I'm also keen to get involved. Luckily, in South Australia, that won't
involve an enourmous amount of work. ;)

Not content with their wind speeds yesterday, ABC Online is now
carrying a report attributing a death in Cartagena, Colombia, to
Hurricane Bret.

This is quite an impressive effort, given that the closest Bret
got to Cartagena was about 2000 kilometres. Somehow, I suspect that
a separate area of storms (visible on the satellite picture) might
have had something to do with it...

Hey All,

Sorry if someone else has already posted something similar to the list, but
just looking out the window at Nth Sydney to the West there are 3 very nice
looking Cells over the mountains. And with the Sun setting in the background
they make a very nice sight.
One just E of Katoomba has a bit of pink on the radar at around 5:20pm.
Looking at the Anvils though they seem to be facing the S - SW .

Later, James H

I was watching these all the way home from the city this afternoon but
the sun was pretty glary so I couldn't observe any lightning.
These storms appear to be almost stationary..I have a good view of the
southernmost one from my place but haven't observed any lightning
despite the pink colour on radar. Anyone else see any lightning? (For
the purpose of my database I'm going to assume it occurred).

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know of anyone who either makes or can get hold of cheap
filters for cameras???

I own a Pentax MZ-20 with a Sigma 28-70mm 1:2.8-4 Lens on the front. The
filter I am after is a UV filter which I think might help bring out more
detail in cloud pictures etc... I heard someone on the list can make them
cheap, but for the life of me I cannot remember who. Also anyone know of
some cheap places to get an electronic cable release to suit this camera
aswell??

Also Does anyone have any information on this camera as I cannot seem to
get hold of instructions for it.

Oh BTW onto weather, We are expecting the first of our Spring/summer storms
to hit the Adelaide Metro area between the 16th and 20th of September, lets
hope its a good one like last years event on the 22nd..:)

Really any help appreciated.
Thanks

A short-lived, but savage southwesterly change blasted Christchurch and
surrounds last Sunday (23rd) afternoon. In the city the squall brought a
brief period of gales, thunder, hail (a few stones up to pea size), and
even a mini-tornado which did some minor property damage. Eyewitnesses also
reported water-spouts out to sea. The temperature quickly dropped from 12C
to 4C. Similar weather lashed Banks Peninsula, but that area also had snow
to low-levels, which stranded several cars on the main highway. (about 450
metres asl)

This was the second wintry outbreak in the space of a week - the first one
(Tuesday 17th) saw light snow fall to about 200 - 300 metres, plus hail and
sleet to the lower levels. By contrast, today is fine in Christchurch, with
the temperature reaching 19C after a morning frost. Four seasons in one
week.

Thunder here at 6:20pm. Looked out the back window and saw CC light up
the sky. Its sort of coming from the NW direction, those with radar will
know more.

Looks to be heading towards Sydney.

Keith, strikes are every 3 minutes sometimes longer.. very scattered... if
you blink you will miss it. Ive seen about 20 stikes lighting up the storm
from Ashfield Plaza carpark.. not worth any photos that far away from them
though.
Maybe Jimmy, Dan or Matt Piper who live closer comment more?

Hi Everyone,

At long last I have finally heard thunder again. A whole two rumbles in fact
which is better than nothing. Saw some nice CC lightning as well. A couple
of spits of rain here at Blaxland during the past few hours which looks like
all were going to get from them. On the way home from work I noticed the
storms over the mtns and thought am I dreaming or is there really storms
over my way.

Anyway its good to have finally broken the storm drought here. Lets hope
this heralds the start of a fantastic season.

OK, That's Tim (Hunter Valley), Phil (SA), Don (Sydney) and I (Blue
Mtns) -- anyone from Victoria? Tasmania? (Do we have any ASWA members
or list participants from Tassie?

I wrote an article on snow for the long-gone NSW Met Society journal
many years ago which detailed snowfalls by season and locality. It
would make a useful starting point. I could put it up on my web site
when I either scan it or type it up. It would then be possible to
progressively expand it as fresh information was dug up. This would at
least provide an initial database of snowfall in Australia,
concentrating more on snowfall away from the Alps. Is this the sort of
thing you had in mind, Tim?

There was some excellent floccus above Sydney around 10am this morning
as I drove in from the Mountains. Made me wonder about the totally
storm-free forecast I was listening to on the radio...

A couple of updates.

The Bureau has indicated that a draft Basic Product Set document will
be issued very shortly, with an intended implementation date late
October. For those not in the know, the BPS will determine what data
(including radar and derived products like forecast charts) will be
freely available (mostly on the web) and what will be charged for at
cost-recovery rates. When I know what the secondary distribution
policies finally are, I hope to make more real-time data available on
my web site. Senator Hill, in the last budget, indicated that
additional funds were being given to the Bureau to expand its range of
free products, with radar and country users being given priority.

For those interested in even more esoteric details, the Bureau will,
from 1 September, change its international exchange data bulletins to
provide main and intermediate hour synoptic bulletins for about 120
stations in Australia. What that means is that those first-order
stations will report throughout the year at 00, 03, 06... 21 UTC, i.e.
10am, 1pm... EST, and 11am, 2pm... EDST. These stations will continue
to report at the usual 9am, 12 noon... clock time as well, while all
the other second level stations will continue as before.

This is a major change for the Bureau. Virtually every country in the
world reports at the standard hours of 00, 03.. UTC, the only
exceptions being Australia, NZ during daylight saving, and some
Pacific Islands. Our non-standard hours, and the partial one-hour
shift during daylight saving time, give problems in both synoptic
meteorology and climatology, so the change is in some ways a welcome
one. Cynics might say, however, that it is a shrewd political move to
maintain the 9am status quo: by fulfillling international obligations
with a minimal network of stations, the issues surrounding total
standardisation can be allowed to languish a while longer ;-).

It will be interesting to see whether changes are to be made in the
Bureau's upper air program when daylight saving starts. Upper air
balloon flights normally are made at 22z during DST, even though they
are "nominally" labelled as 00z, an important consideration for storm
chasers. It means the Skew T and other diagrams you get from Wyoming
Uni are not quite as up-to-date as indicated, because, whilst the data
is collected an hour earlier, it is still distributed globally at the
normal time.

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

I can't believe i missed this system that effected NSW today.. I noticed
some very isolated weak and short lived showers/possible storms in NNE
victoria yesterday afternoon.. and again early thismorning.. and sure
enough isolated showers and storms devloped from NE VIC right up to
cetntral NE NSW this afternoon..

I believe they were caused by an upper level trough which was over VIC
this morning (and caused the showers/possible storms there this
morning), and has since moved NE to be over central and southern NSW as
i write this email.. Looks like the trough will move slightly further NE
overnight before it weakens and slips ESE tomorrow (well offshore)..

On a slightly different note.. fairly showery in parts of Brisbane
today.. with coastal shower type Cb drifting onto the coast at various
times throughout the day (mostly in the morning where i was) dumping
some quite heavy showers here and there.. I got 18mm here overnight and
today, with most of that falling during the early hours of this
morning.. some nice coastal/Maritime Cb (if there is such a thing!)
visible this afternoon as the cloud broke up where i was.. nothing
spectacular by any means.. but nice to look at..

Hi ppls,

Well I finally got a look at some C-G lightning, after a very long dry
spell. A small single cell moved into the northern suburbs of Adelaide
tonight from the NW, producing about 4 cg's before moving off to the SE,
even though this storm was small it was quite impressive considering I have
not seen a decent storm in months.

Elizabeth which is about 5k's N of us had 0.4mm of rain since 9am, 0.2mm of
that came out of this small cell.

Doesnt look as though we will get anymore tonight, but I will be keeping
one ear open tonight.

Temp at 9:45pm local was 20.6 C
Wind is getting stronger
more rain on the way in, but seems to be slipping south of us.

Cyas all,

Andrew Wall

perhaps not now that I have opened my trap.....

But it looks like we could see some more decent storm activity over
central western NSW on Thursday - I suppose it is getting toward that
time of year thankgod. Surface temps over the inland look like being
mid 20's ahead of a cold front although I wish the 500 temps would drop
back down a bit. A quick browse of AVN data set 48 hours out and
forecast (03Z 26/8) LI is down to -5 ish [CAPE, which will be an
interesting forecast tool to watch this season, is a whopping 1000J/kg
over the same area :) ]. Other indices seem to give similar relatively
storm friendly figures. There is also a little 200mb jet streak over
the area as well.

Thursday mornings Cobar sounding might be more revealing.

Just to let you know.....I was driving from Parkes to Sydney this afternoon
and passed directly under 2 cells.....One between Orange and Bathurst,
around Dunkeld about 2.30....some thuder and heavy rain, the other near Mt
Lambie (just west of Lithgow) about an hour later....just moderate rain
