Hello everyone

A new weather channel will be launched on Pay TV early next year. For those
of you who already have seen the Foxtel or Optus channels, this channel will
be a significant step forward. While it won't be aimed at the hard core
weather enthusiast it will contain greater depth and more interpretive
information than is currently available on TV in Australia. The channel will
feature a live presentation on the hour hosted by a meteorologist and
focussing on GMS and radar hotspots around the country.

We would like to obtain some exciting weather photos to be made into some
introduction slides on the channel. Radical shots of storms, floods, fire or
wind would be prefect. If any of you have any photos which you would be
happy to donate, then please drop me a line.

If you are interested to learn more about this new channel, then I can
certainly fill you in on that as well. We are also interested in canvassing
ideas for the channel, so feel free to contribute in any way you like.

Many thanks
Mark Hardy

Howdy all. What a great meeting last night. It was soooooo good to talk to
people who share the same passion as you! And a late night too!! I
encourage all who subscribe to this list to join the meeting on wednesday
nights!! Not only is it a good learning forum, but it is a good place to
meet & develop friendships!

Talking about memorable storms, I think the best I have been in was when I
was 16 and staying at Leura in the Blue Mountains. I remeber seeing the
development, and then the squall line came through. Lightning struck the
house I was staying in 4 times, hail covered the ground like snow, and the
wind roaring up the valley was incredible. Raining was pelting against the
window pain, and I remember seeing the Mammata (sic) sloud after the storm
had passed, and how spectacular it looked against the sun set.

Sounds like a great idea. But how do we achieve it, perhaps we use an existing vehicle like Storm News, or make a similar publication.

It would be good to be more organised.

Further to my previous email, I have just thought about stepping on peoples toes, and I don't want to do that! So to the guys who have been round for ages.......Michael Thompson, Jimmy, Michael Bath, Laurier, Ira (& any others who I havn't mentioned....) PLEASE don't think that this is an attempt to over-run u guys or anything - just that it seems like a great idea....and hopefully everybody thinks so too!
Other things we could do as a group:

a.. Yearly conferences with guest speakers Like the guys above or people from Met or even internationals...u never know!
b.. More regular organised chases in centres all over australia
c.. combined experience, technology & knowledge!
            d..
So what does everyone think?? Lets do it !!

At 11am cool 20C, 1019 steady, 55% humidity, some cumulus from west,
spreading out to strato-cumulus. 5/8 cover. A weak NW breeze has developed
in the last hour. Way down south is total cloud cover with some healthy Cu
over the far southern ocean horizon, looks like a S change headed this way
around lunch time.

Tried hard to rain yesterday evening, but did not get there.

Mark,

Will the channel replace the existing one, or will it be an additional
subscription? I hope that it replaces the current one.

I like the idea of having discussion of conditions - it is what is lacking
in this country. Apart from some detail on obscure radio channles at
irregular intervals, there is nothing. It will be useful to hear what
meteorologists are forecasting, rather than just interpreting data we
retrieve from the net.

You are welcome to browse through our weather photography collection to
choose some images you would like to use:
http://australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/photography/

for the effects of strong winds and other weather photography, I suggest
Michael Thompsons pages:
http://thunder.simplenet.com/photo/photo.htm

Please keep posting messages to the list to keep everyone informed of
progress. I think all will be thrilled with a Weather Channel more like
what is offerred in the US.

regards, Michael

No warnings. A late weak S to SE change is expected.

Forecasts for Sunday are now worse - looks like another rain event expected
in northern NSW. Sydney is now fine with fresheing NW winds for Sunday.

Hi everyone,
I love the idea of a new weather channel and I love the idea of sending

of submitting photos over the net? I've got a Mac 6400 and have access

no Web space...

The best way to move files like weather photos around the internet is with
FTP (file transfer protocol). The most widely used ftp client for the
Macintosh is called "Fetch" is free to users affiliated with an
educational institution or charitable non-profit organization.

It can be downloaded from:

	http://www.dartmouth.edu/pages/softdev/fetch.html

The one trick you should know is:

>From the menu go to:

	customize | upload | preferences

and change "Default non-text format" to "Raw Data". The default
"MacBinary" setting is best used only for Macintosh to Macintosh
transfers.

The problem however is to find a place to ftp to, and setting up passwords
etc. If that part can be taken care if, ftp is a much more reliable way of
transferring files that e-mail, where there are many competing standards
and limits placed on mail space.

Get a decent photo type program and save as JPG images, the better photo
programs will let you preview the compressed image so that you can decide
what amount is best for any individual photo, believe it or not some
compress better than others.

Hi all...good IRC chat last night by the way!

Here is the forecast for the Darling Downs tomorrow :
    DARLING DOWNS AND GRANITE BELT:
Fine at first. A few showers and thunderstorms developing late Friday
in the west and south. Light to moderate E/NE winds.
Outlook for Saturday - Afternoon showers and thunderstorms

The D Downs incorporates cities such as Warwick, Stanthorpe, Toowoomba,
Oakey, Dalby and Inglewood. The strange thing about the forecast : the
Warwick forecast is fine (that's in the southern part) I don't know
Stanthorpe's forecast but I guess its a chance of storms.

Saturday's forecast sounds good, but we'll have to wait and see. I'm
disappointed Brisbane's forecast for Sun and Mon is fine. Especially
Monday -- I think something will happen then. Now the Bureau believe that
the bigger day could be Tuesday...but I'll believe it when I see it!!

Michael just read your letter in the Sept/October edition of the US
magazine Weatherwise(to which I subscribe). Thank you for pointing out to
the yanks that Australia does have interesting and exciting weather of all
kinds. i know you were replying to an earlier article supposedly by an
Australian living in the US who said Australian weather is boring but it
was a well written letter and hopefully will lead to some americans
checking out those URL's you mentioned in your letter. Dane Newman.

The channel won't be on Foxtel but on Austar. Unfortunately that means it
won't be available in Sydney. Yes, the US weather channel is being used as a
model. The long term objective is to provide the viewer with more of a real
time look at forecasting and weather interpretation. Special user group and
topic segments will also be a feature. I am hopeful we can do a special
thunderstorm hotspot segment whenever they are happening.

Thanks for the offer for the photos. I'll check them out. I'll let you know
which ones we use.

I will continue to post info as we get closer to launch

regards, Mark

Michael is right. JPG is the way to go. You can usually send these by email
and if you stick to the JPG suffix they can be opened by both PC and Mac
users. The other thing to remember if sending from a Mac is to make sure you
use the UU encoding instead of the Mac binhex. This setting is usually
somewhere in the attachments setting of your mail application.

The Navy site with those models we all love now has a full set of MRF maps
out to 144 hours.

http://www.fnmoc.navy.mil/wxmap/web/index.html

On the bad side MRF and AVN are pretty much in agreeance for the weekend,
perhaps something Sunday in the north, Monday elsewhere. NGP is a bit more
gung ho about the spread of storms.

Lets hope we get one, I am fearful about how this spring has been shaping up
perhaps things will bounce around in November, the Indian Ocean seems not to
exist at present. From over 700mm of rain in August I now have to water the
lawn to keep it alive. True.
