Thank you everyone.... another misconception bites the dust.

For the record, the UK's lowest recorded temperature was at Braemar in the
Scottish Highlands at -27.2c in January 1982 and the warmest was 37.1c at
Cheltenham, Gloucester, in August 1990 but these are quite extreme as the UK
has a maritime climate (warm Atlantic affected by the Gulf Stream) never too
warm and never too cold [for us Brits, anyway (: ] By British standards 10c is
mild and 25c is hot! Summertimes in the UK can have temperatures as low as 12c
in a northerly airstream and some of the more northern islands struggle to get
beyond 12 or 13c all year!

If you take a look at the activity just north of Cape York, you will find
some activity which is unusual for this time of year. New Guinea has some
storm scattered on its southern part. Very interesting.

At least 20mm from heavy showers in the north west cloudband. The front
passed early this morning with a few distant rumbles (I was not going to
get out of my bed!). At 8.30am central time we have fast moving stratocu
coming from the west with the occasional sunlit big cu visible in the
breaks. Forecast has winds swinging to the SW as we get into the cold
stuff with thunder and small hail. I make it 8degrees at present.

Maybe soon I'll get my chance to snap those cold air anvils! Look out
Victoria!

I think our mid-summer maximum average was only around 20 or so. We had
numerous days between 13-16 in summer because of all the rain.

We got 0.5 here in Blackheath on Saturday morning. About normal for
here.
Light frost. I call them metal frosts, as corrugated roofs and cars get
plenty of ice but not the heavy frosts on the ground we get regularly in
July/August. I think I recorded our first frost this year on the 29th of
March, only very light though as it was 3.5 degrees.

Hi all!
Tomorrow I am planning to take my wife/kids to Mt Macedon for some "snow
chasing". How do radar echoes look for snow: like heavy showers? If I
get some good cloud pics, I,ll post them on this list.
Cheers Peter

Peter,

You're right, snow looks like very heavy rain on radar because of the
intensity of the echoes. We're looking forward to some good falls on the
Southern/Central Tablelands of NSW, looks like I picked the right week
not to be going back to Wollongong until Tuesday night. Usually my luck
wouldn't allow for that!!

LOOKING GOOD!

Andrew.

G'day from Glenda.
Very interesting reading the comments on aussie weather. May I ask if
anyone has access to equipment able to record fluctuations in the earths
electric and magnetic fields. These are in a state of constant change and
it's possible that our weather patterns are linked here somehow. Any
comments on this? fyi several (ground) springs in rural areas of mid S.A.
opened up and began flowing again several weeks ago prior to rains. Why?
And what caused it? Interesting subject.

We just had a little hail-storm up here at Waite, Adelaide. The buildings still
have a little hail piled up in the gutters like snow. It came on suddenly, with
strong gusty wind and large rain drops. The stones were small (2mm or so) and
mostly washed away without collecting.

I don't know much theory, but I noticed that the 850hPa temperature over
Adelaide was expected to be 0 by sometime Sunday. I'd guess this has something
to do with the hail I've just obsereved.

Jason, the 850Hpa temp for Adelaide this morning (about 10am) was 0c
I also noticed the 3pm radar loop shows red regions (high reflectivity)
pretty much right over Adelaide, most likely corresponding to the hailstorm
you reported.

Some mammatocumulus passing across here from the Blue Mountains at
present but knowing Sydney there won't be a thunderstorm in these
northwesterlies.
Only 11 deg here at 11 am today but it's struggled up to 16 and now
dropping again.
The barometer has fallen 13 millibars in 8 hours and is now more or less
stationary.
I guess there's been some hail and thunder in the Blue Mts.?

High Jimmy here,

3:12pm and the light rain drops are falling here Schofields. I noticed
about half hour to one hour ago, the radar was picking up virga perhaps
light shower near and off Sydney.. this was under the altocumulus
castellanus band. A shower and more rain is approaching from the NW. The
soundings have the air very dry in the lower layers as well hence the
virga....and snow is falling...

I think any rain will fall mainly near the mountains well west of
Blacktown although there have been a few spots here about 5mm diameter,
as there were earlier from those virga formations.I have a good view of
the mountains in places and under any other synoptic it would look like
rain might set in but the air is too dry for anything of substance.
Sunny tomorrow, and very windy. There should be a 'good' wind chill
factor and I wouldn't be surprised to see the dewpoint go down below
zero.Presently here it's 14.5 dry bulb and dewpoint 8..going up due to
some very light rain that's just begun while I was in the middle of
typing this..

Hi Jimmy here

Had a call from Jane on the way back from the mtns to the NE of Melbourne

Snow to 1250m on Mt Donna Buang NE of Melbourne and occasional snow flakes
to 900m before actual cold air has moved through. It will be interesting
to see what happens as the change actually does get through and the
asociated cold air.

Wet overnight and all today in the city, but really pissing down from
about mid-afternoon. OK not flooding stuff, but more than we've been used
to getting in recent months. Cold too - only about 7 degrees C at present.
Snowing on the back country, which is good news for the ski-fields.

It looks interesting over in Oz. That cut-off low and cold outbreak looks
suspiciously like a situation which I heard happened in June 1981, when
rare snow fell in parts of SA and Victoria. Interestingly Tasmania looks
like it's escaping much of the cold and snow. After this cold air leaves
Oz, NZ looks as if it's going to get a taste. Not according to MetService,
though - they just speak of a couple of brief cold southerly changes and
showers. However, I've just been on the phone to the Head of Blue Skies
Weather (an alternative forecasting agency, based in Christchurch), and he
predicts the cold outbreak to possibly be the most extreme for 50 years!.

Jimmy -- I'll be posting as the first flake hits, though if you wait
til then, of course, there's always the possibility of blocked roads
;_]` In this sort of situation, the snow tends to be heaviest S and
SW of Oberon, but we shall see.

3.7 degrees at Blackheath at 1800 and falling steadily with a 10/15
knot WNW wind. Max today 9.1. 1.4mm in light rain from quite an
ominous-looking band of AcAs that passed across 1600 to 1700. Some
nicely glaciated medium-sized Cu to the east at that time.

Don't forget that the noteworthy weather obs at
http://www.ozemail.com.au/~wbc/ will show any observer reports of snow
-- see relevant codes below. And you can infer from any AWS obs that
if the temp is less than 2 degrees and there's precip reported, that
it's likely to be falling as snow. Both the synoptic and AWS obs
reports are updated hourly about 20 past the hour, though, of course,
the more detailed synoptic reports only come in 3-hourly. Anyone
thinking of heading for the Blue Mountains should look for Katoomba's
obs at 3am and 6am (unless the observer decides to stay in bed), and
Mount Boyce AWS.

For observer reports of snow, you need to know the codes for present
and past weather which are shown on the right side of the noteworthy
synoptic reports page. The full information is at
http://www.weather.org.uk/resource/wwcode.htm, but for snow you're
looking for:

Present weather:

71 Continuous fall of snowflakes } of observation

In the past weather column, 7=snow.

Also nice to look at are the three-hourly visible light satpix from
Dundee University at http://www.sat.dundee.ac.uk/pdus/JV/ -- they show
whole globe, but are large and clear enough to give excellent
representation of the cold air field which, on the 06z image this
afternoon, extended from the central Bight into Central Western NSW
and down to about 55 south. These images, and the IR ones at
http://www.sat.dundee.ac.uk/pdus/JI/ are extraordinarily reliable, and
there's a one-month archive!

Oops. Sorry, Jimmy. Didn't mean to attribute that to you, just fumbled

Hi All

With Andrew Wall, currently camping at Barmera here in Sth Aust, somewhere
between Waikerie and Loxton, I decided to post up the happening with the
Adelaide Weather. Most off you already know with the postings earlier on
today.

At 4am this morning, Cherelyn (Andrew's sister) woke to very loud rain
pounding the bedroom window in which she was sleeping, she soon woke me up
and we sat around to listen to distant thunder. At 4.10am came a longer
rumble followed by CG lightning and with thunder approx 2 secs afterwards
at 4.12am another CG was observed 10 mins later and the thunder that
followed was about 30 secs after it.

Andrew rain gauge that he set up just before he left to go camping on
Saturday night saw 21.5mm in it at 10am, and now 24hrs later off it being
set up has just over 23mm.

We finally had small hail probably just less than 2mm in diameter in the
North Eastern Suburbs, at approx 5.20pm this evening, with 2 flashes of
lightning and one rumble of thunder just prior to that.

Max temp for today was about 10.3

Hi Jimmy here,

The cloud band has raced off the coast but I have observed some flickering
of lightning well off the coast. I would say the storms are well off the
coast as the flashes are only reflections off particles in the atmosphere I
would say..

9:47 pm Sunday night.

Snowing at Blackheath, (alt = 1100m) just had a heavier flurry as I
stuck my head out the door. Flakes falling in the door now. Very
borderline temperature = 2.2 degrees and slowly falling. Another flurry,
ah bewdiful!

Snow is way too wet to settle. Is mixed with with rain. When the wind
strengthens, it snows a bit more.

My computer is only six feet from an open door, I can see flakes from
here. It's about five degrees in this room.

Stay tune for more.

Repeat, way too wet for Sydney siders to come up and see it on the
ground. Is melting as soon as it falls. Need another degree or two yet.
Could be good by morning.

Lindsay.

I was in the Corin Forest area (alt approx 1200m) just south of
Canberra this afternoon around 4.00pm. Wet snow was falling but
not sticking.

The temp in Canberra has been around 4 or 5 since the rain
started this afternoon so there should be some nice white
views on the higher ranges when visibility improves.

I am tempted to try some X-C skiing tomorrow depending on what may
fall tonight. Precipitation amounts don't seem to be that high
in the mountains so far and I have only received 4mm at Higgins
to 10.00pm. So it may be a little while yet before skiing is a
possibility (other than on the main range which I anticipate to
be somewhat antarctic tomorrow and I'm not that keen!!).

Patrick

Hi all,

I was reading something interesting last night, in regards to
supercellular movement. It's for the "double vortex" structure - one
with a "dual rotation," one vortex rotates clockwise, the other
anti-clockwise. It's for the US - but you could reverse the order in
what they say....and when you do, you get that if the clockwise rotation
is stronger, it induces thunderstorm movement to the left, and if the
anticlockwise rotation is stronger, it induces thunderstorm movement to
the right. This is for a westerly jetstream. The clockwise rotation is
your updraft, anti-clockwise is your downdraft.

One interesting observation that always seems to be made with
supercells, is they move in a direction different then that to other
thunderstorms in the area. I was thinking that, in order for a
supercell to sustain itself, the updrafts would have to be equal to, or
greater than the downdrafts in order to sustain itself. So, if the
cyclonic updraft were stronger then the anti-cyclonic downdraft, then it
would indicate thunderstorm movement slightly to the left. Now - a lot
of storms in SE QLD/NE NSW move SW to NE, supercells tend to move NNE to
N'ly (and can sometimes propogate slightly W) - this is in line with the
explanation of the movement of supercells. The Sydney supercell also
took a NNE path, instead of a NE'ly path - another example.

I'd be interested to see if anyone had any thoughts on this?

Anthony Cornelius

This often happens at this time of year with the first west wind changes,
after a couple of hundred kilometres of ocean the wind pick up quite a bit
of moisture and more importantly heat again, so convection really fires. I
have seen almost non-stop lightning from Cu over the ocean during a west
wind.

As for snow chasing tomorrow, I doubt I can do the Bells Line, but will go
towards Goulburn / Taralga of anything looks tempting, I think Tuesday early
AM may be a better bet, it just is not cold enough yet in Wollongong and I
can't see it cold enough by tomorrow, hope I am wrong.
