Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Well it looks like we will have the Coldest night for the year here in Perth tonight after a very wet day, the showers have abruptly pissed of for the night, the SE'ly was in Perth by Nine pm when it was 9.9 C here in Jandakot. Now Currently in Perth :- PERTH METRO 29-04-00 00:25 7.6 6.3 SSE Calm Calm 1019.2 90 JANDAKOT AIRPORT 29-04-00 00:25 4.6 4.1 SSE Calm Calm 1019.5 96 It dropped 3 C in Perth in an hour just before midnight, Bickley was on 7.6 C at 21:00 WST currently 6.3 C there at 00:00 obs time. So it looks like it's goin to be a Bloody Freezing Night here in Perth, maybe even some fog in the morning in a few areas even tho it it's forecast, just abit of local knowledge here from living in previous area's near were i am currently living, well if there is any fog in the morning " Providing I am awake at the time ", it be to cold to get out of Bed lol. It will be interesting to see what the Minimum are in the more colder area's of the state this morning ?, Blair would u like to comment ?. Like Hyden, Brookton, Wandering are just a few of the known cold spots that regularly get low minimum, when the SW of the state has a cold night. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, This Tropical Low has me interested - it looks to move south, and maybe south-east from it's current position NW of New Caledonia. What is so interesting, is that the timing of the surface trough and front, might be enough to help weaken the ever-present Quidge along the coast. This will help assist the low to move southwards. But what really has got my interest, is the warming of the upper atmosphere over us over the past 24-36hrs. No doubt this will continue. But the best aspect about this, means that a summer-type atmosphere may form over us. Meaning that the jetstream over WA/SA and the sub-tropical jet will lie south of us. The low might just move along the ridge/upper level trough boundary, and move towards the coast with the steering flow of the tropical upper level winds. While a tight iso-thermal gradient will be established to our south, probably inducing a very strong jet. While the jet won't be that strong over us, it should be pretty strong to the south! We might have a bit of jet, but it shouldn't do too much damage, if anything it might help enhance some outflow. It will be interesting to see what happens - as even if a low does not hit us, but just stays off the coast - with the new high coming through, it could give us some good gales, and some mod-heavy rain. Adelaide had a minimum of 21.7, the warmest night so late in autumn, and several other SA stations have topped 20. Cape Otway in Victoria had 19, whilst in Tasmania, Strahan had 18 and several stations 17. Hobart has also (at time of writing) equalled a late-season record maximum with 25.7. On the other side of the coin, south-western WA had a cool night with many stations in mid-to-low single figures. No records were broken as far as I know, but Perth Airport's 4 was its lowest in April since 1971. Quite windy in Melbourne as I write - 25-30 knots - but still mostly clear, with the temperature around 25, well above average but still 3-4 degrees short of record territory for this time of year. The short-range models are suggesting quite a bit of rain in SE SA and western Victoria overnight; the South Australian forecast has picked this up, but the Victorians haven't yet. (In the best traditions of the 1996-2000 period, said rainband is forecast to dissolve somewhere in the vicinity of Werribee). Hobart's total for the period from 1/5/99 to now is 310.5 mm; assuming no significant rain between now and 9 tomorrow, this will be less than 50% of the annual mean of 624mm. April itself has had 5.1 mm, not a record but obviously way below normal. It will be Hobart's 13th consecutive month with below-average rainfall. Anybody got any ideas on possible reasons for this? Could it have anything to do with the colder than average SST's further south in the Southern Ocean? Maybe this could eventually help push the highs a little further north. Lindsay P. PS: Wouldn't it be nice if some of these fronts matured and came our way...you've gotta dream.
