hey guys,
i have just started my recording of rainfall as of 1st of july, so i can at
least get the last half of this year. and for me the best timer for me to
recorded daily rainfall is when it should be to get a true daily rainfall
data. obviously ppl wouldn't like to stay up or get up to record it at
midnight, but for me it is the best solution cos i am always up at this
time every single night. and also cos i couldn't be bothered getting up at
9 a.m!!

No, Kevin, I'd stick with the BoM standard of 9am (if you can do it at
that time), simply so that you can compare your readings with those
around you. A second best choice, if you have to get off to work
before 9 would be a time in the early morning when you can reliably
read the gauge daily every day -- like 7.30 or 8am. That way it's
comparable with Bureau readings most times. A third choice is 9pm,
which gives you the ability to compare with the more scattered network
of synoptic stations that report at that time. The most important
thing is regularity -- the same time every day -- and remembering to
do it even when you think there's been no rain!

Hi all,

In the recent posts about Rain Guages etc... I have but one query, I have a
friend who makes his own rain gauge which has a 0.1mm accuracy, with the
addapton of a more acurate reading of say 0.05mm. He has tested his guage
with the BoM's readings and his are spot on to what they say. Could this
guage be used for a measurement of rain??? Would the BoM need to see the
design before accepting the designs readings???

Just a query, cos I am thinking of getting one....

Hello Everyone,

Firstly thanks to those of you who answered our query on the Ice Detectors on the road near Lithgow. Shortly after posting that query we had terminal problems with the computer. Now fixed and raring to go again!!!!! We lost all the unread e-mails for about 2 weeks, the computer doctor couldn't save the information from the old hard drive.

Have just found a great site with thousands of images taken from the space shuttle missions. There are some very interesting shots from space of all things pertaining to the weather. Look it up and see what you all think, you will find it at -

Hi Everyone,

This morning in Sydney it is very foggy indeed. The airport has been closed
and on my way to work there was thick fog all the way from the base of the
mtns to the city itself. At the moment (9:30 a.m.) it is still very foggy
here in the city. I can hardly see the building next to me. I am on the 23rd
floor of a building and it is a strange sensation looking out the window and
seeing a wall of white.

Hi all

Its been a wet year so far for my place in southern Brisbane. I have to say
the rainfall over the Qld Sunshine Coast this year would be so much more
than Brisbane and Ballina.

My obs (southern Brisbane)
January: 122.6
February: 238.0
March 118.6
April 55.5
May 86.5
June 194.5

Total for the first 6 months of the last year of 1999: 815.7mm. Of course
its nowhere near a record, but its way above average.

Yes, Michael Bath and I are dealing with this mob. Please be careful of the
price they pay for footage. We asked and got $10/sec of footage. Just
weight out your options.

We had a real heavy moist fog this morning. Visibility at times was no more
than 20metres. The road was saturated. We got 0.4mm of fog again although
there was a trace of rain from the last night... It was that thick that you
had to have the wipers on as the fog acted like fine drizzle on the
windscreen.

I guess the English must have been sick of their winter weather. So what

Another example of how different Illawarra and Sydney micro climates are,
here on the coastal Illawarra there was heavy dew but not a hint of fog, but
you could see the fog spilling out of any small gap in the escarpment ( a
bit like watching CO2 gas spill out of glass with a dry ice cube in it ).

Although there was fog here yesterday, there was no fog at all this
morning. Altitude would be the reason for this, I am at 170m above sea
level. The fog was low lying.

We had fog both days here in Schofields. Our altitude is at 60m although
the thickness of this morning was much more than yesterday morning.
However, I do understand that during the night, some of the fogs are
incredibly thick and often it occurs as you approach the Schofields to
Richmond area.

I do recall speaking to Robert Hyde a few years back and he studies the
flow of wind and has done studies of the flow of wind within Sydney. He
suggested that typically the air will circulate in the basin during the
night and sink in the northwestern areas of Sydney. Quite interesting and
it probably explains the lower temperatures and the amount of fogs
experienced in this region.

The cloud band at the moment 7 - 8pm 30/6/99 has indicated a start of
circulatiojn in NSW and is a match with the synoptic chart. The top section
of the cold front has become detatched from the main low and leaning
slightly NNE SSW. This indicates the development of a low. I know I made an
incorrect forecast of the NCoast stuff developing into a possible low
(which I noticed when I saw the direction of the jet and the location of
the maxima of the jet), I think this is the start of a low development.

There's certainly not much going on west of Sydney at the moment..unless
some of that stuff near Narrabri develops and moves down in the upper
air stream..

Jimmy, and all,

Your observations seem to be correct (See Flood Advice below). The 00UTC
prognosis shows the low going right over sydney tomorrow, nice if it
deepened a bit!

IDW42V06

BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY
VICTORIAN REGIONAL OFFICE

Flood Advice for North East Victoria
[Upper Murray, Mitta Mitta, Kiewa, Ovens, King, Broken basins]
Issued at 4:23pm on Wednesday the 30th of June 1999

A low pressure in the upper atmosphere is moving across southern New South
Wales
and is producing rain in northern Victoria. Totals to 3pm have been of the
order
of 10 mm, however rain is expected to become widespread through
northeastern
Victoria overnight with some falls in excess of 50 mm possible. The rain
band
should clear Victoria mid-morning Thursday.

Due to this rain significant stream rises can be expected in North East
Victoria
overnight with some minor flooding possible.

The Bureau is continuing to monitor the situation and will issue specific
flood
warnings as required.

Hi Everyone,

Id like to thank all those people who replied to my e-mail regarding the
availability of the Davis Weather Monitor II within Australia. I will get in
contact with Solar Flair in Victoria to see what their current prices are.
By the way Australian Geographic is quoting the price of the Weather Monitor
II as $895 and the Weatherlink Software as $295.

The BoM publishes drought index data by subscription, I think..I haven't
seen it at all in its website search option. The figures for Bega and
Narooma could be quite different to mine as I think both towns had flood
rain earlier in the year..or at least enough to wipe out their index a
few times over.
I'm really surprised we had the dry June we have had..only 30mm although
that's only the 14th driest in 50 years so things could be worse!
You might find some reference to the drought index in the drought
section of the Long Paddock home page:
http://www.dnr.qld.gov.au/longpdk/longpdk.html
You'll have to chop down or lop those trees that you have mentioned
previously ,Michael, so you can take some weather readings..!

Hi all,

In regards to Davis Instruments - I possess one myself (the $495 one) I
need to say though that I've heard a lot of negative comments about them
from the US.

In fact, I was strongly recommended by a few people to go with "Peet
Brothers" - however they are more expensive (although now that the
dollar is a little higher, the effects may not be felt as much). The
main thing that I heard about being wrong with Davis instruments, is
that apparently on anneometers, the cups are way to small.

I have never delt with Peet Brothers, so I have no idea what they're
like, but if you're interested, the URL is:

My long term ambition is to move to the country with 1-5 acres of land.
Those same trees also do a great job of sucking up the mositure and killing
what little lawn I have.

You are correct about the heavy rain down the south coast earlier in the
year, a few records tumbled back in January, but every month since has been
below average.

The Bureau is tipping a low to develop just off the Hunter coast early
tomorrow. Already, radar is indicating showers and possible thunderstorms
to the NW of Sydney.

The EIS on the impact of an airport at Badgery's Creek was released today,
I think. I have not seen it but I think it gives permission for the
proposed airport to proceed. At tonight's AMOS meeting it was only
mentioned briefly and it was emphasised that it is now a political
decision as to whether it goes ahead. However, it was interesting to note
that the frequency of micro-bursts in the western Sydney region was
mentinoed being higher than in coastal areas. I had been thinking along
exactly the same lines having read so many reports on severe storms in the
Sydney region but was surprised when someone else mentioned it. I wonder
if it was considered in the EIS especially considering the frequency of
thunderstorms in Sydney?
