This storm had intensified greatly and was propagating south along a line which formed into a nice RFB.After backtracking to find Matt's mobile, we headed back to uni where we saw some 'nice' congestus to our east, over the Sydney metro region. By the time we had arrived back at Penrith, this congestus had formed into a beautiful line of storms. The updrafts were as strong, clean and crisp as i have seen all summer. Some middle level cloud formed along these storms and i believe that these storms were probably the same storms that continued along to Newcastle where they went pink and red. There was another line of storms along the horizon which appeared to be the cold front. This looked very exciting. At about 3:45pm the middle level cloud disappeared from the Sydney basin and more congestus formed. About 2 separate towers went up. They went from nothing to CB's in 10 minutes, one east of Penrith and one South East. The south east storm was probably one of the most impressive isolated storms i have seen in my life. The structure of this storm was amazing, considering it was under 10 minutes old, and the cloud tops were among the highest here for the day. The cell also had a 'collar' cloud, like i have seen in US chaser supercell photos. Although this storm had a relatively short life, it was absolutely spectacular. I have pics of this all, and i will post them when i get them done and scanned. All in all a very photogenic day.Daniel Weatherhead020 Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000 04:55:16 -0500 (EST) From: "Max King" [mnk at Dingoblue.net.au] To: [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: aus-wx: Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000 20:46:01 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2314.1300 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Even here in the 'gong I observed that strange stabilisation after the first line of storms. Here the storms, well.... thunder shower would be a better term passed at 1pm, by 2pm there was this strange flat layer of strato-cumulus covering most of the sky, yet within an hour a fresh cell had popped up again. The front hit here at 2.15pm, an hour later than I predicted.Waking up this morning, i was pleased to see that the cloud cover that had caused a very sticky evening, had passed and there was blue skies. His description - they appeared after severe thunderstorms, where fairly narrow (100m wide or so) and snapped trees clean off. I'm starting to think that inland Queensland gets quite a lot of tornadoes, but they all go unreported due to the lack of population. I've heard that SE QLD is supposed to be a storm hotspot, but how much has that got to do with the population density???? Raced back to the hotel and took up residence on the water front with camera in hand. There seemed to be only one storm in with the front and it looked to be somewhere far south probably on the coast. Took a few nice piccies, before the front passed overhead and became fairly non-spectacular. Heavy rain followed for about 3-4 minutes only, no lightning. Today I got a chance to catch up with the front, busy watching small towers (v.small) all the way back up the Hume. Just got back to Wollongong about an hour too late. But noticed the storms developing to Sydneys south west and south as we approached Goulburn. I'll try to get these pictures up very soon. The scene looking across the bay was quite spectacular, particularly for us storm-starved W'gong guys, just ask Michael T!!
