Hi Brian - and everyone else. I too am new, but have been fascinated by the info so far contained in your mail. Brian, I was at Mt Evelyn yesterday afternoon at 4.00p.m. Skies clear. By 4.15 the dark purple build up of what looked for all the world like a big thunder storm with strong winds had built up on the nearby mountains. Was actually a little anxious with 2 small kiddies in tow. At Wandin, skies still threatened, and then - phhht - like a tyre with a slow leak, it fizzled out. Glad you raised it, because I was very curious. Thought it must have dropped off the mountain.

Cheers

Nan

Well - it turns out the storms yesterday caused more damage than first
thought, with reports now flooding in. In Gatton(70km W of brisbane),
Dalby(160 km WNW) and Tara(??) roofs were ripped off, and power cut to most
people during the storm. In Stanthorpe (approx 170km SW) there is said to
be several hundred thousand dollars in crop damage. In Rosewood and Marburg
(The site of the brisbane radar) west of brisbane, golf ball size hail and
strong winds caused damage to crops as well as houses. On the Sunshine
Coast (70km N of brisbane) 2 homes were completely unroofed and a 3rd
partially unroofed, as well as downed power lines all in one street. In
Redcliffe where i live (25km NE of brisbane) , no more than 100m down the
road a man was struck by lightning (well actualy the strike was very close
by and the air apparently becomes electrified). He got a large fright, but
no substantial injuries. Also there are several reports of 2 hang-gliders
seen being blown out into moreton bay before the storm, The coast guard is
still searching. There are still reports coming in, and there was also
torrential rain throughout brisbane causing local flooding in many areas
including western redcliffe. I saw on TV lightning with up to 4 return
strikes.

The soundings are not as promising thismorning, although there is some
healthy convection early thismorning already. The forecast reads:

 BRISBANE METROPOLITAN AREA
A few showers and afternoon thunderstorms today, easing to showers tonight
and
early Thursday. Light to moderate S to SE winds today, freshening tomorrow.
Brisbane Airport for Thursday ... MIN 18 MAX 26
Outlook for Friday ... Fine MAX 27
Saturday ... Shower or storm MAX 28

They are forecasting a 30% chance of storms between 3pm & 8pm today!!
At present there is a healthy buildup of Cu to the NE over the Yarra Valley
and a little to the west past the airport. Could get interesting later.

     Hi Paul and everyone,

As I mentioned I can easily get a room at the uni BUT: Jimmy has
suggested that Parramatta may be a bit more central (perhaps in a club
or something); and he is probably right.

I think that everyone who intends going should drop a message to the
list which indicates whether they're happy with Parramatta and also
what time they can get there on the 3/12/98. Those more familiar with
the area might be the best to suggest exactly where it would be held
and then we can set a time to suit, hopefully, everyone.

P.S To all those people new to the list, Paul Mossman, following up on an
earlier proposal by storm chasers Jimmy D, Michael T, Michael B and Ira F last
year, is organising the set up of an Australian storm chaser society. As the
name suggests the society will be pretty much dedicated to storm chasing rather
than general weather. Anyone interested is invited to attend the meeting which
will be more on organisation than storms. It is being held in Sydney simply as
this is most accessible to the majority of storm chasers.

Hi all...if you want storms, come here!

SOUTHEAST COAST FORECASTS
A few showers tonight, with isolated thunderstorms chiefly in northern
parts.
Isolated showers early Thursday, clearing during the morning. Light to
moderate
S to SE winds, freshening overnight.
Outlook for Friday ... Fine.
            Saturday ... Showers and thunderstorms.
            Sunday ... Showers and thunderstorms.

The BoM were right last time they forecasted a prolonged t'storm situation,
and hopefully they will be right this time. Weekend storms are great!

Right now there are isolated weak storms to the SW which *may* come here,
but it certainly doesn't feel like a storm with fresh & gusty SE's and a
full overcast of high cirrus and altostratus. There would be the odd large
cu embedded.

Parramatta is OK with me on 3/12/98 but I can't make it there before
about 8:30pm unless I can make special arrangements at home that
night. I said before that I needed to go to Melbourne but that meeting
has now been rescheduled.

I can arrange a venue if you agree to hold your meetings in the Sydney
CBD after normal work-hours (19:00) with easy access to public
transport, after-hours parking nearby at some $5 to $10 net cost, an
18-person room (expandable to 40) complete with internet access (maybe
not IRC), video players, video, computer & slide projectors plus voice
and video conferencing facilities if required. BYO coffee cup and
food. I also have access to another facility capable of supporting up
to 70 people with a large overhead video projector etc. and internet
access but minus video conferencing. Let me know if interested.

I saw on the channel ten news that there was a tornado at caloundra. There
was no footage of course, but they showed some of the damage - a few roofs
destroyed, trees torn down etc. They said it lasted for two minutes.
They also said it was the first tornado in queensland in 25 years. I wonder
whether they made that figure up themselves.
Anyone have any more info?

Hi all

I just saw a report on the Ch 10 5pm news that Caloundra was hit by a
tornado. There were eyewitness reports of a cone shaped cloud and branches
swirling around in the air. I might add the reporter or Ch 10 also said it
was the first tornado in Qld for 25 years!! So I guess we'll have to see
other reports about the Caloundra tornado to back it up. It looked like
F2/low F3 damage.

Just have a look at my storm reports pages to see the tornadic activity
we've received since the '73 tornado!

Hi Everyone,

I am happy with having the venue in Parramatta as it is a lot closer to
where I live. I would also be able to attend the meeting at any time as I
currently have no commitments. Here in the Blue Mountains today there were a
couple of heavy showers but unfortunately no thunderstorm activity.

If Michael Scollay is able to provide such a great venue, then that is
where it should be held: 7pm in the CBD. Both Jimmy Deguara and myself will
certainly be able to attend.

If anyone living in the western suburbs or further afield (Michael Piper)
would like to get to my place in the Blacktown area, we can then travel
together to the city. Please email me if you are interested.

Michael S: if you would care to give us the address details and also of the
nearest parking station. I think this venue should be finalised asap to
enable intra/interstate visitors to finalise their travel plans.

that is the url for the WWW chat, if you have mIRC or any other chat program
(i think you can use any) you need to be on an Undernet server, and the room

Unfortunatly the New Zealand and some european undernet servers dont let
Australians on, the best server I have found is the New Brunswick server,
in your status window, type:

/server NewBrunswick.NJ.US.Undernet.Org

Even though our Australian weather meetings are only once a week, anyone is
still welcome to come at any time of the day during the week. Myself and a
few other Australians visit the channel most days, and if we're not there,
there are others, mainly from the United States, who would love to talk
weather with you. The quiet times on the channel are usually when the
Americans are asleep, with the most active being in the morning/early
afternoon Australian time when its prime time in the USA.

Hope to see more of you there.

Brian try the WWW chat:
http://www.iinet.net.au/~jacob/chat.html

Or just choose a different undernet server if you havn't already, an easier
way may be to choose Random Undernet Server at the top of the list.
