After receiving advice from Al Moller via cell phone, Bruce
Haynie, Robert Willis, Glenn Dickson and I gave up on SW Oklahoma
and charged south toward Guthrie to intercept a storm coming out
of Dickens County (almost a carbon copy of one of last week's
chases). The Guthrie storm was the farthest south of three storms
in a short line. Tail end Charlie, apparently a tornadic LP, was
another 40 or so miles SW in Kent County (was anyone on the Kent
County storm?).

The northern two cells were being seeded, but had SW flank rain
free bases. Both produced RFD downbursts which raised large dust
plumes and perhaps, perhaps a few tornadic dust whirls. Both RFB
areas had a hellish red appearance and were full of wrapping rain
(and hail?) curtains.

We met Gene Rhoden at Guthrie. Gene had also come south from 287
but told us he had originally targeted the area east and northeast
of Lubbock.

Haze was a problem (is Chiapas burning again?). We gassed up in
Guthrie and then drove south of town to take a look at the
updraft, which was located SW of Guthrie. The storm had a SW
flank with a huge wall cloud underneath. The central part of
the wall cloud was on the deck, but the haze was bad enough to
prevent seeing any detail underneath.

As the precip area moved north of Guthrie, Gene and Bruce drove
west of Guthrie, assuming the 4 inch hail had moved north of the
highway, to get a closer look at the wall cloud. I had set up
about three or four miles south of town and was shooting the storm
structure when they made their move. After a few minutes, I
decided to follow their lead and headed back north. As I drove
north, Bruce and Gene reported the brief tornado. During most of
the weak tornado's one to two minute life, it was obscured from my
view by a ridge west of the highway. I got a few brief glimpses
of a dust whirl underneath a shallow funnel, but never saw
condensation to the ground. The storm produced several other
brief funnels.

We watched the storms go down hill just before sunset. Bruce,
Robert and I then drove east to highway 6 and then turned north to
Crowell where we intercepted two HP monsters, one just north of
town and one to our northeast near Chillocothe. We turned east
toward Vernon and experienced a tremendous lightning barrage as we
passed a few miles south of a large meso and wall cloud that was
between us and Chillicothe.

Gene stopped in Crowell to gas up. As Bruce, Robert and I
continued east, we saw a series of power flashes under the meso to
our north. Gene immediately reported a power outage in Crowell
via 146.52 MHz.

Six to eight inch diameter tree limbs littered the highway on the
western edge of Vernon. We drove through the southern edge of the
meso as we passed through Vernon and east on 287, experiencing
several miles of high winds, frothy atomized rain and
hydroplaning.

The armada grew as we all drove to Wichita Falls for a late dinner
and discussion.

We get a lot of single figure max's during June/July - but very rarely
in May!

Hey all,

Well, finally got some action here in the West of Vic last night. First thunderstorm since Feb. Wasn't much though....altough the advancing front had some good features on it. As soon as I can, I'll have them scanned and posted. Started off from Murtoa at 4:40pm and headed for Minyip which is about 30K's North. After hitting Minyip and seeing a small squall line, re-assessed the situation and decided that there was no point in going any furthur as nothing much else seemed to happen, but 3 individual rumbles of thunder were heard, so I am assuming that this is a thunder day.

Returned to Murtoa approximately 6:00pm and took some photos of Mammatus and called it a day.

Good news is that already we have castellanus overhead at 9:00am, and some TCu activity over the Grampians ranges, but I am assuming this is related to the lift coming up the side of the range helping this.

Hi all

Apparently early this morning there were some good falls on the Sunshine
Coast between 50-100mm. Some local flooding did occur. We have to wait for
the rainfall obs however.
Sunshine Coast (north of Bris) forecast:
    SUNSHINE COAST
Rain periods, heavy at times. A possible thunderstorm. Some local flooding
and
traffic disruptions. Fresh gusty SE winds.
Tewantin Maximum ... 21

Its fine and cloudy in Brisbane right now...radar shows a band of rain on
the Sunshine Coast making it as far as Caboolture and then dying off. The
rain should extend south a bit tonight. The sat pic shows some decent cloud
up near Fraser Island where thunder was reported...I need a thunderday!!!!
Anyway, we'll see.

Regards
James (about to go to work) Chambers

Hi all

I've spotted the accas (its a little bit hard to tell) on Melbourne Webcams
if anyone wants to peruse:

http://melbourne.citysearch.com.au/Melbourne/Weather/Melbourne_Web_Cam/
Just go through the list of webcams and you'll find an adequate one. Keep
watching them during the day.

Last I night I experienced one of the most interesting pieces of weather
forecasts I have ever seen for this weekend.

Channel ten had some Showers with a developing trough/Low SE QLD/NE NSW

7 had some showers with a change.

9 (Nat Jeffrey who is the best) had a trough coming across Western NSW
linking with a developing Low NE NSW bringing heavy squally rain.

ABC had fine weather forecast.

Now I realise its 48 - 72 hours away, I thought that most models are
reasonably reliable for that period of time. Seems that the media dont
think so.......or shop at different places for their weather info.

I see that the BOM are going for showers to increase on the NE NSW Coast
for Friday / Saturday. When are the media going to make weather a more
important aspect of there focus - I mean just because it doesn't bring in
revenue - it still plays a vital part in peoples lives and a better
distribution of the information can actually save lives (as the OK Tornado
outbreak proved.........). Its allright for the media to blame the BOm for
the Sydney Hailstorm BUT the media would not have passed on any warnings
that the BOM would have issued anyway!

dear oh dear oh dear. Sometimes it feels like you are banging your head on
a brickwall.

Paul,

That's exactly right. Last year the (federal?) government released that
special sound to be played on radio or TV when an important message
regarding weather/fire etc was to be broadcast. I've never heard it yet but
there have been several severe storm advices/warnings, obviously. And I've
never heard any mention of weather warnings on TV in my life, except for
those that are current for days - wind/sheep graziers warnings - and they
are only mentioned on the ABC weather. It is indeed time for the media to
get themselves into gear...

Not that long - it reached 26 on the 5th, compared with 23 yesterday.

It's starting to get late in May for a 23, though, although still some
way short of record territory - it was 26.9 on the 24th in 1994 (IIRC
this had some duststorms attached to it).

On the other hand, central Australia has been very warm - 33 at Alice
Springs yesterday equals their record for this late in autumn. There
is certainly potential for a couple of warm days further south late in
the week if skies remain reasonably clear.

We just had a thundestorm pass us here in the northern suburbs of Perth,
some nice lightning in it.

I managed to get some pics of the storm using my brothers digital camera,
didnt manage to get any lightning on camera though. 3 of the pics are
showing cloud tops next to the main storm.

Hi Paul, Andrew, and others,

Can relate to what you say.

Currently have a (prediction sceptical) tourist industry buff on my back
about warnings - he's into taking visitors out on boats, and he sent the
following the other day -

COPY
Ahoy!
Anything happening?
Thought you might like this.
Cheers, Cap'n Dan

Prediction: no blame
Have you ever thought about taking the weather forecasters or weather
boffins to court when the say, for instance, that we will have ten cyclones
this season and we don't, but it adversely affects our business.
A US judge has ruled that weather forecasts are predictions and broadcasters
should not be blamed if they are wrong. The judge dismissed a $US10 million
(A$15,8 million) lawsuit filed by relatives of a Florida fisherman who died
in a storm.
END COPY

The local beef is of course caused by irresponsible southern media reporting
(file footage etc of cyclones, tales of destruction when the cyclone is 1000
km away) of what SHOULD be a warning only, so the public have time to
prepare.

There is no doubt that local tourism businesses get thousands of
cancellations when these "reports" are aired - this is a perennial problem,
and their concern is real$$$$. On the basis of these "reports", my parents
ring me from Brisbane "to see if we're all right" - which is nice, but the
cyclone is 200 km off Cape Melville not Proserpine!

We of course have the warning system in use up here, and I've seen the
reaction of visitors/newcomers when they hear it -PANIC. I guess I can
understand the reason BoM are reluctant to use the same down south.

If the general public were better informed on interpreting weather data, and
interpreting the press rubbish, perhaps all would be better.

Bill - Proserpine

Just seen footage on a news update of a street in the southern suburb of
Westfield near Kelmscott, trees on the ground, many homes damaged with
roofs lost, and 1 home was almost totally destroyed. Channel 7 said it was
a "mini tornado", so we'll have to wait and see for more damage reports to
see if it was a tornado or not.

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

That light rain has increased to light/borderline moderate.. but fairly
steady at the moment, the rain band approaching from the N/NE is VERY
slow moving, and i think we can expect some heavy falls tonight, mainly
north of Brisbane as BOM is predciting..

It's been raining on the Sunshine coast since late last night (more like
constant rain in the last 8-9 hours) with plenty of moderate falls
around the 60mm mark close to the coast, and some heavy ones including
over 100mm at Rainbow Beach and Double Island point - right on the
coast.

At the moment there are 33 roads cut in the Maroochydore shire, wich is
like 1/4 of the SE coast district.. i can't get through to my normal
information source at the moment, but i think their would be a few more
roads cut in other districts as well.. They are also sandbagging in
places as well, as the Maroochy River was very close to breaking its
banks in todays high tide, and could possibly break its banks in
tonights high tide sometime around Midnight i think.. At the moment the
flood situation isn't major by any means, and i think their will have to
be allot more rain, and in a more intense fashion for the major rivers
to cause problems, but it certainly has the potential there if their are
any heavy falls overnight..

I've pasted the info from our Weather summary below..

RAINFALL SUMMARY
In the 24 hours to 0900 Wednesday, there was widespread rain in SE Qld,
particularly about the Sunshine Coast. Totals included Yandina 107mm,
Palmwoods
88mm, Landsborough 77mm, Eumundi 66mm, and Maroochydore and Baroon
Pocket Dam
64mm. Brisbane Airport recorded only 5mm. Elsewhere, only scattered to
isolated
showers were reported from the Tropical Coast, for example Lockhart
River 11mm,
Babinda 8mm, and Crystal Brook on the Central Coast 10mm.

During Wednesday, the trend was similar, with falls in the 6 hours to
1500
about the Sunshine Coast of 106mm at Double Island Point, 93mm at
Rainbow Beach,
74mm at Tewantin, 55mm at Maroochydore. Falls about the remaining
southern
coasts and adjacent inland were lighter, and only isolated light showers
occurred near the tropical coast.

Very boring, the only thing of interest in the next 1 to 2 days could be
photo chemical smog.

There is a very outside chance of this high slipping away south a bit and
letting the showers along the north coast move southwards. ( as if they have
not had enough ! ), but it is unlikely.

A bit scary here Lindsay. I presume that the graphic driver file in Windows
Setup was not changed in any way ?

If not then there can only be a few places the rogue problem can come from,
check your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS for any new lines, especially related
to graphics. If either of these files has a date the same as you installed
Photoworks you are on a winner. The Windows startup group is probably too
obvious and I bet you have checked that. Look also in WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI
for any graphic drivers, usually any funny drivers may be found in the first
few lines of either, again the date of these files may be a pointer. If you
suspect a culprit backup your present file with a .OLD extension ( or like )
and remove the suspect line and save as the new .INI file and restart
windows.

I was doing a little roaming around the sites this morning and noticed a pic
of the Sandon Tornado at

http://www.bom.gov.au/weather/nsw/inside/sevwx/public/handbook/spotter5.shtm
l

The BOM article goes on to describe the large ' prong ' attached to the wall
cloud. It just so happens I had the latest storm news on the desk and Matt's
pic from the 30th January 1999 chase was on the front page, the black and
white storm news pic is so similar to the Sandon one, I am now sure that a
tornado was mixed in there, if only briefly. The colour version is at , but
I suggest comparing the B/W storm news version to the Sandon pic.

http://www.braenet.com.au/~disarm/30-01-99-05.jpg

...and just to plug my own site, another cloud 'prong ' as BOM calls them at

http://thunder.simplenet.com/chase/chase13.htm

which is the Sydney Hailstorm forming,

Something to think about !!

Tech Support: "OK Bob, let's press the control and escape keys at the same time.
That brings up a task list in the middle of the screen. Now type the letter 'P'
to bring up the Program Manager."
 Customer: "I don't have a 'P'."
Tech Support: "On your keyboard, Bob."
 Customer: "What do you mean?"
Tech Support: "'P' on your keyboard, Bob."
Customer: "I'm not going to do that!"

 Overheard in a computer shop:

Customer: "I'd like a mouse mat, please."
Salesperson: "Certainly sir, we've got a large variety."
Customer: "But will they be compatible with my computer?"

 **********

I once received a fax with a note on the bottom to fax the document back
to the sender when I was finished with it, because he needed to keep it.

 **********

Customer in computer shop: "Can you copy the Internet onto this disk for me?"

 **********

Customer: "So that'll get me connected to the Internet, right?"
 Tech Support: "Yeah."
Customer: "And that's the latest version of the Internet, right?"
 Tech Support: "Uhh...uh...uh...yeah."

 **********

Tech Support: "All right...now double-click on the File Manager icon."
 Customer:"That's why I hate this Windows - because of the icons - I'm a
Protestant, and I don't believe in icons."
Tech Support: "Well, that's just an industry term sir. I don't believe it was meant to-"
Customer: "I don't care about any 'Industry Terms'. I don't believe in icons."
Tech Support: "Well...why don't you click on the 'little picture' of a filing
 cabinet...is 'little picture' OK?"
 Customer: {click}

 **********

 Customer: "My computer crashed!"
 Tech Support: "It crashed?"
Customer: "Yeah, it won't let me play my game."
Tech Support: "All right, hit Control-Alt-Delete to reboot."
Customer: "No, it didn't crash-it crashed."
 Tech Support: "Huh?"
Customer: "I crashed my game. That's what I said before. I crashed my spaceship and now it doesn't work."
Tech Support: "Click on 'File,' then 'New Game.'"
Customer: {pause} "Wow! How'd you learn how to do that?"

 **********

I had been doing Tech Support for Hewlett-Packard's DeskJet division for
about a month when I had a customer call with a problem I just couldn't solve.
She could not print yellow. All the other colours would print fine,
which truly baffled me because the only true colours are cyan, magenta,
and yellow. For instance, green is a combination of cyan and yellow, but green printed fine.
Every colour of the rainbow printed fine except for yellow. I had the
customer change ink cartridges. I had the customer delete and reinstall the drivers.
Nothing worked. I asked my co-workers for help; they offered no new ideas.
After over two hours of troubleshooting, I was about to tell the
customer to send the printer in to us for repair when she asked quietly,
"Should I try printing on a piece of white paper instead of this yellow paper?"

 **********

A man attempting to set up his new printer called the printer's tech
support number, complaining about the error message: "Can't find the printer."
On the phone, the man said he even held the printer up in front of the screen,
but the computer still couldn't find it.

 **********

And another user was all confused about why the cursor always moved in
the opposite direction from the movement of the mouse. She also
complained that the buttons were difficult to depress. She was very
embarrassed when we asked her to rotate the mouse so the tail pointed away from her.

An unfailingly polite lady called to ask for help with a Windows installation
 that had gone terribly wrong.

Customer: "I brought my Windows disks from work to install them on my home computer."
Training stresses that we are "not the Software Police," so I let the little act of piracy slide.
 Tech Support: "Umm-hmm. What happened?"
Customer: "As I put each disk in it turns out they weren't initialized."
Tech Support: "Do you remember the message exactly, ma'am?"
Customer: (proudly) "I wrote it down. 'This is not a Macintosh disk. Would you like to initialize it?'"
Tech Support: "Er, what happened next?"
Customer: "After they were initialized, all the disks appeared to be blank. And
now I brought them back to work, and I can't read them in the A: drive; the PC
wants to format them. And this is our only set of Windows disks for the whole
office. Did I do something wrong?"

 *********

This guy calls in to complain that he gets an "Access Denied" message
every time he logs in. It turned out he was typing his username and password in capital letters.
Tech Support: "Ok, let's try once more, but use lower case letters."
Customer:"Uh, I only have capital letters on my keyboard."

 Email from a friend: "CanYouFixTheSpaceBarOnMyKeyboard?"

 **********

My friend was on duty in the main lab on a quiet afternoon. He noticed a young
woman sitting in front of one of the workstations with her arms crossed across
her chest, staring at the screen. After about 15 minutes he noticed that she
was still in the same position, only now she was impatiently tapping her foot.
He asked if she needed help and she replied "It's about time! I pressed the F1
 button over twenty minutes ago!"

 ***********************

After experiencing difficulties with his computer, a poor, incognizant user
called the system maker's technical support line for assistance...

Technician: Hello. How can I help you today?

Customer: There's smoke coming from the power supply on my computer...

Technician: Looks like you need a new power supply...

Customer: No, I don't! I just need to change the startup files...

Technician: Sir, what you described is a faulty power supply. You need to replace it...

Customer: No way! Someone told me that I just had to change the system startup files to fix the problem! All I need is for you to tell me the right command...

For the next ten minutes, in spite of the technician's efforts to explain the problem and its solution, the customer adamantly insisted that he was right.

So, in frustration, the technician responded...

Technician: I'm sorry. We don't normally tell our customers this, but
there's an undocumented DOS command that will fix the problem...

 Customer: I knew it!

Technician: Just add the line "LOAD NOSMOKE.COM" at the end of the CONFIG.SYS file and everything should work fine. Let me know how it goes...

About ten minutes later, the technician received a call back from the
 customer...

Customer: It didn't work. The power supply is still smoking...

Technician: Well, what version of DOS are you using?

 Customer: MS-DOS 6.22...
Technician: Well, that's your problem. That version of DOS doesn't include NOSMOKE. You'll need to contact Microsoft and ask them for a patch. Let me know how it all works out...

When nearly an hour had passed, the phone rang again...

Customer: I need a new power supply...

Technician: How did you come to that conclusion?

Customer: Well, I called Microsoft and told the technician what you said, and he started asking me questions about the make of the power supply...

 Technician:What did he tell you?

Customer: He said my power supply isn't compatible with NOSMOKE...

Pardon me for being a grump, but why is it that when ever witnesses
describe the effects of a storm as tornadic, the media immediatly adopts
the term "mini tornado"? A tornado is a tornado damn it, and I don't recall
Dr Fujita including a "mini" rating in his scale!!

Yep, must be the "ooh, we don't have real tornadoes in Australia" thing
coming up again and again. Aren't the media supposed to be well informed?

OK, enough digs at the media for me today...

Andrew.
