This "service" is experimental, i.e. not to be relied on. It has
ceased several times before, then started again for no reason. The
Bureau appears to be experimenting with colour graphics for its model
output (not before time), and some colour TLAPS (Tropical LAPS) output
are appearing in the ftp pay-for service.

Oh that I could! I'm afraid the Gopher link above is all that is
available, and that will go when the Gopher eventually closes down --
unless Senator Hill can be moved to change the Bureau's current
commercialisation policies.

Cheers

The Bureau's climatic district boundaries are a bit of an enigma. Some
years ago, I plotted all Australian rainfall stations and their
numbers in a Readers Digest 1:1,000,000 (or 1cm=10km) Australian
Atlas. The rainfall station numbers include the district number. Then,
using the highest scale maps showing rainfall districts that I could
obtain from the Bureau, I set about plotting the district boundaries.
In areas where the rainfall stations are numerous, it was easy to see
that the original designer of the district boundaries had followed,
most commonly, watersheds or rivers. In flatter country, the lines are
pretty arbitrary. Some, like the division between the western and
eastern Northern Tablelands, perform a graceful arc that simply
divides a bigger district into two roughly equal halves.

Is there such a thing as a definitive climatic districts map, or
detailed description of these boundaries? Does anyone know anything of
their history, as they appear to have been unchanged since the very
earliest days of the Bureau.

To answer Michael's quandary, the division between the NW Slopes and
Northern Tablelands runs west of Inverell (which surprisingly is in
therefore part of the Northern Tablelands), then heads pretty much
south to pick up the watershed between the Gwydir and Namoi Rivers
west of Bundarra. It follows this until it is east of Woolbrook
(placing Woolbrook and the Moonbi Ranges in the NW Slopes), then
wanders south until it hits the boundary of the Hunter basin. Most of
the western Northern Tablelands district drains to the west.

Maybe we should explain the Canberra connection to Rob - he won't have a clue what's going on .

We've found that a significant number of the 110 people on the list either were born, live, or have lived in the Canberra / Queanbeyan area.

Um, now we're finding also that a significant number of us were, are, or are married to teachers - sheesh!!! - anyone like to try the next thread of commonality among our little group??????

It's now 10.15, Mark, and I cannot get into http, gopher or any ftp.
My CMSS data continues to come in OK, though, so it doesn't appear
they've had a total failure.

Everyone,

A reminder to set your email programs to "plain text" or "no formatting"
when sending (and replying to already formatted) messages to this list.
Formatted emails produce unexpected results in some email programs making
them difficult to read.

Also, if you are replying to a message, be sure to trim or remove any
irrelevant text before sending your comments. Some emails are 10kb in size
with only a one sentence comment, but contain multiple replies attached. If
you alter the subject of the thread, make sure you also change the subject

I spoke with Rod Davidson at BOM and he said their line to Telstra went down
this morning. Internally all is OK. Trying to get up again ASAP. ABC site is
still up to date. Perhaps they have CMSS too?

Just out of curiosity, is there anyone on this list who canot not
read formatted text? (If the "not" in the preceeding sentence came
out in italics, then you can read formatted text :).
(I used to clear all formatting myself but no longer know anyone
who can't read the formatting)

Chris I think the major problem may be that html or formatted emails come
out as attachments on differing email programs - such as mine we have Lotus
Notes (yeah yeah I know..................I had never even heard of it
before joining AG's) and every email you send comes as an attachment which
I have to open through Microsoft Internet Explorer. Whereas if they are
sent only in plain text there is no problem... although it doesn't really
worry me..

Cheers. Paul.

I think we're all human:-) That is unless there are some very
weird auto-mail-responders out there...

On that teacher thread, I am the only person in my direct family
who is NOT a teacher (profession-wise). Even among my relatives,
it is hard to find someone who is not a teacher or not part of
a tertiary institution. That's sort of a family history...

Perhaps such correllations explain our other common thread
- the desire to learn as much as we can about our favourite
subject and to help others to understand the same.

This means that "canot not" means "can", I presume, which could

What MichaelB refers to is not the odd formatting of text that
Chris has correctly used but the use of a HTML or RTF enclosure
to contain the fundamental message. That adds unnecessary bulk
for mail archival and makes the message virtually unreadable
from many plain text readers such as elm or pine etc.

Now to add another angle, I am a mobile person who likes to log
into my computer over a humble telephone line or mobile from afar
and I don't like having to dump the entire message into the
portable when using a mail browser like Netscape or MS-Outlook
etc. So I use a little mail reader like elm via a terminal (telnet)
session. That's quick, easy, a little crude but ideal for basic text
messages. After all, I can see no need to move outside the bounds
of plain text messaging when that can be used to refer to the more
sophisticated material accessable through other means e.g. HTTP.

Hi all,

I agree with you Michael Scollay, that it is easier to use plain text.

Michael Bath took on the mammoth job of collating and storing all the posts to
this list for the benefit of everyone.

It makes it easier for him (and the rest of us) to write in plain text.

By the way, thank you Michael Bath for continuing this service for us. I have
used it on many occasions and think it is an invaluable service that deserves
the utmost respect from all of us who communicate through here.

Didn't you say you were the only one in your family who was *not*
a teacher? :) Gimme a break - anytime prior to midday is too
early in the morning for us programmers

I actually received an email from MichaelB saying that my email
actually arrived as a separate attachment. A followup email to
him with no formatting at all arrived in one piece. It seems that
with some mailers (eg Lotus 4.5) *any* formatting will screw up
the mail. (Eudoro Lite is a free download... :)

cheers,
Chris

I agree Chris except stooopid Govt IT people reckon Lotus Notes is the
"bees Knees" when it comes to administering 20 data bases with the one
program.

I told them to invent one themselves to which they replied " why dont
you!"........and I got theit point.

Nothing terribly unusual about that at this time of year (autumn/
early winter); 1040 gets topped every now and again south of
Australia, although it's rare for it to occur on land. IIRC Melbourne's
record high is in the low 1040s. I've seen 1046 on a prog, although
I don't think it materialised.

I for one do not live, or have lived or was born in Canberra or the Queanbeyan area - although I did drive through Canberra once around midnight quite a few years ago. Also I once had a very good friend who lived in Canberra

As for the teacher thing - I am not, nor ever have been, or married a teacher - however my brother, sister, her husband, another brothers wife, 2 aunts, 1 uncle, 1 grandfather 4 cousins are all teachers - do I qualify?

As for the next thread .... errrr I'm female

This is a favoured place for intense anticyclones in winter. The pressure of course is lower in NSW but in this situation (as it was in 1967) it is often accompanied by east coast lows (3 in that month). A similar event happened in June 1964 (the year the Beatles hit the country, although I hated their music at the time!) and ,one I don't remember was June 1950 when there were 5 east coast lows in the one month. With the current La Nina don't be surprised if it happens again next month. No doubt someone has done some sort of an analysis of the frequency of these systems.. Hobart reported a pressure of 30.93 inches in 1877 - which is just of 1046 hectapascals - but I am not sure whether this is accepted as the Australian record - Blair might know. For the record, the highest pressure recorded in Sydney was 1039.7 on 12 June 1930. Don White Keith Barnett wrote: > > It was over Tasmania, not NSW, and in 1967. It's inconceivable really...some lady on CNN was originally talking about an F6!! However, these reports were quickly dismissed. I have heard it did cause heavy F5 damage, but again - since it's night, no one is really quite sure yet. I was listening to NOAA radio over the net...I stopped it now because I wanted to look at AU forecast models (and real audio takes up too much bandwidth to do both) but at 5:22am, there was another tornado warning issued...at 1am, CAPE's were 3000-5000 and LI's were -8 to -10. However, these were in bad shear areas, the area's with the 1500-2000 CAPE's scored the worse, as they had the best shearing values. As I said before...it's really quite difficult to comprehend some of these events, it's truely amazing. Arkansas and Misouri as well as parts of Lousiana should get this tomorrow (their today) - lets hope it's not of the same magnitude. While we all enjoy watching this facinating phenomena take place (here and over there) we must also remember those who are directly involved. The other night I was listening to the radio and i heard this (or something like it): Someone rang an insurance company to make a claim and was put on hold two days in a row. The music playing on the first day was "rain drops keep fallin' on my head" and on the second day was "everyone's gotta get stoned". A lighter moment to come out of all the damage in Sydney! Andrew McDonald. BTW - nice bit of congestus formed out to the east of Melbourne this afternoon (4/5) but was capped pretty well. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 041 X-Sender: cmaunder at mail.dynamite.com.au X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.0 Date: Tue, 04 May 1999 23:10:22 +1000 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Chris Maunder [cmaunder at dynamite.com.au] Subject: Re: aus-wx: Canberra connection explained Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com At 20:21 4/05/99 , Don wrote: >I see most people left Canberra - that proves they're intelligent, Jimmy.
