List:

Been lurking 4 a while due to lack of action and website construction.

I've just seen the trailer for "Savage Planet", to be broadcast at 2230BST / 2130z in my part of the UK next week. The trailer showed a HUGE IC / CC with the Sydney Harbour Bridge niceley lit up in the foreground. Wow, hope I'm not away...

The programme's about lightning... i'll be recording it and possibly MPEGging it so i can send it off to my state rep.

I'll tell you more next week.

Also, it would sound better from you rather than me if you asked BigPond Advance people to clarify what they mean by a "high volume of data". A figure like "15 gigabytes / month" from Optus (via Nick Sykes) would be an ideal benchmark. Any response >from BigPond Advance users on this issue? The Bigpond Advance Freedom plan ( which is the unlimited download one) has a 400 kbit/s (50kbyte/s) download limit. Optus at home has no speed restrictions. Both have a 128kbit/s (16 kbyte/s) upload speed restriction. So if you plan to run a server, for weather data, images or whatever, 16 kilobytes/sec is the maximum speed that you can send files out. And of course, running servers is against the terms of the acceptable usage policy. To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hey All I have been using Optus cable internet for about a month, and so far I have to say the service is great. Only had one real problem when their DNS server went down and I had to manually configure my IP address, 5 min later all was fine. Re: the download limit I can easily say I have downloaded gigabytes worth of data this month. When online I often listen to streamed CD quality radio stations at 90kb/s while surfing. This will certainly add to my download. As well as this I am saving huge amounts of mp3's, software, game demos, weather data, sat pics and alike. O.K enough crapping on, but I would have to say that I would be approaching 5gig. I have subscribed to the optus newsgroups and chatted with fellow users that have downloaded gigabytes per day and haven't heard a word from Optus. One of the subscribers rang Optus and asked "what is unlimited download" He got the response, "WE would probably start investigating when a user reaches 15gb/month" 15gb, 500mb per day, now thats a lot. For heavy internet use I believe cable is certainly an option to look at. Speed leaves dial-up for dead, it's a permanent connection, no need for a second phone line or phone calls and so far, they seem to be holding true on the no download limit. You can also share the connection on a second computer by simply adding a network card to the other computer and connecting them with a bit of coaxial) (There are now some crazy uses of the Optus service "testing ", the download limit, by downloading unbelievable amounts of data (I think they have to much spare time)) I do not know a lot about the Bigbond Advance services, but do know they have some sort of download cap on the speed. I might look into the download issue a little further by asking around. If anyone needs further info or examples of speed etc, yell out. Nick Sykes P.S Had a problem with my SE Australia Sat Pic site, will be busy the next few nights, so will fix it in a few days. --- Anthony Cornelius wrote: > Hi Michael and all, > > I was actually planning on sending a similar email > this evening MS - but > you beat me too it :-) > > I too have been scanning through the Optus at Home or > BigPuddle-Advance > (apologies to Telstra workers and other Telstra > employees/friends > on this list), and became rather suspect of the > little star above the > "unlimitted downloads" and the "acceptable usage > policy." Les (UK) PS >the microguster is back on the indexpage. Yes, that one was on here in SE Qld last Monday night. Well worth the look if you are into lightning and thunderstorms. Some very good footage. You will probably enjoy it. Last nights one was "The Storm of the Century", about a very severe storm that brewed very quickly in the Gulf of Mexico and travelled up the Eastern US, leaving a path of destruction. Apparently, it was the most severe and largest storm in US history, generating very large storm surges, some 50 tornadoes in Florida, and severe springtime blizards across parts of the US. It was followed by a shorter one about a very severe storm that brewed in the N Atlantic generating the most severe storm surge recorded in parts of England and Holland around 1953. Looks like a good series. If you download 35 GB a month, your doing well That's 1.16 gig a day, 48.61MB an hour, 810.18K a minute or 13.5k/s. Yes I'm bored and needed a break from study Weather related it was a fairly dodgy gloomy day in melbourne, just a few spits of rain. Doesn't look like a lot is going to happen. Stratocumulus chase season is approaching, will fill the tank up ready to roll.
