I have a suspicion they weren't just showers. When the rain dropped there
were 2 CGs quite close to the house i am in. It dropped 6mm here
(Cranebrook, North of Penrith) in about 10 minutes and a further 2mm in
showers persisting for about 40 minutes.

I have not had the time to comment until now.

At the time Rune was telling me on ICQ around 4pm ish that he was getting
heavy showers, the clouds appeared more like larger convective cumulus. In
the case of Rune, some were in the process of even glaciating. There was a
weak shallow cumulonimbus with a fairly widespread weak anvil to the N
around the same time.

On the way to the AMOS meeting last night (which was excellent I might
add), there were brief heavy showers with large drops. On the way back
there were heavy showers amongst more widespread shower activity.

See what happens today when this fog clears.

Hi folks,

I can verify the forecast that a few were telling me: "Overnight drizzle"

Well the clouds dumped 13.6mm of drizzle overnight. I think an elephant has
been around my rain gauge.

Thick fog here at the moment (visibility <100m).

hey, hey, hey

It was looking very well gloomy this morning as I rode to work at 6:00am. Very large cumulus off the coast and overhead in the Illawarra, and some alrge rain drops from those clouds that were giving drizzle. As things really seemed to be hotting up for a downpour just after sunrise, the wind swung from an easy SE'er to a hard NE'er and things instantly cleared up. Currently down here it is mostly clear and the NE'er has backed off almost to calm conditions. Verrry disappointing!!

Cheers

Wahoooooo

AT LAST, some beautiful liquid sunshine here at Mt. Crosby. 2.5mm in the
guage to midnight last night and about 8mm since - even puddles on the
ground where just two days ago we had 1cm cracks.

And the forecast looks great!!

Hi Garry,

Despite at least 30 years of intense (and intensifying) research, there is
no current closed theory of tropical cyclogenesis, and it remains a bit of
an educated guessing game at the present time. So consistency of policy
between agencies (e.g. BoM and JTWC) cannot always be expected. Plenty of
necessary conditions for a TC to form have been identified - like low
level cyclonic relative vorticity of the environment, weak vertical wind
shear etc etc - but even these are very subjective and open to
interpretation. At present, this small low that you mention is running
into a more hostile environment as it moves south, with vertical wind
shear rapidly increasing. My thoughts are that it has little chance of
developing. However, the environment is improving further north, and all
the models are indicating development towards the end of the week in the
northern Coral Sea. This is not unusual for the USMRF which often develops
spurious tropical lows (possibly its biggest current problem), but ECMWF,
UKMO, GASP and TLAPS all indicate development as well. At this early
stage, the UK model brings whatever it is (low or TC) over the Qld coast
by about late Saturday/early Sunday. The others go for W or SW movement as
well, but have the development further off the coast and a later approach.
Might not be a good week for camping at Lucinda, but its a pretty tough
call at the moment. I would definitely stay tuned though...

Cheers,

Jonty.

Hi all,

Interesting viewing on the latest SST anomalies for april. Looks as if
that warm body of water sitting on South Africa's east coast has broken
up a little, even if it is drifting east but the warm pool off Perth
seems to have increased somewhat in size.

A bit of a mixed result for winter weather prospects for us southern
folk, maybe.

Like Michael Scollay says though, later in May should give us a better
idea of things.

Jane.....Jane......Jane.....,

Before you kill Ben,... it is all a question of magnitude. It is when
you are quietly slaving in the garden and you suddenly notice something
like this approaching that we Brisbanites tend to get excited...

which 15 minutes later turns into...

So you see where Ben is coming from... Ah well...

us down here (and then being dismissive of things that look to me to be

In our neck of the woods ie: the bottom part of Australia - that sort of

having to leave work, take 2 rolls of film, flatten a video camera
battery or two and then proceed to the doctor's surgery to get a medical

By the look of your mail this has taken a while to be posted. In any
case, the low is certainly in the forecasts now (according to the
Queensland outlook, it's not expected to develop into a TC in the
next 24 hours, but even in its present state has the potential to
produce heavy rain).

Matt,

What a beach that is! We had a van there too, at the northern end of
that beach. Used to get some good storms down there. We stayed there
last summer. Great storm swells in winter too, I'm sure you know the
surf reef virtually outside your van park.

Hi Everyone!

I got my photos back (none of the lightning ones turned out, the storm must
have been too far away :( , they didnt charge me for the photos though
which is good.

Anyway besides that misshap, I got my photos back from April 5, the day
severe storms with large hail were expected to go beserk through NSW. Not
much happened but on the back end of one cell I was on near Camden, a
funnel came out. I didnt want to go beserk about it without having the
proof to show everyone :) Its the main feature on the front page :

http://www.sydneystormchasers.com

Enjoy!

Lindsay : You must be at the caravan park that got evacuated (i believe)
during one of the 1994 bushfires.. I was at our caravan park, and remember
driving up the road seeing burnt tree's on either side of the caravan park,
but the caravan park had been saved. Yes, great swell.. odd shark around as
well so its safer not to go too far out :)

Just a brief note on weather conditions in the Far North -

At my home in Brinsmead Cairns, it has been raining, almost continuously
since Tuesday, with showers having commenced during Easter Sunday. In
excess of 300mm has been recorded at Copperlode Dam up to 9.00 this
morning. A guy rang Talkback Radio from Cooktown, and reported "2 foot
of rain in the last 24 hours". Moderate flooding of the Daintree River
has been reported with more moderate to heavy falls predicted for the
Far North over the next day or two. Obviously the presence of the two
lows in the Coral Sea has been announced to the general public. It
seems that the low just east of Cooktown has only a slim chance of
developing but the local BoM are seriously watching the one out towards
the Solomons.

Incredibly strong winds here also. Gale Warnings are out with gusts to
50knots being recorded off the coast. We are averaging 30 - 40 knots in
the City. Most Tourist operators cancelled trips to the Reef today.
Many locals were quite sure early this morning that a nittle low had
sneaked in????????

Here I was thinking that all the action was over for the year in our
part of the world..and we get a couple more chances at
Cyclones...damm!!!! lol!!!

Best wishes,
Desley in Cairns.

The wet April in many areas of northern Australia has led to the
continuation of the very wet start to 2000. A large area has already
received its mean annual rainfall or more; most of the NT apart from
Arnhem Land, almost all of WA north of a line from Carnarvon to
Esperance, and a few scattered pockets through Queensland and NW NSW.
Much of WA and the south-western NT has topped 150% of annual rainfall,
and there are areas exceeding 200% around Alice Springs, Giles, Wiluna
and from Broome southwards. Alice Springs has now recorded 550mm for
the year (including 271mm so far in April), which is the fifth
highest annual total there (at the airport since 1941, the PO prior
to then). The record is 802mm in 1974, which will take some beating.

The 2000 all-Australian total is running about 80-100mm behind
1974's at the same stage, but the winter of 1974 was reasonably dry,
so a wet winter and spring could see 2000 catch up.

Topaz (north Queensland) has 4200mm for the year so far. Another
interesting set of totals comes from the Kimberley, where Kuri Bay
has had 1831mm and Kalumburu 1762mm. Both would be well within
range of the WA annual record of 2169.4mm, set at Jarrahdale (in
the south) in 1917 - they would each need 30-50% above climatology
for the rest of the year to do it (one decent cyclone in November
or December would do it).

Central Australia has also been very cool in the last week; there
is a vast area which had maxima more than 6 C below normal, with
several recording anomalies in excess of -10 (-10.2 at Alice Springs,
-11.6 at Jervois).

Hi John and all,

Brisbane itself has also been dry, as well as west of Brisbane. It
wasn't until i was having a discussion with James last night that I
really realised how dry it was, even in Brisbane. There's a large
contrast in totals from 2000, and 1999. Here are the four month totals
so far:

    1999 2000

January: 211.3mm 36.9mm
February: 229.2mm 88.2mm
March: 108.5mm 35.2mm
April: 82.1mm 42.0mm (to date)

Total: 631.1mm 202.3mm (to date)

Sure, Jan/Feb were above average in rainfall, and 2000 months have been
below average, so it makes the contrast stand out further, but it really
has been quite dry. Despite the recent 7-10 days of "wet & cloudy
weather," which has basically consisted of light rain and drizzle.
However, in the past 2 days, some large coastal showers (and today, a
couple of storms formed...I heard one rumble of thunder at around
12:30pm at work, and I got caught in another storm with a 40-60 precip
rate, and winds 30-35kn, enough for small branches/twigs to fly across
the road at about 2:45pm). But it's been hit and miss - and the inland
areas really haven't been getting much at all. My parents still haven't
broken the tripple figures yet (100mm), at their property WSW of
Brisbane. Although it was quite wet last year, it's now very dry, and a
lot of the region around the Lockyer Valley is dry, and lots of brown
grass!

While much of QLD has been experiencing very heavy rains..the SE corner
has been left out - which goes hand in hand with our season so far...

US storm chasers being made out as me now!

The massive high near Bass strait should break down and move east over the
weekend. My fears are another will replace next week.

Yes,

Damn Jimmy again. For those who missed the opportunity to go on Monday to
the Mean Fiddler, Rune, his girl friend, myself and possibly others will be
dining there and having a bit of a chat Friday night around 7:30pm to 8pm -
and knowing me - a few laughs if I don't behave myself.

The Mean Fiddler is located on the corner of Windsor and Commercial Road,
Rouse Hill.

This is just to extend the invitation as sometimes people would like to know.

Hi Everyone,

Just noticed an observation from northern QLD in the AWS reports on Laurier
Williams site (http://www.ozemail.com.au/~wbc/pub/$NOTEAWS.TXT) - Rundle
Island recorded a gust of 71 knots mid this afternoon - which converts to
around 130km/h ..... !!!!!!!!! .... the AWS also recorded a 60mm/h +
rainfall rate at the time, and prior to the gust..

Is this ob for real? If so - then that is some serious weather... my guess
is it was recorded under a lumpy storm..
