Hi everyone,

I've just added a few more photos to my site. They're not particularly new
(taken between about one to two years ago), but I just got around to
scanning them.

Hi everyone,
I wonder if there is more to come in the way of severe weather for
NSW. I had a look at yesterday's Williamtown stability trace which
seems to indicate moderate instability. Perhaps ahead of the next
front we'll get some more severe weather....

Hey Paul & everyone.

Yesterday around Taree / PMQ areas there was decent instability (but I
reckon a high cape figure) - including 2 or 3 CB that formed NE of here -
nice lightning out to sea last night. Im hoping for some decent weather as
it has been too long between drinks eehhhh storms I mean.

Looking forward to next ASWA meeting in Sydney.

I am hoping to come on the end of year chase - need some definite dates so
I can get some holidays.

regards, Paul at Port.

Likewise in my case. Wife has just had sprog#2, so family commitments will
no doubt impact my activities. However, I intend to take part at least on
a daily basis depending upon conditions, which should be possible being
based in Brisbane, although Moree is a fair hike. (Is not Moree rather too
far inland, and limited in terms of road network? I would have thought
that closer to the coast/dividing range (i.e., East of New England hwy) may
be more profitable in terms of both storm frequency & results..., plus if
there is no activity there are always the N.P.'s or Surf).

I too am extremely interested in the chase since it will most likely
be my first, but will only be able to attend also from a day to day
basis. Three weeks before the proposed start of chase I will have
just got back from a 3 month trip overseas to Europe, UK and
Ireland. So another holiday is out of the question. A question for
Les and whoever else can help - I am driving around UK and Ireland
for three weeks in October, what type of weather can I expect ( 10 -
20 degrees celsius is my guess)and even though I realise it would me
mid Autumn by then, any chance of "severe" weather? :)

I agree John. And as a bonus, for some of the chase, We could use my place
as a base (I have a few spare rooms that people could bunk down in - thus
saving accom costs??)

Ps I have 4 spare rooms which a few spare beds etc could be used and if
some Sydney people brought travel beds?? All we would look at then is
food.....a much cheaper way?

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

There was actually some decent instability around SE QLD yesterday as
well.. there was some great looking congestus around during the morning,
but it had that "coastal maritime" look to it.. the afternoon made way for
some harder and healthier stuff - in the early afternoon i photographed a
Tcu that had a top not unlike the Orange Storm (the edges of the Tcu were
folded over if you know what i mean) - and there was actually some isolated
thunderstorms inland during the late afternoon.. unfortunately they stayed
inland, with only the odd shower making it to the coast..

Some healthy Cu having a go at the cap at the moment (12pm), i doubt if
we'll see anything today though..

It may not be a great time of year for thunderstorms, but by October
there can be some very impressive mid-latitude depressions; 1987 is
the most famous, but I was in the middle of one in October 1989 in
western Ireland with gusts up around the 170 km/h mark - quite an
experience! (I attempted to go for a run in the middle of it, but
was literally unable to move into the wind).

Anywhere on the western coast has potential for these.

Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com

Hi Aussie-weather people! I've been very quiet for over a
month now. Good reason - travelling. I've scanned over 1200
messages and will avoid opening old wounds:-)

My young family and I travelled to Adelaide, Kangaroo Island
(KI), Goolwa, The Grampians, Ballarat, Mornington Peninsula
and Melbourne stopping a few days in each place over one
month. 6480km in all with 3 kids. It all went extremely
well with the weather being extremely kind to us.

I took a punt thinking that some really cold weather would
roll in from Fri 19 March. True enough, Adelaide got a wee
bit chilly and some decent rain overnight that was really
needed. With 16C in the city, I was recording 7/9C up in
the hills. That's one hell of a lapse. I knew that this
would deliver some unseasonal cold weather for NSW/VIC.

Taking a punt on what TC-Vance would do, we packed some
more winter woolies for KI. Talk about wierd weather!
Drove through 10/11C temps with rain on morning of 24
March. Arrived at Cape du Couedic to a strong W gale enough
to blow you over (~90kph). Temp now 16C. After lunch, temp
rose to 27C while a dust storm moved in cutting visability
to less than 1km. By 1700, temp fell to 17C and the dust
was blown away to be replaced by a W/SW wind. A day later,
the swell from TC-Vance moved in. I've got video of 10m+
waves! This swell lasted several days. Also, much fog all
day at Cape Borda on Thu 25 March is worthy of note.

I had a very interesting discussion with the observer at
Cape Willoughby. He's taken several waterspout pictures
from this magnificent location and backs up the AWS obs
with manual obs. Good to see manual obs continuing since
AWS's sometimes give weird readings. Cape Willoughby has
several "minus" temp records that are wrong plus minor
(<0.2mm) and intense precipitation events that are often
recorded by this AWS with errors. People are also better
at cloud obs:-( Needless to say both automatic and manual
obs have their place. I just hope that BoM budget cuts
don't lead to less manual obs since this could lead to
accuracy problems with the long term archive.

The rest of the trip was boring from an extreme weather
point of view with the only event worthy of mention being
the autumn season's first decent frost when we stayed at
Hall's Gap in The Grampians on Tue 6 April.

Finally, I was shocked by reports of the Sydney SC that
produced large hail. When damage reports came in and the
media ramped up for a serve at the BoM I knew that aussie
weather would provide interesting reading. I was not
dissappointed. I imagined those unlucky Sydney BoM people
gazing at the radar while muttering that immortal word
"s...!". There was bugger-all else that BoM could have
done since the extreme weather warning mechanisms through
the media and other means are inadequate for such events.
That, at least, has been clearly demonstrated. On a more
personal side, one associate I know had their car written
off by hail that split the steel on their roof. Dents are
the size of a small dinner plate! Another person who
supplied a Rolls Royce for a wedding on Saturday, had
damage done to the "Roller" when hail smashed through a
poly-prop and cement fibre roof sheeting. No scratches,
as the car was protected by a car cover but there are
noticable dents.

It was truely a wonder that no one was killed by this
hail. At least, that's as far as the info that I have
goes since I have not seen any news papers or listened
and/or watched much radio/TV in the last month. Holidays
are great for that reason alone:-) Any future ASWA role
in this sort of thing will undoubtedly be a top item in
future meetings. I can imagine that insurance companies
might have an interest in what we do and how we effectively
report about extreme events and/or mobilise.

Blair & others interested,

The Katoomba site is on Cliff drive about 200m from the
highest point in the Katoomba area where the water tanks
and aviation nav comms are located. It was moved at least
twice (I think). Sited in the original location in
the business area. Next move to the front yard of one
private residence in Cliff Drive 1.5km from the business
area but at a similar altitude, to the front yard of another
private residence almost directly opposite. To the west is
a 250m escarpment possibly 400m away. To the east lies a
valley where Catalina racing circuit and the Olympic pool
lie then another ridge on which the business area is
situated. Further east lies another ridge where the Leura
business area is located. The main E-W ridge forms the
backbone of the Blue Mountains where the main western rail
line and Great Western Highway are situated.

I'd say that Katoomba has a rating of 5 simply because
the site has been moved a number of times.

As for "that obs" of -8.2C, I was fortunate enough to be
recording temps in Sherman Ave that same day and made a
note in my diary to the effect "lowest temp yet recorded of
-6.5C". Now my crude max/min thermometer didn't make that
much of an error as it was only -1.5C at 8:00am. There was
no other way for that indicator to get pushed that far up
the min side unless the temp was very low. I can only
say that whenever that event occurred during the night,
it must have lasted only a few hours at most. Needless
to say, I was not that surprised when Katoomba recorded
the lowest state temperature that day.

Now as for reasons, I can only speculate. The official
site is up on the ridge away from the cold frost hollow
of the Catalina area. My location in Sherman Ave was
also up the hill a bit at the lower end of this valley.
Now I've travelled through this area in my car (Holden
Berlina). It is equipped with an outside temperature
sensor that is OK within a degree or so provided one is
moving. On a calm winters day in Aug 1998, I motored
toward the Olympic pool from the business area. One
actually travels from the east ridge, down into the
Catalina valley, then up to the west ridge very close
to where the Katoomba met obs station is located. Temp
on that Aug 1998 day went from +3C on the east ridge
to -3C in the valley rising to +2C on the western ridge.
Now when the wind blows, this frost hollow breaks up.
I could speculate that given particular conditions, this
valley forms a severe frost hollow. If a light E/SE
breeze were to blow hard enough, eddies of the cold
frost hollow air might just make it to the Katoomba
met obs site. This might have caused such an event
when -8.2C was recorded.

Same sort of effect in our Snowy Mountains often gives
something like -4C at Smiggins Holes, -7C at Perisher
Valley, -10C at Charlottes Pass and -1C at the top of
Mt. Perisher! Only in calm conditions though.

Are you referring to 1 June 1977?

I've checked this a bit further. The other stations in district 63
(Central Tablelands) were mostly in the 0 to -3 range. Lithgow was
-1.0. (Lowest was Oberon at -3.0) , and Mount Victoria was -2.5.
If your -6.5 was on 1/6/77 I'd be very interested to know about it (and
how your site compared with the main Katoomba site over a longer
period of time).

Agreed, but 1/6/1977 was a classic cold outbreak situation with a
strong W/SW airstream. Katoomba was reporting 14 knots at 0900; well
and truly enough to kill a frost hollow normally. (Many stations
recorded their lowest May max temps on record on 31/5, and there was
widespread snow).

Yes, only in calm conditions. I've posted previously on the Inverell
frost hollow. Woolbrook (S of Armidale) is another good one if the
conditions are right.

Hi all

Well after an erternity of boring werather in Melbourne it looks like we
could finally get some weather of interest. The front expected to cross
tomowrow looks like showing a bit more grunt than what was first expected.
Thw BOM is now forecasting local hail to develop in South West Vic on Tues
afternoon and the rest of southern areas on Weds Morning.

The latest Sat Pics have a nice looking pool of cold air to the south of
Australia, but it will have to move a fair bit north for Vic to get the
best of it.

But those lucky enough to live in Tassie can expect snow down to 400m
tomowrow and Weds.

Will keep the group up to date.

Barrington Tops experiences similar conditions. Unfortunately there are no weather
stations on the Barrington Tops. However, you can see how much temperatures vary
by the different sorts of vegetation. On the plateau areas, it is open alpine like
country, riddled with frost hollows, while the slopes are made up of thick forests
land varying with altitude.

During a June long weekend (you may think I was mad), I camped up on the tops. At
six oclock in the morning, using a mercury thermometer I measured a temperature
of 9C. Later on when the temperature there was still 4C, I drove down the road
only by a couple of kilometers and found the temperature to be +1C.

Yes. Media also reported a cold start to that winter. "Official"
first day of winter is 1 June, I think. I also kept the maps of
this particular cold snap which I've just told my father to dig
out of my roof storage in Katoomba (one never moves completely
"out" when leaving home).

I was a High School student in those days and only wrote up the
more notable events. I reset my thermometer each day but only wrote
about the more extreme events, keeping the maps from the newspaper.
Later that year, we moved into a new house near Echo point where I
set up some sort of Stevenson screen in the backyard. Sherman Ave
was a rented property, hence by no means a "stable" site. It would
be less than 1km from the official Katoomba met obs site as the
crow flies and about 40m lower in altitude at the end of this
"Catalina frost hollow".

I can now recall the basic weather at that time and I remain
at a loss to explain why such an isolated area should receive
such extreme cold. All I can confirm is that the recording is
plausible from what I recorded at the time. Pity that I didn't
keep more meticulous data.

This system looks almost as nice as the one that hit New Zealand recently. If
the LAPS models are right, there will be snow on the Snowy Mountains in Victoria
and NSW. It is also possible that there could be sleet or snow across the
central tablelands in NSW.

This is looking quite nice for this time of year. 1000-500 hPa thicknesses
are progged to reach about 5360m in Melbourne and 5260m in southern
Tasmania on Wednesday morning. It doesn't look like the cold air
will push far enough north for any serious action in central NSW.

(Roughly speaking, anything below 5260m opens the possibility of snow
to sea level - although one needs sub-5200 for it to become probable.
At 5360m you'd expect snow down to 1000-1200 metres).

I think the Tasmanian forecast, if anything, is a little conservative;
I wouldn't expect snow to settle below 400m (especially with relatively
warm ground temps), but the snow level could well drop below that in
the heavier showers.

Is there anyone on the list from Tassie? (especially at some sort of
elevation).

A perennial gripe of mine - it's quite difficult for us to know what
the snow level actually is in Victoria, as there is no site with
manual obs in Victoria above 450m except for Omeo, which is quite a
bit further east. More than once I've been reduced to ringing
assorted friends at various elevations in Macedon and the Dandenongs...

This outbreak could also bring some fairly significant frost in its
wake if things settle down quickly enough.

Looking at historical storm data John, I reckon the area west of the
great divide in NSW - from Armidale and out onto the NSW NW
slopes/plains are a far better bet, for really big storms, than the
areas east of the divide. Troughs linger over the inland areas for
longer which I guess provides more of an opportunity for all the other
factors to come together as well - the tornado data suggests that this
area cops many more tonadoes than the more eastern areas, granted there
is plenty of room for error with the Australian stats. On either side
the roads aren't ideal, but visibility would be better out west.

Just confirming, whoever is counting heads, that myself and also Darren
Heys (Sydney based ASWA member) are certain starters for the chase.
With the formation of ASWA and chasers from the different states/UK
congregating this will be an event not to miss.

Also, I'm hoping that among all the chasers going we can get enough
into amatuer radio which would be ideal on this sort of trip - only
need one licencee/unit per car. On a particular morning a 'high risk'
convective outlook might cover a large area of the northern
tablelands:) Some chasers may opt to follow their noses and go in
different directions so keeping contact will be essential to monitor
storm development as well as to keep tabs on everyone. I have told Paul
G that I would get a unit for the car (if others do to make it
worthwhile for storm chasing). We only need a few more and we should be
in business. Contact Paul, who is our resident expert, on amatuer radio
if your interested.

Cheers

David

Yet again (this has happened about 5 times now) mail I have sent to
this mailing list has not been received. I have no idea why. I am
not sure whether it is to do with using this free hotmail account but
one thing is that I sent some e-mail about 3 months ago from my
Macquarie Uni account and it never was distributed on this mailing
list. Does anyone know what might be happening?
Anyway, there wasn't really much in this last message but I thought it
might be interesting for people on this list. Take a look at the two
latest reports on the ABC's weather site about the Sydney hail storm:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/weather/weath-19apr1999-4.htm
and
http://www.abc.net.au/news/weather/weath-19apr1999-5.htm

Here's hoping! looking back over snow records there are a number of years
where
snow started piling up mid April.

Expecting 0C tonight, and only 14 on Wed. Just giving the Polartek a

wash and airing :)

It is funny that you should say that Paul as the AVN model has an almost
identical chart for Tuesday evening as it did for last Wednesday evening.
Mind you I thought nothing about last Wednesday until about 5.30pm.

I kind of feel that Woolbrook is misplaced as being included under NW slopes
and plains by the BOM, granted that rain that falls in Woolbrook runs west
into the Darling system, but it is really Northern Tablelands in my
reasoning, especially given its 1000m plus altitude.

It is near Walcha.

Yet again superb shots.

Do you have a well trained photo lab ? I nearly always get overexposed pics,
back in the days I took slides this never happened so I am blaming the
processing.

Even the US models seemed to have it wrong up until about 24 hours ago. They
have since adjusted to have a strong high pushing up a very cold S stream in
front of it, which is how the BOM are seeing it too.
