To which I might add Andrew,

1. For that squall line that's already on the horizon - Montefiore Hill
North Adelaide (Great views east, south and south west)

2. Upper Coach Rd Skye (Great Views west)

3. Osmond Rd, Mt Osmond (ditto)

4. Lighthouse at Marino Conservation Park (a short walk from the carpark
on Nimboya Rd, right over the sea, great views west to north)

5. Menglers Hill, Barossa Valley (I've mentioned this one before)

6. Top Of the Grove Way, Golden Grove (east, west, north)

With the caveat that reporting of snow appears to be patchy, to say
the least, in the climate archive (for example, Canberra's greatest-
ever snowfall in July 1949 failed to get a snow flag in the database,
yet another event later the same year did), and that some of the
high elevation stations have gaps in their record, the following are
dates of early- and late-season snow events in NSW:

Guyra (representative of highest parts of Northern Tablelands)

Earliest	13 April 1994
Latest 12 November 1965 (there is also a report from 11-12
November 1989, but as the minimum temperature for
these two days was 6.2, I doubt it)

Central Tablelands:

Oberon (note: several gaps in record - reliable only since 1990)

Earliest	8 April 1995 (also 12 April 1994). An alleged report
on 18 March can be discounted - min temp was 13.6.
Latest 27 December 1993 (also 22 November 1996, 16 November
		1988)

Orange

Earliest	8 April 1995 (also 11-12 April 1994)
Latest 22 November 1996 (also 7-8 November 1971)

Katoomba

Earliest	7 April 1995 (also 12 April 1996 - not 1994, though)
Latest 22 November 1996 (also 17 November 1983)

Southern Tablelands:

Canberra

Earliest	15 April 1940
Latest 3 November 1949 (also 27 October 1998)

Some more records from the weekend (although I haven't done a
comprehensive survey):

Canberra - lowest April min on record (-3.7 - previously -3.6 (1978))
on Sunday. (I rang the Canberra Met Office to confirm the observation,
having seen it as a -4 on the 0900 bulletin, and the person on duty
hadn't realised it was a record - I think he was getting ready to
scurry out and put out a media release once I rang :-)

Laverton (near Melbourne) - broke its April record of 0.6 on Saturday
(0.5) and again on Sunday (0.4). Quite impressive, as Laverton is
fairly representative (in terms of topography, distance from the coast
etc.) of what Melbourne used to be like before the urban heat island
got hold of it.

(Melbourne itself recorded 4.7 on Sunday, the lowest since 1979, and
the first instance since 19-21 April 1955 of three consecutive nights
below 6).

Although the station hasn't been going for long enough for the record
to be meaningful, I was also singularly impressed with Cooma Airport's
-8.4 on Sunday (especially as it still made it up to 18.9 during the
day).

The dryness of the air has been a feature; Melbourne's dew-point was
down around -5 at times on Saturday afternoon. Anything below 0 is
rare here.

G'day Phil and all

Unfortunately I don't have a lot of info concerning that event. Only this
from the report I sourced last email:

"In terms of damage cost, the Adelaide storm (22 Jan '91) was more severe
than the thunderstorm which struck the metro area on 6 December 1986, when
severe downbursts caused the equivalent of $11 million damage (adjusted to
'91 figures). The event of 22 and 23 Jan '91 compares in severity with the
severe thunderstorm outbreak of 14 November 1979 when downbursts and
tornadoes through mid-northern and eastern parts of SA caused the equivalent
of $50 million damage."

Hi again Phil, all

The Nov 14 1979 event was actually the one with not one but 2 damage paths
at least 250km long. I just found the report (which I didn't know I
had...doh), so I'll give you a bit more information in a couple of days
after I've gone through it. Certainly a significant event in the history of
severe Australian thunderstorms.

More broken records.
Geelong's lowest overnight temperature record for April (1.9 degrees) was
reached on the morning of the 24th. But there is a problem with Geelong
figures: they are measured at a rural airport and are never truly
representative of the urban area; nevertheless we'll use them for
comparative purposes. The 26th has also just recorded April's second
coldest day with 13.3 (Coldest 12.5 in 1995).
Regards to all.

I have been re-reading some of my stored snow stories/emails and the
email following this reminded me of our snowfalls last year.

We had some form of snow in each month from June through to October last
year. Heaviest dump was in August but some decent and somtimes heavy
(short-lived though) flurries in other months. We had snow on ground a a
few times but the best one was in August for sure. On that day my
partner took the train to work to Wentworth Falls (from here in
Blackheath) and she said it looked like the Rocky Mountains on the hills
out towards Shooters Hill way - that's around 1400 metres out there.
Shooters Hill is the high ground a few clicks south (roughly) of Oberon.

Here's hoping we get some nice white stuff this year. That cold air last
week was interesting, we had mornings of around 3-5 (stayed that way
say, until lunchtime) but not quite could enough or enough moisture for
snow, I guess.

Hi all

Not a bad little hail shower just passed over my place, Ashwood, Melbourne.

Stones about .5cm, nice cover on the ground and 7mm. Lasted about 5min.
Looking at the sat pic there is some nice cold air heading our way.
