I just re-read Dr David Jones excellent post from last winter on the anomalous southward placement of high pressure systems and how it has become an almost normal part of Australian weather in the recent decade. (Re-read David's post from last year for a much more detailed explanation, I have it if anyone wants it) Oh well, maybe we will get some lows squeezing in between these blocking highs. And maybe some of those "Football Highs" might sometimes show a more North to South orientation in their elongation (awful poetry) to perhaps feed some more cold air our way? Well, that's my fantasy, and I'm sticking to it for now. Seriously, I am just thinking about ways in which such blocking highs could assist cold fronts under certain conditions? Just trying to keep my hopes up for this year, 'tis all. Thoughts anyone? Mind you though, watching some of the congestus breaking through the lower cap was reminiscant of the TDU. Noticed one cell to the South of Murtoa, but nothing really happened from this except light rain. Most of the activity died out once it hit the mid-level cap. Some rain in Murtoa, but not enough to even measure. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hey Phil, Kathryn here ...... Yesterday was pretty eventfull for us as well. We spent a good 5 hrs at the RAAF base and watched all the towers go up through-out the day. Left the RAAF base at approx 2.30pm and headed for home, we knew there was some action around, and 20 mins after being home we heard our first rumble of thunder. Andrew and I had just all the camera's out of the car, so we picked them all up and put them back in again. Unfortunately for us (and our usual story so it seems) we were lacking in the fuel and money for fuel department, so we only managed to head to our local lookout. Saw some nice CG's and CC's over the hills, city and Salisbury-Elizabeth areas (one of these Andrew and his sister saw hit the ground), and we managed to capture a few on the Video Cam (few and far between). A nice base caught our attention looked a bit rough, and as we were watching it, we noticed it was slowly rotating. We set the cam so it was pointing at it so we have footage of it. The rotation probably lasted around half and hour, then the base just became scraggly again. We managed to get a few more CG's on cam before the batteries died on us. So we headed for home to re-charge the batteries and get some food. We went out again about 6.30pm to the same lookout, and there was only infrequent lightning over the hills (1 every 10-15 mins). So after an hour we came back home to check out the rotation of the base on video. The video image is dark to start off with, till Andrew moved the cam, then if you look at it long enough you can see rotation. or if you don't wish to stare at it FAST FORWARD works well. Maybe we can organising a future meeting at our place, and you can judge for yourself. I hope your pics come out ok, just spewing now we couldn't go any further. Well this weekend saw dear old me (Astrolady) get 1 which now places me on the bottom of the ladder. Weatherhead is still sitting on top with 51.5 points, 2nd place has Disco-wx on 50.5 points, and 3rd is Debp on 49.5 points. I hope at least Deb can make her way to the top and show you guys how it is done :-) I am showing everyone how not to do it. Anyway tips have to be in by 6.00pm EST on April 14th......... So don't forget. GOOD LUCK to everyone, and I really hope someone visits me on the bottom.
