This has allowed me to set-up regular downloads of weather data, for instance satellite pictures As a result I have decided to put together a sat pic archive page. Once the site is completed I will have archived sections of the days sat pics, including an animation sequence. At present I have set-up a image viewer where you can select the separate sat pics for the day (about 60k). As well I have a 24 hour animation of the days sat pics. Warning the animations are about 5MB in size, I have provided a zipped version on the site which can be downloaded with resuming software (getright, gozilla etc). The Daily animations will be updated roughly at 7pm each night and if a major weather event is happening and I have the time, more regular updates will be included. I also hope to in future, if time allows, set-up up a memorable events section where the sat pics for say a flooding event or cyclone will be stored. The sat pics are based on the NPMOC gms-5 IR and are of high quality. Hope you enjoy this site. Test Version can be viewed at url http://members.xoom.com/nsykes/ Nick Sykes +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 003 From: wbc at ozemail.com.au (Laurier Williams) To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: Rain in Blackheath Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 00:14:43 GMT X-Mailer: Forte Agent 1.5/32.452 X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by europe.std.com id TAA14013 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com On Tue, 21 Mar 2000 01:27:12 -0800, Lindsaywrote: >Tuesday 9am > >55mm for the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday. > > >Some pretty heavy rain here > >Laurier, what did you get, being closer to the escarpment? > 60.8, Lindsay, and a further 6.8 in the gauge to 11am. Mt Boyce had 47.4 and Katoomba 64. In the Sydney area Parramatta got 57, Prospect 55, Homebush 53 and the rest were mostly in the 40s. Heaviest falls were in the lower Hunter -- Williamtown 71 (28mm 6 to 9am), Narara 61 (11), Tocal near Paterson 58, Mangrove Mtn 54 (7), Nobbys 52 (11). The inland isn't missing out -- Lake Cargelligo got an isolated 45mm, 24h to 9, and a lot of falls around the inch mark in the central west. And in the period 6 to 9am there were widespread heavy falls -- those already mentioned in the Hunter, plus Bourke 12, Norah Head 15, Parkes AP 17, Bankstown 23, Homebush 27, Canterbury 19, Sydney AP 18, Obs Hill 17, Holsworthy 21, Bellambi 12, Ulladulla 6. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Since changing work locations, I managed to get the ASWA archive of selected radar, NPMOC gmsc, gmsd and gmsfull satpics plus BoM MSLA charts working again effective from 200003200430 UTC (200003201530 AEST). It would have been earlier had it not been for a router configuration error. Could those who have offered to save me BoM MSLA charts please contact me with upload details. Thanks in advance. As for Sydney radar obs, I knocked up an animation of the last 12 hours or so. There seems to be the hint of a developing low inland centred about the Wollemi NP area west of Williamtown. The cyclonic pattern of circulation seemed evident from about 1800 UTC (0500 AEST). Latest BoM MSLA seems to support a decent trough forming about that area. Perhaps this will further intensify to an ECL after this current "low" in the Wollemi NP moves off-shore. I refuse to look at "models" though AVN seemed to have got the prediction close according to Laurier yesterday:-) Cheers, Michael Scollay mailto:michael.scollay at telstra.com.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 005 Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2000 18:06:11 -0800 (PST) From: Andrew Boskell [a_boskell at yahoo.com] Subject: Re: aus-wx: Tasmanian Storm Warning To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com G'day Ian, It looks like the Thunderstorm activity early Saturday morning was restricted to the "central" North. Liawenee recorded -5 (rounded), a possible state record for March (currently -5.1), and there were several other sub-zero readings, including a -3 at Tunnack, which if I recall correctly isn't all that high. Also the coolest night in most of Victoria for a couple of months, with 4s at several low-level sites (Coldstream, Casterton, Mortlake, Latrobe Valley), although only 13 at Melbourne itself. Normally this wouldn't be grounds for much excitement (indeed 13 at Melbourne is barely below average), but after the last few weeks it's a welcome change. With the dry air and fresh northerlies forecast tomorrow, near-extreme fire dangers are expected in parts of Victoria tomorrow, although I'd be surprised if temperatures got much beyond 30. Melbourne has only had 3.6mm for the month (still just below the 1934 monthly record of 3.7) and most of the area west of Melbourne has had less than 10. Ben Tichborne wrote on Tue, 21 Mar 2000 20:54:35 +1200 > How high would a mountain in that area (North Queensland) > have to be to get snow?. I think Blair has something posted about this earlier. I'd say that snow has on rare occasions fallen in the highest parts of N.QLD, probably overnight...To get snow more regularly, just take about 6C away for each 1000m increase in height until you hit a mean low of 0C. That's about it, which according to the above data would be 1170m or so above BK. Further, for each 20 year period into the future, increase that altitude by a further 150m...That's the global warming allowance:-) Then if you want snow on the ground, then shoot for an altitude where the mean max is less than 3C during the snowy times with the min is less than 0C. If you take a look a Thredbo village, snow is usually on the ground there during July when the mean max is 4.9C but there are days in July where there is no snow cover at all. Back to Cairns, July is 25.6 max and 16.3 min. Take that down by 6C/1000m to 3C gives about 3770m. This gives a mean July min of around -6.3C that compares favourably to one of Australia's snowiest places, Charlottes Pass, at -6.9C mean min for July, which is admittedly in a "frost hollow". Has anyone had any experience taking lightning photos with a digital camera? If so any tips. What features should I look for in a digital camera to take these photos The camera must be fired at the same time as the lightning strike. AFAIK long exposures are quite difficult, some of them shoot a series of frames when you hit the button but this'll eat your flash (no pun intended) memory. The way I'm going to do it is by using my DX-10 in video mode and capture an MPEG movie at one frame every 1/4 second or so and hope (: When on the road I'm going to trust to luck and hit the fire button at the time I see the lightning and once again hope that it's a long duration flash... or possibly use my laptop to capture the images in the same way as above. That's if any lightning comes this way...... Hi all.Has anyone had any experience taking lightning photos with a digital camera? If so any tips.
