Sounds Great Nandina,

We get some lovely cloud formation up here in Blackheath.

Hi All,

A strange wet stuff coming from the sky. If my memory serves me correctly I
think it is called rain. Heavy enough to soak in but not cause erosion on
the bare patches of ground.

At 09.05 20C, 1010, 36%, No breeze.

 Terry.

Just looked at today's model runs.

The GASP, UKMO and US models all keep the centre tracking south along
approximately the 160 E line. The only model which is still pushing
the low westwards is the Bureau LAPS model - but this is the highest-
resolution of these in the Australian region, so it should be worth
watching.

I'd still expect the coast to pick up a fair bit of rain in the
SE flow and some heavy surf, but the serious winds should stay offshore.

P.S. A glossary for those not familiar with model-speak:

GASP - a Bureau global model - I'm not sure what the letters actually
       stand for!
UKMO - UK Meteorological Office
ECMWF - European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts
(all of the above are global models)

LAPS - Limited Area Prediction Scheme - the Bureau's short-range model
     - runs at higher resolution than GASP for the Australian region,
but only goes out two days.

While it still lasts, the 24-hour LAPS run and the 48- and 72-hour
GASP runs are still available on the Bureau's gopher site (not on
the web site, except to registered users). 3-6 day charts (surface
pressure only) are available on the ECMWF web site (www.ecmwf.int).
UKMO output is not available publicly anywhere as far as I know.

I think we need to also gather some gems from our Media reps e.g.:-)

THERE WILL BE RAIN TODAY WITH SUNNY PERIODS...

WINDS WILL CHANGE FROM UP NORTHWEST TO DOWN SOUTHWEST ACCOMPANIED BY
THE CHANGE...

(as rain begins to fall at the football) I THINK IT'S WET OUTSIDE...

IT SNOWED LAST NIGHT IN THE BLUE MOUNTAINS. REPORTS JUST IN TELL US
THAT IT HAS BEEN WASHED AWAY BY RAIN. POLICE HAVE ADVISED TO DRIVE
CAREFULLY IN WET AND ICY CONDITIONS SO TAKE NOTE IF YOU'RE GOING UP TO
TAKE A LOOK...

THERE'S THIS COLD FRONT SOUTHWEST OF ADELAIDE. I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT
MEANS. OOPS, SORRY, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT WILL DO. LET'S TRY THAT
AGAIN...

Television in the USA is famous for zooming in on that poor sucker
stuck out somewhere in nowhere. I remember one instance on the "TODAY"
show, I think, where the poor reporter giving on-the-spot info about
how cold it was said "AAASSS YOU CAAAAN SEEEE, IT'S CCCCCOLD OUT
HEEERE."

Good info Blair! Don't forget...

MRF - Medium Range Forecast etc. from NOAA that also includes AVN,
NGM, Eta and RUC but I have no idea what NOAA calls their core model.

Also, you can get GASP runs 7 days out for MSLP and Thickness from;

http://www.BoM.GOV.AU/bmrc/medr/mslpTH8.html

as an unregistered user. I wouldn't mind getting these maps in the
same B/W format as on the gopher site:-)

I think we need an ackronym-finder site for this stuff!

Has anyone noticed how the cloud band from the inland upper air disturbance
over eastern Australia has spiralled around - in the coastal low formation
style?

ex TC Frank is still well offshore at around 160E (Sydney is 151E) and is
certainly influencing the SE flow and the swell, but not having much impact
on coastal rainfall.

With the thunder just heard in Sydney and probable storms in the SW slopes
at present, looks like a surface low may form near the central NSW coast.
If the high pressure over the Bight strengthens and maintains the S-SE
winds, we could be in for some very heavy rainfall totals, regardless of Frank.

Two very close CGs just struck the buildings at Parramatta to my south!
The top of 'The Warratah' (on the Great Western Hwy) had a visible glow
after the bolt and a nice rumble of thunder 2 seconds later.

It's amazing how quickly non-weather people (at work) become interested in
the weather.

Kevin,

ASWA needs a correspondent in your part of the world - an individual of your
calibre (and photographic skills!!) is not allowed to disappear off the face
of the net permanently! We look forward to cheering your return in the
very near future.

All the best,

PS: the somewhat archaic telephonic and postal communication systems still
work (well ... so I've been told), so we'll most definitely ring you when
there is something going!! - and then there's always the fax!!! - send us
