Terry,
At 1.10 pm, radar showed two small cells, one WNW of Bathurst and the
other south of Midgee, both bringing localised heavy showers. however,
stabilizing atmosphere menas that Orange will be lucky to get anything
this afternoon - but then again, we've been wrong before.

Hi All,
I sent this once but it has not arrived so I am trying it again. Please
excuse if it turns up twice.

The most promising day we have had for a while. Some stratocumulus/cumulus.
At the moment there is a small amount of altocumulus castellanus showing a
small level of updraught activity. Hopefully this might lead to a DECENT
storm later.

In the warm but fantastic city of Orange at the 10.30am:
26C, 1015, 35%, Slight E draft at about 1 Kt. The ACC cloud is coming in
from the west which is a good sign.

Well I have to say i have been a bit harsh about Melbourne, it's
really my bad luck. Everytime there have been storms in Melbourne
I am out of town, where no storms occur, therefore it has now been
since October since I saw a storm (I dont count the p at # at weak effort
(5claps of thunder) the other day as a storm.

Once again, here's hoping for Sunday

Hi all,

Some storms in NE NSW - don't look too bad actually. Some lightning is
showing up near Tenterfield, anyone in the vicinity? Can you see
anything? I thought there might be some storms in NE NSW and around the
border ranges, but not until tonight! Actually - this morning I thought
Brisbane might be in for a slim chance, with some well developed Cu and
some TCU to the north - very hazy too. However the soundings don't
support it at all, but neither do NE NSW's, so I'd favourable t'storm
conditions are moving in. Tomorrow looks like the best day, I'd be
surprised not to get some good storms tomorrow. The only thing letting
us down is the jet - we'll be near a 50kt jet, but I'd prefer to be over
a 100kt+ jet! But then again, I can't be too greedy.

Brisbane AP obs at 1pm EST (0300UTC) 29C, 58% humidity, 1008hPa and
falling.

Hi All

For those that don't know *I* live in the storm disappointment capital of
the southern hemisphere! (Adelaide, SA - Beulah Park to be exact. ~5km
east of the CBD)

Here's hopint the front Sunday *Will* kick up something!!

Having said that - I've got cumulus castellanus popping up and down right
outside my window at the moment. There's a line of them in the lee of the
Mt Lofty Ranges (easterly airstream). I don't suppose it'll amount to
much, but its lovely to sit in the shade (it's ~37degs here) and watch the
tiny detail of each little exploding cauliflower rise and then decay....

Hi all - some storms in SE QLD too, near Warwick and just south of
Toowoomba. Although they are a weaker then the NE NSW ones - which
appear to be encroaching on the QLD border now as I speak. Lets hope we
get something up here! But it looks like only the GC at the moment,
unless the storms take a slightly more N'ly path.

I know that this morning Jimmy was keen to get up into the upper
hunter today for a chase after the ASWA meeting (at Parramatta in
Sydney's west). The meeting, which was excellent, turned out to be a
bit longer than expected. We concluded it with an observation session
on an upper level of the 2ky building a hint of promise led to another
obervation session on top of Rooty Hill - from here it was clear that
the preferred action was to our north. Grant B informed us of the
severe advice out for the area which was around 2 hours to the north.
Unfortunately I had to go home although the guys (Michael Bath,
Michael Thompson, Jimmy Deguara, Geoff Thurtell, Paul Mossman, Matt
Smith and Matthew Piper) were looking to head out in that general
direction so - hopefully they did got onto something.

Cheers

David

Hi all,

Lightning tracker is going off - has been for the past couple of
hours...storms are about 40km away, can see lightning to my SW, about 1
every second...only sheet at the moment, but that's all that would be
visible considering it's still partly light outside. Storm had nice
structure, fairly crisp anvil in some areas too - and somewhat
backsheared. Looks like we'll get a nice show tonight!

Thanks Dane, where is Kilsyth again. 21 thunder days is not too bad, and 6
hail days would have Jimmy envious.

Todays tentative chase has led me to think that a list of phone numbers of
willing visual observers would be nice.

But only phone numbers for those who do not mind being called for a visual
check. For instance this afternoon we knew that there was something hiding
behind the Cu rubbish along the Blue Mountains, but did not want to risk a
drive. With a phone number of a willing weather list person we could have
rung someone in Orange or Bathurst and asked what the conditions were like.

But again I stress that it must only be people who will not mind having to
answer the phone to storm hungry chasers.

Anyway mine is 02 42 971693 Shellharbour, ( Illawarra, NSW ).

Jane: would it be Ok to add the numbers to your list, or perhaps a separate
list is better ?

Michael

We went as far as Richmond, from there we got occasion glimpses of anvil to
the NW, but the Cu rubbish on the ranges keep the rear of storm hidden,
therefore we did not know whether it was north, on or south of the highway,
realising that a drive to Lithgow would prove frustrating if activity was
north of the Great Western we stayed put at Richmond for at least an hour.
So long in fact that the local farmer who looked like he walked out of the
deliverence script, got suspicious and drove down to find out what we were
about.

Anyway the Cu along the ranges started breaking down later in the day and we
called the chase off. Once I got far enough east to see above the rubbish
there was a nice back sheared anvil with fresh growth, perhaps 100 -150 km
NW, I would say between Lithgow and Mudgee.

Back in Wollongong the SE was freshening and surprisingly there was Cu
growing out of the stuff just offshore, including one southwards that may
have affected Jervis Bay, but they were being sheared off, so it was only a
shallow SE flow.

11pm now and drizzle has occurred over the last hour, must be very low level
as radar does not pick it up well.

Regards
Michael

The TV guide in Wollongong indicates nothing on. I have almost forgotten
what lightning at night looks like.

Hi all,

Well...it poured here in Brisbane! Initially, lots of lightning and
thunder, lightning was visible for around 3hrs, with thunder audible for
about a little over 2hrs. Initially it seemed to be fairly dry here,
but around 9pm is POURED...we had 54.7mm of rain in 45mins! Apparently
a lot of flash flooding around the place. We had 8 inches of water
flowing down our street! I walked outside with an umbrella to see the
water, stood in it, I had water splashing up to my knees, and I almost
fell down from the force! Never seen water flow like that down a normal
suburban street before.

My dad was at the farm today too(at hiddenvale, 70-80km WSW of
Brisbane), he reported winds of "80-100km/h" he hadn't checked around
much since it was dark after the storm, but he said some large branches
had fallen. I asked him to tell me if any other damage occurred (ie
trees fallen) to help confirm winds of 90+km/h.

Tomorrow should be even better! With LI's -7.5 at 1pm...certainly will
be interesting and very exciting!

Anthony from Brisbane

I'm usually found in the Bayswater / Knox / Mt Dandenong area outside
working hours, Abbotsford during working hours (well, 7.30am - 5pm) - my
mobile is 0411 455 100 (24 hours).

BTW, I'm leaving Melbourne between 3 & 4pm on Wed arvo and driving to
Canberra, will be in Albury between 7 & 8pm, Gundagai by 10pm (if I haven't
pulled off the road for a sleep). I'll be in Canberra by Thursday am till
Sunday lunch (may be having lunch in Goulburn on Saturday) and then driving
back to Melbourne on Sunday afternoon along the Hume and then around through
Yea - if you see anything interesting and want a live-eye report, please
ring.

I'll add phone numbers to the list - people, can you let me know if it's ok
for publication on web pages when you send it to the list. Is it also
worthwhile adding your work suburb to the list - some of us work and live
quite a distance apart.
