There are a few things that are obvious at this time, at leas to me. 1) Man is adding carbon to the environment (the atmosphere) and those associated gasses are increasing. All things being equal, gradual global warming should be occurring. 2) Many indications seem to suggest that what increases in temperature may be occurring are not occurring where and to the extent that the models indicate should be happening and thus no firm conclusions can be made. In other words, we have a far from perfect understanding concerning carbon sinks and sources as well as the theory of global warming. There are some suggestions that if warming were actually occurring, then increases in associated clouds might offset and limit the degree of warming due to the reflection spaceward of the incident solar radiation. Moreover, the models suggest that with global warming there should be a net increase in atmospheric stability and a decrease in precipitation. That has not been observed. In fact, some will cite increases in precipitation as an indication of global warming. In the mid '70s the word was that the earth was cooling and we were headed toward a "mini ice age". Well, that theory has fallen by the wayside. The current theory could meet the same end. 3) Fossil records indicate that large 'natural' swings in climate have occurred from time to time in the past. Evidence for those large changes suggest man had nothing to do with them. We were not around. Thus, any real changes now might simply be 'natural' in nature, having nothing to do with man. 4) If evolution is true and the theories of "stochastic evolution", "punctuated equilibrium", or the like are accurate, we have nothing to worry about anyway. Our bodies and the entire ecosystem will accommodate these changes by 'automatically' and rapidly acquiring the know-how, the logos, the intelligence, the design of 'new cooling systems'. Thus, with this new spontaneously arising biological information, species will not die off due to increases in global temperature, but simply will accommodate those increases. 5) There is insufficient indication from global measurements that true or actual global warming is, in fact, occurring and therefore that sweeping changes in sociopolitical policies are unwarranted at this time. These, at least, are one man's opinions. Les ************************ Leslie R. Moreover, the models > suggest that with global warming there should be a net increase in > atmospheric stability and a decrease in precipitation. That has not been > observed. [more snip] The more *educated public* debate (NOT yours, Les) on climate (and many many other scientific issues) is often characterised by the following. We hypothesise that an effect (global warming) is occuring, then think of effects that create a negative feedback (increase in clouds - more reflection of solar radiation) or a positive feedback (melting icecaps - less reflection of solar radiation). In fact, we can connect any physical meaningful "nodes" that we like, for example: global warming -> melting icecaps -> lower albedo -> more evaporation -> more clouds -> higher albedo -> bigger ice caps -> global cooling (oops, how did I get here?) The issue of global warming is obviously very complex as it is influenced by interacting nonlinear effects that cannot be captures by simple cause-and-effect chains. Climate models might be our best bet to capture this mess. Unfortunately I left home to chase at 4.30pm, the Prices Hwy was bumper to bumper and the best I get was Gerringong at sunset. Took some nice pics of the storm over Jervis Bay area, some sus' lowerings and beautiful sunset lit towers. Storm has moved out to sea now. We checked radar and were dumbstruck seeing Pink on the broad scale near Ulludulla!, My 1st thought was "ITS MOVING NE!" 2nd thought was "My Mum and Sister are about 10 minutes south of Ulludulla at our caravan on the beach for the long weekend and they left this morning!" We checked for warnings and an STA was out, with "Hail large enough to damage roof tiles and damage cars has been reported just south of Ulludulla" When i read this i kept trying to phone my sisters mobile, but it was either switched off or the phone service was down. I still havent heard from them. Anyway, the 3 of us went to do some obs but just couldnt find a lookout around the lower blue mountains with a good southerly view.. We parted ways and came home. We could see the storms south on the way home. Nice updraughts being sunlite a nice red/pink colour (attempted a few photos whilst driving). Came home, checked the radar, still strong development, I decided to head to the coast to try and get some lightning photos, given the very few chances over the last year or 2 for lightning photography. Made it to Maroubra Beach, which has a great S->SE->E->NE view. The storm was well under way, with lightning every 5 seconds or so. I got out the tripod and attempted lightning photos. Missed a whole heap of CG's either just before i pressed the button, or just after i released it on the camera :( Typical!!! BUT I did manage to get a few great CG's on film, with only 3/4 second exposure time, lighting up the whole storm, great structure as well! I had the video camera and started taping, but DOH no tape!!! I was cursing myself, and it was AFTER the storm i remembered i had a spare stashed in the car :(. Sat on the beach wathing the lightning from a few storms further out to sea for 1.5 hours or so, and came home. A great day off, watching 3 hours or so of Tornado video's, and then being treated to a great lightning show just S/SE of Sydney !!! I hope everyone around here got to see it. As try and contact my mum/sister ASAP to get details (hopefully they got some of the large hail!) A very happy chaser!
