These are the notes i wrote while i was stuck at work about the storm as it
hit the concord/fivedock area of sydney.

9.30 pm, went outside and observed lightning towards the west towards the
blue mountains.

9.50 observed a nice shelf cloud extending all along the city(could make it
out by the reflection of lights!

10.05pm, wind picking up,lots of lightning to the west.moving very fast
towards the coast.

10.20pm storm hits, heavy rain and lots of lightning, cannot tell if there
is hail or not.. ARG 5 car loads of people as ths storm hits !!!
GRRRRRRRRR(lightning VERY frequent, very frustrating being stuck at work.)

10.40 main body of the storm has passed, constant rain and lightning still.

11pm, went outside again, storm headed slightly towards the north, the city
probably missing the main brunt of it.(although i cant confirm..)
i reckon ive missed one of the best lightning shows in months,at least this
year.

11.30 still no signifficant drop in temperature, maybe 1-2 degrees maximum
drop.. but i cant really tell..still sprinkling lightly,

all of that was what i wrote word for word on a piece of paper during the
storm..(i had a view out a glass window so i could spot lightnig/heavy rain)

4am, got back from work.. very muggy and im tired so i must go to sleep :)
hope im up by 11am to catch any action planned for tomorrow!!!

night all...or morning ? ;)

Matt in sydney, (hope this in depth enough for ya!
http://www.marine.csiro.au/~lband/storm/199811070852.html has a

beautiful pic of the storm systems that hit....(lat 34 is approx where syd is)

10.30pm Saturday

The radar showed a line of storms from off Moruya to Sydney, it seemed that
lightning was all around except in the southern Illawarra, tried to get a
few photos but it was not consistent enough.

Very light rain now falling.

Went as far as Picton, the haze was just too thick, in the end I went home.

I can understand your situation but from here, I was not going to bidge
until something really popped up. You would have been in a better situation
had you gone up during the night. You would have observed a nice shelf
cloud.

I took some video footage of it from my place and then the battery ran out.
But I got at least 30 minutes or so if reasonable structure and some nice
'cow' thunder. The other battery is stuffed lasting 5 minutes...

I received 15mm of rain. We had a gust front well ahead of the storm which
mean the storm was weakening. It shows on the nasa satpics that the
reflectivity of the cold cloud tops break down near Sydney rather than
intensify. Some nice structure as I said

My pet hate scenario, early morning southerly changes. S/SW wind picking up
here to 20 knots now, about 9.30am.

Last nights activity was very weak here in southern Illawarra. There was
plenty of lightning around, but very little close, it was also hard to get
any decent shots as there were no concentrated cells as such, you would see
one great flash to to NW, turn the camera there, and then nothing for the
next 2-3 minutes, except for a flash to the SE, E, S, N, etc, anywhere the
camera was not pointed.

Like Matt said, the storm here too was proceeded by a long shelf cloud, I
was in a relatively dark area and could make it out easily.
Here the shelf cloud had outrun the main body of the rain by at least 15
minutes. Well I say rain, but the gutters did not get a flush here there was
that little.

Actually the whole storm had that " worn out " look and feel, it must have
been great back west of the ranges. Which gets back to another reason why
the lightning was so hard to take pics of, it was mostly weak short multi
branch anvil stuff, very few CG's, in fact I probably only say 3-4. I looked
far more impressive on radar than in life.

We had lots of cgs. There were several suburbs blacked out. I got quite a
few on the video. I will look at it when I get time.

I don't think the change or cloud mass is through yet. If the air is drying
off and the cloud is clearing, tell us?

In fact, you may be observing a pre frontal trough line which has passed
through. Check the current sunoptic chart.

There is another line of activity developing to the S ans SW. There are
nice towers hidden amongst the cloud layer. This proves the air is very
unstable and we may still see more thunderstorms yet.

Storm chase is now on to the SW of Sydney. Anyone who wants to go, contact

At 12.30pm EDT, the air over Canberra has stabilised markedly in the last 90
minutes.

Activity is still evident to the ENE (with embedded Cb in the cloud mass)
moving away quite rapidly. Localised cells are developing to the east of
Canberra at the moment (before the upper atmosphere stabilises and cuts the
tops off). To the south through to the WNW there is almost total clearance
apart from isolated fair weather cu.

Some showers earlier this morning and last night's activity resulted in
around 15mm.

Hi Jimmy et al,

re Weather shots at night.
How do you get video shots onto film for scanning!?
I've been attempting lightning shots for years on camera, but without
time exposures (and I'm damned if I know how THAT works in built-up
areas!) I've had VERY limited success. (One shot only - pure luck!)

Hi Matt,

In Wycheproof, (in NW Victoria) it's bloody beautiful! (If you like
clear, mild and sunny! : { )
Had a very shallow CB about 11 a.m. yesterday (bark much worse than its
bite).
Looks like another quiet week.

Yours,

Hi Kevin...I dont know what Jimmy uses, but u can get a program whereby u
play your video via your computer. You can then pause shots, or capture
pieces of video that u need. There are some hardware requirements , such as
leads & video card (which u should have already), but its pretty easy.

Ps we are getting a storm here now, thunder, cc & cg lightning, and some
moderate to heavy rain

Paul.

Hi Paul,

Thanx for the info, but how good a video do you need? I mean are the
stills of photo quality?

P.S. Where the heck are you situated? I mean thunderstorms...you must
be in NSW or further! :))

Kevin.

Hi every1,

I'm really new to this e-mail game so I thought I may as well ask an
obvious dumb-as question.

Do you receive e-mail (say, from the aussie-weather list) while you're
actually in it? i.e. if I go away for twenty minutes will new mail come
in, or do I have to close down and re-open?

Yours, in ignorance,
Kevin Phyland.

Hi Kevin, Im at Taree on Mid North Coast of NSW.
The stills can be quite good depending of course of he quality of the
film/camera etc. But yeah you can get some great shots. The better option I
reckon is to get a digital cam...much better.

Howdy Kevin.......
to receive mail u normally have to hit the button send & receive mail.

However (depending on what type of prog u have) u can select an option that
checks for mail every so many minutes and notifies you when there is new
mail

If u use Microsoft, go to tools, and options, and u will see it.

Paul.

Kevin,

It depends on your e-mail provider and the software you use to read your
mail. My system checks every minute that I'm connected, other systems
only check for new mail when you open the mail reader. Sometimes you can
choose how you check for mail in the configuration of your e-mail reader.

Hi all

Is there anyone with a clear view of the storm approaching Ballina right
now? It's a distance from me but I've still seen very strong updraughts
with cumuli anvil and nice 'knuckles' on the western side. There are TCU
and some CB to its west trying to get going. Check the energex lightning:
http://bastion.energex.com.au/strike/

I assume those south of that cell would have a bad view due to rain

Hi all

That storm I told you all that was approaching Ballina died, but there is
slightly encouraging t'storms/t'shrs SW of Brisbane near Stanthorpe. The
precip is in a line NW-SE from Longreach - Charleville through Qld/NSW
Border areas then to the NSW North Rivers.

I'm hoping to see at least some good lightning to the south tonight. Keep
watching the lightning detection.

If the Darwin BOM forecasted them, there would be a Severe T'storm Advice
for the Alice Springs area. Their forecast:

ALICE SPRINGS:
Cloudy periods with one or two gusty storms. Severe wind gusts and
hail are possible with storms. Moderate east to northeast winds.
Min 17 deg; Max 31 deg
OUTLOOK - Storms/rain.

See ya

Hi people, again

Well I was hoping for some good lightning to watch tonight but it doesn't
look so good now. There's fibrous anvils to the SW and S but not too
interesting. Some activity may continue around Stanthorpe but with the heat
of the day, everything has eased. If anything happens, I won't miss it!

The trough responsible is weakening but should still cause t'storms from the
NSW mid north coast to Brisbane. Any activity here would probably be more
likely through the inland.

James

Hi All,

Ok - so where was Michael B this weekend? Well, away from the net and
chasing, visiting friends near Toronto (western shore of Lake Macquarie -
SW suburbs of Newcastle).

Saturday dawned similar to Sydney and Wollongong by the sound of it: thick
stratocumulus gunge and cool with calm conditions. This burnt off by about
10.30am with small cumulus and a light northerly blowing. The moisture haze
was quite thick, limiting the view somewhat. It was not until about 1pm
that I could see some congestus - to the far north and also a little to the
west. The stuff to the west did nothing but the convection to the north
continued and developed into a Cb within an hour.

At around 3pm some anvil cloud spread in from the SW while the large
cluster to the north was becoming quite spectacular. My friend and I drove
up to Mt Sugarloaf west of Newcastle (412m elev) to get a better view. At
the top it has a 360 degree panorama, only interrupted by 3 large
telecommunications towers. The storm to the north I guessed was about 150km
away, putting it near Taree. A line of congestus spread westwards from the
main area of action, although the awful haze prevented any view of base
features. It was still photogenic of course, with nice crisp updraft towers
and sharp anvil speading ENE. To the west and SW through the haze we could
see what appeared to be weak Cbs in the background, and turkey towers
closer - probably over Wollemi NP. After about 30 minutes a large thick
anvil structure could be seen through the haze to the distant WNW.

After we headed back home and the sunset approached (~6pm), this system
could be seen in its full glory! A thick anvil with overshooting bulges in
at least 4 locations strectched from NW to N probably over 250km in length.
At the rear of the storm could be seen backshearing and mammatus. This was a
big storm - I guess it was pushing the 15km mark in height - much higher
than the storm observed earlier to the north. By about 7.30pm it had began
to weaken, dashing hopes for a lightning show. If you want to see the storm
I was looking at, have a look at the CSIRO site:
http://www.marine.csiro.au/~lband/storm/199811070711.html
The storm is the oval 'blob' at 32 degrees S, east of 150, also visibly
weaker 100 minutes later at a similar location:
http://www.marine.csiro.au/~lband/storm/199811070852.html

At about 11.30pm some thunder and lightning occurred followed by rain all
night and today (Sun 8/11).

regards, Michael

As far as video and scanning, you are better buying a snappy, or similar
device, some only cost $150.00 these days.

Camera shots at night requires lots of patience, a tripod and cable release,
Michael Bath would better advise on exposure settings etc, I go 2-3 F stops
up from fully open.

One thing I have learnt is that stills are not as good as photos on
resolution, but there are advantages

- Unlimted stills, you can always get 'that' shot

- True colour reproduction, you will be surprised just bad colour
reproduction with most film labs is

The other thing which makes a massive difference is Hi8 vs normal 8mm,
stills from Hi 8 are far better quality.

If you want to see some general video stills ( not Hi 8 ) go to

http://thunder.simplenet.com/travel/across.htm

I have about 30-40 video stills from around Australia.

Michael
