NORTHWEST PACIFIC (NWP) - North Pacific Ocean West of Longitude 180

NOTE: The tracking information for Northwest Pacific Basin tropical
cyclones is based primarily upon operational warnings from the
Joint Typhoon Warning Center of the U.S. Air Force and Navy at
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Comparisons were made with track
coordinates given in advisories from the meteorological services
of Japan (JMA) and the Philippines (PAGASA). In general, whenever
the center position differed by more than 40-50 nm from JTWC's, an
entry was made in the Remarks column.

Michael V. Padua, owner of the Typhoon 2000 webpage, sent me the
PAGASA track for Typhoon Haiyan/Maring and the JMA tracks for
all the named cyclones. Huang Chunliang of Fuzhou City, China,
sent me the tracks from the National Meteorological Center of
China (NMCC), the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), and the Central
Weather Bureau of Taiwan (CWBT). A special thanks to Michael
       and Chunliang for their assistance.

The 1-min avg MSW were taken from the JTWC advisories while the
10-min avg MSW and central pressure estimates were obtained from
JMA's advisories. The 10-min MSW estimates from the other centers
follow the main track in a separate table.

Note: The first JTWC warning was at 11/1200 UTC--the data for 0600 UTC
was taken from the JMV File. Also, the 10-min avg MSW for 11/0600 and
1200 UTC was taken from PAGASA's warnings--the JMA track begins at
1800 UTC. There were some significant differences in center position
estimates during the early, formative stages of the cyclone; however,
after Haiyan became well-organized the coordinates were in good agree-
ment. The 10-min avg MSW values from NMCC are tabulated below, as well
as those from HKO, CWBT, and PAGASA during the time Haiyan was traversing
their respective AORs. Also, five center position coordinates from
PAGASA which disagreed rather significantly with JTWC and JMA are given
as well:

Note: JMA was the first agency to classify the pre-Podul system as a
tropical depression and the first three entries in the track above were
taken from JMA's warnings. The coordinates and 1-min avg MSW for
18/1800 UTC came from JTWC's JMV file--their first warning was issued
at 19/0000 UTC. The data for the final entry at 28/0000 UTC came from
JMA's final warning--Podul had become extratropical by that time.
There were some differences in center position estimates during the
early, formative stage of Podul and during the time it was beginning
to transition into an extratropical cyclone; however, during the
typhoon's intense phase the coordinates from JTWC, JMA and NMCC agreed
very closely. The 10-min avg MSW values reported by NMCC are given
in the table below:

Note: The tracking information for this depression was taken from JMA's
High Seas Bulletins. The single position from JTWC annotated at
21/0600 UTC came from a STWO. A TCFA was issued for the system but
was cancelled after it had moved inland. (I have assigned a 10-min avg
MSW of 25 kts by virtue of the depression's being mentioned only in the
summary portion of the bulletins.)

NORTH INDIAN OCEAN (NIO) - Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea

NOTE: The tracking and intensity information for North Indian Ocean
Basin tropical cyclones is based upon operational warnings from
the Joint Typhoon Warning Center of the U.S. Air Force and Navy
at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The MSW are based on a 1-min averaging
period, which is used by all U.S. civilian and military weather
services for tropical cyclone warnings. Some information was
also obtained from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Note: JTWC did not issue any warnings on this system but did issue two
TCFAs. In deference to IMD's warnings, which referred to a "cyclonic
storm" that made landfall, I have kept the MSW at 35 kts. The JTWC
position from the second TCFA at 16/0330 UTC relocates the center back
to the east, farther from the coast; yet the TCFA cancellation issued at
16/1600 UTC indicates that the system was inland moving westward over
India. A bulletin from IMD early on the 17th indicates that the system
had weakened to a depression by 16/2100 UTC.

NORTHWEST AUSTRALIA/SOUTHEAST INDIAN OCEAN (AUW) - Longitude 90E to 135E

NOTE: The tracking coordinates, central pressure, and 10-min avg MSW
estimates presented below were obtained from the tropical cyclone
warning centre at Perth, Western Australia, for positions east
of 90E and from RSMC La Reunion (MFR) for positions west of 90E
in the Southwest Indian Ocean basin. The 1-min avg MSW values
were taken from either JTWC's operational warnings or the JMV
file. Also, the coordinates prior to the first warning from
Perth were obtained from the JMV file. A special thanks to

             !!!!!! IMPORTANT NOTE - PLEASE READ !!!!!!

It has been brought to my attention that I should repeat in the
cyclone tracks file the caveat which is included in the Author's
Note at the end of the cyclone summaries. The tropical cyclone
tracks which I prepare are based upon the operational warnings/
advisories/advices/bulletins from the various tropical cyclone
warning agencies around the world. Users of these tracks should
be aware that they are preliminary and subject to revision during
post-seasonal analyses of the cyclones by the forecasters and
analysts at the several warning centers.

For the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific basins, official tropical
cyclone reports and "best tracks" can be found at the website of
the Tropical Prediction Center/National Hurricane Center:

     http://www.nhc.noaa.gov>

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center's website contains links to their
Annual Tropical Cyclone Reports (ATCR) which include that agency's
"best tracks" for tropical cyclones in the Northwest Pacific basin,
the North Indian Ocean, and the Southern Hemisphere:

     http://199.10.200.33/jtwc.html>

For the actual Best Tracks files, click on the link for Best Tracks
(in the menu on the left side of the screen) and follow instructions.

In the ATCR for 2000, the Chapter 5 tab contains verification
statistics of JTWC warnings for all the 2000 tropical cyclones in the
Northwest Pacific, North Indian Ocean, and the Southern Hemisphere.
There are gaps in the Best Tracks presented here for certain cyclones
during periods in which no warnings were being issued.
