One does of course expect it to be fairly boring at this time of year, however it is currently so monotonous that it is actually becoming quite remarkable... In fact, over the past 8 days ( at Mt. Crosby), the total Range in daily minimum temps has been just 1.0C, in fact until last night it was just 0.5C (i.e, 19.0 to 19.5). Last night was a shocker, down to 18.5c! Max's have been in a range of 2.0C (28.5C to 30.5C). I happen to take readings around midnight, and the external temp has been in range of 2.5C (20.5C to 23.0C), internal temp range 2.0C (23.0C to 25.0C), RH Range 7% (64% to 71%), and the Bar range 5hPa. More remarkable perhaps, on two separate occasions (Mar 14 and Mar 18) each of the 3 readings; Min, Max and external temp, have each been exactly 0.5C higher than the day before. Rainfall has been basically zero, except for a gratuitous 0.2mm early this morning. In fact total rainfall for March so far is just 15.5mm or around 17% of average (for first 19 days in March) thus continuing the rather dry spell at this location so far this century (currently running at 32% of average YTD and falling). Hum, by now you must totally bored with this boring email about boring weather. But, what the hell else is there to write about? Maybe I'll become an accountant or something. A friend at tennis said traffic pulled over as the roads were awash with flash flooding. My partner works at the conservatorium and the rain dumped down there. Lindsay P. Thanks > Don W I don't have any records of overnight mins for Canberra. The 24-hour min was 20 rounded (probably the 0900 reset temperature of 20.2 from the previous morning). This is a record for so late in autumn and would, if it was 20.0 or higher, be only the fourth 20+ minimum in March in Canberra. The other three were all in the early part of March 1983, including 26.0 on the 8th (the highest 24-hour minimum on record for any month - the 26 from November 1946 is an overnight minimum but not a valid 24-hour minimum on either of the definitions in use at the time) and 20.7 on the 5th. It was also the warmest night of the (extended) summer. The date records for Sydney for the 17th and 18th were 21.9 and 21.4 repsectively, so the 18th has definitely been broken and the 17th may have been (both are pretty soft records, though, compared with other dates around). Not for the first time this summer, Melbourne missed out on a potentially spectacular overnight minimum because of a change around 0800 on Saturday morning. I've only seen the three-hourly readings, (I had the good fortune not to be in Melbourne on Friday night, although Wodonga wasn't much better) - from these it looks as if it only dropped to 28-29 before the change. For Victoria at least, this system might just have been summer's final fling. Melbourne might see low 30s on Wednesday, but otherwise it looks like quite a cool week, and we're at a stage of the year now when the probability of 30+ or 35+ temperatures drops steeply with every passing week. It's certainly nice to see sub-560 thicknesses on a regular basis again! Herberton (899m) has a record minimum of -5.0 and goes below 0 at least once in most years. Even low-level sites more than a few kilometres away from the tropical coast can get cold under the right conditions (Townsville Airport has had 0.1). Cairns' lowest maximum on record is 18.7, so I'd expect the lowest maxima at Bellenden Ker to be somewhere in the 7-10 range - too warm for snow. I also notice that 'Elle' is still listed. (There was a rumour doing the rounds that 'Elle' was pulled off the list because of pressure from the WA tourism people - who were doing a series of ads featuring a certain well-known model - but my understanding is that the real story was that someone at the Bureau realised the conflict in time and substituted another name of their own accord). The Canberra value is particularly impressive because there is no significant urbanisation signal there (the airport is well outside the city boundaries). At 1:50pm, Matt Smith is at Singleton in the Hunter Valley heading for Maitland where a persistent cell on radar is currently situated, moving slowly ENE. He reports another cell developing overhead at Singleton, and more going up through the Wollemi National Park, north of the main rainband.

I think updates would still be appreciated due to the reasonably low visibility out there, his mobile no is 0407069693.

Not sure about the guys out west, they may be encountering problems with the rain, so will hopefully head into the Hunter. Satpics seem to be down at the moment :(

So many calls the battery ran out in the end. I was wondering what the hell was going on. Then I heard of the misinterpreted message. What I meant was that we could have a record on the list of the lack of visibility associated with the moisture haze and to see if the low cloud was able to be picked up by the satpic.. Oh well thanks all the same. The storm chase? Not the best storm chase as we took the wrong option. We were planning to go to Mudgee or the Putty Road to the Hunter and then head towards the target area. The first option would have been better. Unfortunately in between these two routes is only no-mans land. Another problem was that the GMS latest satpic was down and so it was more difficult to pic out where any of the clearer areas were for isolated storm development. Well one positive note is that we had a storm develop to the NW which had very strong updraughts. The back end of the updraughts were very thick and curled around due to back shear. Quite nice actually. On the way to Denman where we saw this cell, we saw a major powerful updraught taking off in the National Park E of Mudgee and shoot through old anvils. This was a characteristic of the storms today with such high CAPE. And the haze was very think reducing visibility and making photo shots of storms without a polarizing lens difficult. A great drive and a reasonable chase but perhaps more of an experiment to see what it was like with such high CAPE within a few hours from home. All the models go for anywhere between moderate and flood falls on the Hunter/Mid North Coast through to Thursday. MesoLAPS, interestingly, makes quite a feature of developing the inland trough, and gives substantial falls across the NW Tablelands, slopes and plains in the next 36 hours -- maybe the chasers should head in that direction! This has allowed me to set-up regular downloads of weather data, for instance satellite pictures As a result I have decided to put together a sat pic archive page. Once the site is completed I will have archived sections of the days sat pics, including an animation sequence. At present I have set-up a image viewer where you can select the separate sat pics for the day (about 60k). As well I have a 24 hour animation of the days sat pics. Warning the animations are about 5MB in size, I have provided a zipped version on the site which can be downloaded with resuming software (getright, gozilla etc). The Daily animations will be updated roughly at 7pm each night and if a major weather event is happening and I have the time, more regular updates will be included. I also hope to in future, if time allows, set-up up a memorable events section where the sat pics for say a flooding event or cyclone will be stored. The sat pics are based on the NPMOC gms-5 IR and are of high quality. Hope you enjoy this site. Hi Group,

Mal Ninnes and I spent the day doing a large circle around Wollemi national park, with reasonable Success.After leaving the heavy rain behind us at Lithgow, we picked up a nice Cell at Mudgee, and a beautiful storm at Ulan. We then proceeded East towards Cassilis, Merriwa and Denman. Encountered heavy rain at Denman, then from there via the Golden Highway to Singleton in Torrential rain, with a lot of Surface water. Departed Singleton at 8pm and experienced more very heavy rain intemittenly all the way back to Sydney via the F3. A good day overall.
