Hi all,

Mike form Perth.

I have been 3 weeks without a post and it is high time that
I caught up on the to do things list that has been growing
larger by the day.

1. I live in Maylands in Perth, Western Australia
2. My phone number is (08) 9371 0195
3. My IRC nick is Chop
4. My home page address is http://strikeone.com.au (for a
link ta Grant)
5. My star sign is Cancer (Just though I might add that one)

6. Sorry about missing the ASWA meeting and not sending in
an apology as well.
7. Thanks for the excellent rundown on taking video footage
while driving
8. I am compiling the start of the ASWA home page and would
like people to send me pages that they feel they would like
to be included on the site (directly via my email). It is
still in its infancy as yet but with some input from members
things will definitely move a little faster from this end.
9. I am going to be published in the Australian Post in one
of the next two issues (probably the second one) in regard
to my lightning photography. Just though I would pass that
on to all of you so you don't miss it.
10. I have just seen some lightning off to the North of me
and its getting more frequent so I think I might be looking
a a small chase later on this morning (Now its 2.45 in the
morning)

Good rain has just started falling.

Southerly came through around mid night last night with strong winds that
started to move papers and removing small branches.

While driving was safe there were often small light projectiles like leaves
and rubish that kept your mind on the job.

At the moment,

G'day all,

I'm sending this from mailto:ausweather at netscape.net because our corporate
internet mail gateway has suffered a coronary and is now on life support. No
doubt a victim of a virus scam. I'll catch up with my old address tomorrow,
hopefully.

Weather-wise, wasn't it weird in Sydney to have the barometer hovering around
1008 all day yesterday (Wednesday) with almost no cloud in the sky and then to
have the bar rising to 1018 with the showers moving in...

Having spent a lengthy period dredging through high diurnal ranges
of temperature in Australia (something I was doing anyway as part
of my quality control work at the Bureau), I can now confirm that
the diurnal range of 35.0 degrees recorded at Ceduna on 16 October,
1998 is a new Australian record. The previous record was 34.9 degrees
at Kyancutta on 27 December 1963.

Records for each state are:

WA	34.5 (39.1/4.6) Esperance Downs 2/1/1953
NT	32.8 (31.2/-1.6)	Tempe Downs 11/9/1972
SA	35.0 (39.6/4.6) Ceduna 16/10/1998
	(34.9 (42.2/7.3)	Kyancutta 27/12/1963)
Qld	33.3 (38.3/5.0) Cambooya 21/10/1988
NSW	34.8 (45.4/10.6)	Maitland West 19/11/1968
Vic	34.1 (34.0/-0.1)	Fiskville 12/1/1957
Tas	32.5 (34.5/2.0) Geeveston 14/2/1980

(Those who have been following a thread on sci.geo.meteorology may
have noticed that I'd said that 35.0 had been set on three occasions;
an additional check showed that two of these three cases were
accumulated over more than one day).

While reading the 97/98 NSW BoM severe thunderstorm directive, I
noticed that a tornado warning product, inclusive in NSW severe
thunderstorm warnings, is provided.

For those who haven't read it:

"Inclusion of Tornado Warnings

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings which include mention of tornadoes,
should include the following statement
immediately following the issue time group:

THIS WARNING INCLUDES A TORNADO WARNING"

I think my eyes will pop out of my head come the time when I first see
this.

Also re. our recent debate on sev. advices and warnings:

"A Severe Thunderstorm Advice should be issued when:

Deep, moist convection begins, or is likely to begin, within an area
possessing an environment conducive to severe thunderstorms

Warnings are only issued for areas where there is adequate radar
coverage. If Sydney Weather-watch radar is not operational during a
severe thunderstorm event, forecasters may elect to issue or update a
Severe Thunderstorm Advice for the event".

Cheers

David
