There is an increasing amount of static on the radio. It's gone from
none at all two hours ago to one every 10-15 secs and increasing. The
Foxtel satellite has been showing that the trough to the west has
thickened in the last four hours and there appears to be two or three
lines of showers/storms developing. It has been humid all day, about
31-32C and 40-45% RH, so any action should be worthwhile.

TC Rona is gathering strength, now a Cat 2 with 130km/h winds...the 2pm
warning is expecting 180km/h winds tonight on the coast making it a Cat
3...they'll be at least on blue alert (possible yellow/orange?) Does
anyone know where to get information to find out what type alert an area
is on?

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

TC Rona (980hp) at about 2pm this afternoon was about 170km ENE of
Cairns and Moving WSW at 20km/h. Current intensity is Cat 2, with gusts
to 130km/h near the centre, but expected to Intensify to Cat 3 with gust
to 180km/h and be close the coast between Cairns and Townsville. So
there will be some nervous communities on the North coast this
afternoon, i sure wouldn't like to be in Tully, or Ingam at the moment
(BTW, those who havn't had time or havn't got around to checking it out
on the sat pics should do so, it's a beauty).

The models over the last couple of days have been bringing the low down
the coast of Queensland, and last night BOM changed their forecasts to
the same .. the last thing we need up here at the moment is more rain,
things could turn very nasty towards the end of the weekend if it does
happen..

Can you say, 1974?

Hi all,

I would be thinking that TC Rona's eyewall will be crossing the coast at
this moment. The latest advice at 10pm was:

Details of Tropical Cyclone Rona, Category 3, for 10 pm
Central Pressure : 970 Hectopascals
Location of Centre : within 20 kilometres of
                     latitude 16.4 degrees south
                     longitude 145.8 degrees east
about 50 kilometres north-northeast of Cairns
Recent Movement : west at 10 to 15 kilometres per hour
Destructive Winds : out to 100 kilometres from the centre
Maximum wind gusts : 180 kilometres per hour near the centre
The next advice will be issued at 11 pm.

I certainly hope our northern counterparts (Manda from Bowen and in
particular Rob are doing ok) and I think that all of us should certainly
keep the people of N. QLD in our minds...as although this is extremely
interesting, and for want of a better word 'exciting' for us, for 10's
of thousands of others it's devasting and terrifying. Lets pray that no
one is seriously injured, or worse killed and that damage is kept to a
minimum.

I have pasted the rest of the 10pm advice here:
