Hi all,

As some of you know, I was interviewed (as a storm chaser) by a Channel
9 crew last week. This was for a documentary on QLD storms/TC's in the
pre 1976 era, the 1976-present era, and the future to come and what we
can expect. They approached James first, who then suggested I should do
it. The entire interview took about 5 and a half hours, by the time
they setup my study with lightning, took lots of different shots of me
doing different things, and then went to Mt Cootha to shoot some 'action
footage.' They brought in a helicopter and got me looking out into the
sky and they taped me looking out into the sky. It got quite
embarrassing actually as people were stopping and pulling off the road
to watch :( The worse part was me having to stand there with my hands
up in the sky, looking up as the helicopter flew over - very
embarrassing! But a good cure for SDS is to have a helicopter fly just
over you, it gets quite windy :-)

Anyway, they're after some video footage of QLD t'storms. James and I
have given them some, but they'd like some more. If anyone has any
video footage, then please contact me and I'll contact Elizabeth, or
contact Elizabeth Egan on the following details:

The documentary will be on air soon, the tentative date is Sunday, April
16, 6:30-7:30pm - but that might change.

Queenslanders Please Note: The death penalty shall be passed on to
ANYONE who is involved in sending a copy of the segment I'm in past the

Excellent, sounds great Anthony!

However, I'll be coming up to QLD from April 3rd-9th, and you said the death
penalty would apply to anyone 'sending' the segment over the border...you
neglected to specify that it would apply if someone came up to collect a
copy and then returned to NSW with it :)

Yo guys,

Radar shows what appears to be a nice little trough line just off the coast.
Definitely drifting west, lots of nice congestus to the east and a few
towers going up. Something might actually happen today.

John.

Thursday 12pm

27.5 mm to 9am this morning.

None since.

Some of the heaviest rain I have seen fell in Blackheath for a short
period between 5:30pm and 6pm last night. I didn't record the per hour
fall but boy was it heavy.

Did anyone else here the interview on 2BL on Wednesday arvo?

Richard Glover interviewed Dr David Wheaton from the CSIRO and Dr Brian
O'Brien, former prof. of Space Science at Rice (sp?) University in
Houston and now a strategic and environmental consultant living in Perth
(Well, he was on the phone from there anyway)

Wheaton said the usual CSIRO stuff about 40-90% less snow cover by 2070
in the Australian Alps, a 1 to 3.5 degree warming by 2070 etc.

O'Brien said that the models weren't good enough, yet, to work out a net
balance of global warming for the future. He said that the IPCC
(Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change?) lists 42 possible scenarios
for future Co2 levels varying from less Co2 to 3 to 4 times more! He
also challenged the changing views (since their '88 model predictions of
20 to 140cm) of the CSIRO'S sea level predictions which are now at the
plus 5 to 30cm rate for the future.

Whilst not denying there has obviously been a warming of around 0.7 of a
degree over recent decades he also said that there had been at least 20
events in the last 200,000 years where the warming was at least ten
times as fast as current warming. "Nature is not static but dynamic" was
something he emphasised when relying on models etc.

He also said we are coming out of a cooler period (The Little Ice Age)
and that our temps were quite similar to that of Europe pre The Little
Ice Age.

Anyway, just a little excerpt from the interview, I taped it.

I've sometimes wondered myself if the Little Ice Age was influenced by
the apparent volcanic activity preceding it. Also re the current
warming, what about the urban heat island effect as urbanisation
increases and the lack of marine observing stations too? Don't they have
some effect on the accuracy of global warming observations? I've read
that if you take such things into account, warming since the 1970's is
around 0.3 to 0.6 which is comparable to the warming that took place
from 1900 to 1940 (+0.5 apparently) before a slight cooling commenced
again until the early 70's.

Any thoughts folks?

Lindsay Pearce

A thick line of towers are going up from my east all along to the SW. The thickest part is to the SE where there is yellow on radar near waterfall. Very humid and warm outside, and the congestus has a red/orange tinge and subsequently has a very mean look to it, much like it did March 23rd 1997 (almost 3 years!!) where some great storms moved across sydney.
Hopefully more to follow!

Lindsay wrote lots of good stuff snipped on
Thu, 23 Mar 2000 03:41:44 -0800:

Maybe everyone should stop arguing about whether global
warming is human-induced or not but rather concentrate on
the problems that seem to cause global warming and what
that will produce;

1) CO2 is rising, so what do we do to keep it at a
manageable level? Plant more trees? Stop using fossil
fuels? What? What is a "manageable level"?

2) Sea levels are rising, so what do we do about that?
Move low-lying cities? Build dams around our coastal
cities? Pump sand onto our eroded beaches? Try and cool
our planet instead? Take your pick, glaciers or flooding...

3) Temperature is rising, so what do we do about that?
Build higher mountains for our ski-fields? start up a
few volcanoes for new mountains? Build more power stations
to cool our cities by air-conditioning? Go around with less
clothes on and 50+ SPF blockout?

I could go on and on about this, but one clear point
stands clear...When are we going to stop arguing and
concentrate on action? QED.

Thanks for the post, Lindsay. One day, I wouldn't mind
listening to the tape. Perhaps it can be uploaded onto
the 'net somewhere...

Hey Dan and all,

well at 2pm looking south from Nth Sydney I can vouch that these are some
pretty impressive storms building. Certainly are some of the darkest clouds
I have seen in Sydney for some time. Currently it looks like the wind is
swinging to the South, whether that is due to outflow or if it is the change
passing through Im dont know. And yep you guessed it, who didnt bring their
camera to work. DOH

Might be Peter Whetton? (who is a CSIRO authority on such matters).
Brian O'Brien is a well-known greenhouse sceptic (which is presumably
why he was invited on). If I recall correctly he's a geologist by
background, which means he has a somewhat different perspective in
terms of what has happened in the (long-distant) past.

The sea-level predictions have been scaled back in recent years as
knowledge of sea-ice behaviour has improved.

I also would have thought that looking at the likely consequences of
different CO2 levels was the IPCC's job, and that testing multiple
scenarios doesn't mean all are equally likely. We don't know what the
exact CO2 level will be in 2050 or 2100, not least because we don't
know the level of emissions over that time (what happens, for example,
when oil is no longer the main fuel used in transport, as is likely
to be the case by 2100?), but we do know that the level of CO2 has
increased remarkably steadily over the period of instrumental
observations (there is a small seasonal cycle, but virtually no other
noise in the time series) and that it will continue to increase
steadily unless changes are made to the level and trend of emissions.

(Using modellers' testing of multiple scenarios to imply that they
don't know what they're talking about is a time-honoured tactic of
greenhouse sceptics. Scientists will see straight through this, but
the average person in the street won't, and this is often as much
about public relations as it is about science).

20 events? That surprises me, although I am certainly aware that there
have been events when the transition from full ice-age conditions
to something akin to current conditions (which means a warming in the
order of 6 degrees) has occurred very rapidly (in a matter of
decades, and perhaps faster). Still, just because it's happened before
doesn't seem to me to make it desirable that it happen again if it
can be avoided. (Also worth noting that all of the changes he mentions
are shifts between an Ice Age state and a present-day state - a sudden
(in geological terms) jump into a substantially warm state would take
us into territory unexplored for many tens of thousands of years).

> He also said we are coming out of a cooler period (The Little Ice Age)

> Ice Age.

True - but only partly relevant. I don't think anyone would argue
that the observed warming so far in the order of tenths of a degree
has had catastrophic consequences. What people are worried about is
what happens if there is a further warming of a number of degrees.

These figures are about right. The data used for such studies are
carefully screened for urbanisation (or other inhomogeneities). It's
interesting to note in this context that the strongest warming signal
anywhere in the world over the last 40 years is on and near the
Antarctic Peninsula - not exactly an urbanised region! (We see
something vaguely similar in Australia, with the weakest warming trend
in the south-east and the strongest in the north). There are many
things that can affect a temperature record other than urbanisation;
many raw Australian temperature time series actually show a downward
trend if not adjusted, because of the influence of one or both of
(a) the change from various non-standard shelters to the Stevenson
Screen between about 1890 and 1910 and (b) the number of sites that
have moved from town centre sites to airports or similar during the
course of the record.

The cooling from 1940 to 1970 is quite interesting. It's largely a
Northern Hemisphere phenomenon. I don't actually read anything
deeper into it than noise on the decadal timescale superimposed on
a general warming trend (with the 1920-40 period being somewhat
warmer than the trend would suggest, and the 1940-70 period cooler).
For this reason I'd be wary of extrapolating a trend from, say, 1970
to the present into the future (because it is coming off an abnormally
low base), but would be more comfortable looking at a longer-term
trend. Conversely, a record starting after the late 1970's jump in
global temperature (such as the satellite data much beloved of
greenhouse sceptics, which starts in 1979) is likely to show a far
weaker warming trend than a longer time series will.

The Change passed through Wollongong an hour or two ago now with a bit
of drizzle and some gusty winds which are continuing. I don't expect any
storms will develop until later in the day in the hunter or somewhere
when the change gets there.

Guys,

The wind has swung hard to the SE down here in the Illawarra. The change came through around an hour or so ago and it is quite gusty. It is dry down here, complete cloud coverage and plenty of low stuff. Also, rather cold breeze. Hope you guys get something good up there as we won't get anything in the Illawarra. Do I sound like Michael T yet??

Hi John!

Certainly was a very nice looking sky this morning, with some very hard
CJ towers going up! On the bus, I spotted what appeared to be a small
WC(!!) under a Cb just to my north while going to uni! The Cb had
sprouted a small anvil (sitting at about 20,000), and had a small flank
feeding into it. Certainly quite exciting :)

At 1pm, the sky told me I should go home instead of going to my 3pm
Physics lecture as some more nice little things could happen (fingers
crossed).

I'm sure Ben will have lots of digicam pictures for us all :)

Hi Anthony, everyone..

I got a few pics - but barely anything was close enough for my digi cam
to pick up :( Lots of congestus and some great Tcu around - but far too
much foreplay - after a couple of hours spotting it was fairly obvious
that nothing much was going to happen in Brisbane itself..

There appeared to be quite a lot of shear around today though - with
some Tcu's on a 45 degree angle!

Some congestus around midday:

Well yes the 'day' was vastly different from today, with it being a
'typical' Sydney storm day. It was a warm day with activity from about
10:30am onwards. At 12noon a single isolated cell came off hte mountains and
dropped hail on Penrith and St Marys with no rain. Later some cells from the
south moved thru the Sydney suburbs, and a fantastic cell moved east along
the Great Western Hwy over Emu Plains and Rooty Hill, dumping heavy rains,
and took out power for many suburbs along the highway. This storm glowed red
and orange. The reason why i thought that today was similar wasn't the
setup, but the look of the updrafts. If you have a look at those photos you
will notice a beautiful red hue to the storms fom the setting sun.
Well today there was also a red/orange tinge to the updrafts, most probably
from the polluted air. Not as severe or spectacular, but similar none the
less . So the last storm that i remember that had a had a really red look to
it was this.

A very photogenic storm. I have photos that look similar, but these examples
really to show that ferocity yet beatiful nature of this storm. Fantastic
Shots!!

Got a nice guster this afternoon, and some fairly heavy rain, although i
think i drived with a lot of it so it seemed more that it was.

BTW--Strorms would be the rushed version of storms....just in case!

I must admit I was too busy to see the storms once in action. I had seen
the orangey effect of the cirrostratus in the distance earlier but then was
flat chat all afternoon. Oh well. I think the upper Hunter was the go
today. There seemed to be two nice cells on the satpic this afternoon.

I wouldn't have minded chasing those...

One that allows an open shutter or " B " position, not sure if basic digitals have this.

Hi all.

Has anyone had any experience taking lightning photos with a digital camera? If so any tips. What features should I look for in a digital camera to take these photos. Obviously with a 35mm camera it is a matter of opening the shutter and wait, but how is it done with a digital?

Thanks

Hi everyone,

Chaser video orders have been coming through steadily.

If you missed the message or perhaps misunderstood it, here it is again.

The video footage will be of the whole ASWA End of Year chase November 20th to 3rd December 1999. It contains mainly the first week of the chase which includes tornadic dust whirls and associated supercell, squall line, gust fronts, and microbursts. The profits for this will be donated to ASWA. The cost is not that immense only $15 per tape. So if you would like to order one, please do so as the time is running out. I won't be advertising this again unless something changes.

Please e-mail me on   jdeguara at ihug.com.au  if you wish to place an order.

So far, we have orders from:  Jane Oneill, Andrew Macdonald, Matt Piper, Nathan Howes, Malcom Ninnes, Paul Yole, John Graham and Dane Newman . Not a bad response at all.

Thank you for your time folks

Jimmy Deguara
