We could really use it. It seems that there has been plenty of rain around (literally) but not here. Currently the weather in SE QLD is classic Quidge. Strong (not quite howling) SE's, close to 100% cloud cover and of course, zero rain. I expect the coasts are getting light drizzle. With the drop in temps and humidity in the first week of April, we are now well underway towards the dry winter regime, so I suspect that significant falls now are unlikely until much later in the year. But here's hoping anyway. John. >snip In terms of La Nina, I think you will find that when you do get rain, it will be a significant amount John. It is a matter of when. NOTICE OF APRIL SCIENTIFIC MEETING The next meeting of the AMOS Sydney Centre will be held on Wednesday 26 April, 2000 Venue: University of New South Wales School of Physics Room 27, Old Main Building Parking is available on campus (for a fee), but free parking on Barker St. is probably the best option The Old Main Building is opposite the Barker St. gate. Time: 7:30 p.m. for a 7:45 p.m. start. The program includes announcements, the current weather situation and forecasts for the week. The main seminar will be on "Applied Coastal Oceanographical and Meteorological Modelling in Australia and Asia", by Dr. Graeme Hubbert (full details on next page). News Items AMOS Council has decided that the 2001 AMOS Conference will be held in Darwin, and the 2002 Conference will be held in Perth (both in conjunction with other planned conferences). Council is researching the issue of accreditation, with the aim of introducing a special membership category for appropriately qualified AMOS members.Sydney AMOS Presentation Applied Coastal Oceanographical and Meteorological Modelling in Australia and Asia Graeme D. Hubbert Global Environmental Modelling Systems gdh at gems-aus.com Room 27, Old Main Building University of New South Wales Wednesday April 26 7:30 pm for a 7:45 pm start GEMS was formed seven years ago after I left the Bureau of Meteorology and in the first part of the presentation I will outline the range of consulting work carried out by GEMS. This will cover oceanographic areas such as coastal flood modelling from tropical cyclone storm surges, ocean current modelling for oil spill and search and rescue, coastal and estuarine modelling for coastal engineering projects. Meteorological areas covered will include mesoscale meteorological modelling for environmental studies and for marine activities such as yachting, with examples from previous America's Cup campaigns. The need to examine the relationship between the research world, in the areas of meteorology and oceanography, and the needs of the "real" world is extremely pertinent at the moment. This relationship is going to be up for public examination this year due to the advent of the Olympics. Never before in the history of these sciences has the world's attention on the ability of Australia to apply its knowledge of meteorology and oceanography to provide usable forecasts been so focused. This is a very important time for Australia to cement its reputation of excellence in these sciences. It is therefore critical that the best expertise from the research and the consulting worlds is drawn together to produce Australia's best effort. This issue will be discussed in more detail. Dinner The Committee will be dining with the Guest Speaker at the "Momma Teresa" Italian Restaurant (412 Anzac Parade, one block south of Barker St.; great pasta for around $10) from about 6.15 p.m. Members and their guests are welcome to join the Committee at the dinner. (Don't worry if you can't make it by 6.15: they can put a pasta in front of you in record time!) Please contact Secretary: Michael Box (02 93854545/fax 93856060) or email: mab at newt.phys.unsw.edu.au if you wish to attend the dinner so that a booking can be made. Some light refreshments will be available following the meeting. (There will be a $2 charge for non-AMOS members: students exempted.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------- Jimmy Deguara from Schofields, Sydney President of Australian Severe Weather Association Inc. Hmm it seems all too good for me! The BOM 4 day outlook has a Low developing tomorrow to the NorthEast - it now depends on the trough and potential contained in it to see if we have a final Tropical Low fling to end our season off. Damm I hope so! Seems that the massive high is aiding in keeping this trough alive - giving it some decent vorticity / shear through very gusty & humid easterlies. Paul in a Wet & Cool Darwin.
