In the past half hour (perhaps from 12:30 to 1:30pm) , we had a grass fire
on our dam which started somehow from behind I would suppose. I have taken
a few photos. I think some people don't have any idea just how quickly
grass fires can spread.

Now Michael Bath and a couple of others know just how lacking we are in
trees around here. The fires can spread quite quickly though even though
the grass looks green. It is getting quite dry.

Hi all,

Due to popular request there are now pages for all the times
on the fnmoc page located at
http://strikeone.com.au/fnmoc/fnmoc.cgi

These pop up in windows and if anyone is having problems
with the system please email me personally at
mike at strikeone.com.au with some information on what happens.

The display is suited more to 800x600 screen resolutions or
greater but any less will work ok.

Hope people find this page helpful.

Grass in the Illawarra area that is on sand - Lake Illawarra, Primbee, etc
is starting to look very brown. I noticed smoke from a fire west of the
Illawarra escarpment this afternoon. A dramatic contrast to the east coast
north of Newcastle.

Before the last lot of rain and storms the drought index here was about
34 which is really quite low for fires however when it gets to 50 a lot
of grasses start to dry out enough to be flammable. But the index is
highly subjective depending on the rainfall which of course can be
wildly at variance from one place to another. On projections based on an
assumption of continuing rainfall of <5mm per day the index would have
reached 50 in about another 2 weeks.
Although it's called the (Byram-Keetch) drought index it is used mainly
in estimating bushfire potential.
Sufficient to say that yes we are going through quite a dry spell.
Probably these westerlies (I had a dewpoint of minus 1 yesterday
morning) are the main cause.

Hey everyone,

Just before the rain last thursday night, i was beginning to think that
maybe we might be in for a bad bushfire season up here. Since the Rural Fire
Service is all jittery about burning off ( because of the pressures from all
quarters), the undergrowth in my area has become thick over the last decade
or so (last fires came thru here 1967? i think), and with the dry weather
recently and the winds, alot of the forests are very dry.
With the urban environment creeping into bushed area more and more, does
anyone think that in australia, we should have special provisions for living
in fire prone country especially when;
1. austarlian eucalypt bushfire are the most dangerous of all wooded fires,

2. With earthmoving equipment, and engineeering technology becoming better
and more available, house are being built where they would't have 10 years
ago. Go for a drive in any mountain area where there is bush and see how
houses are attached to the sides of cliffs.

3.Will environmental awareness becoming more so, there is a hesitation in
burning off, cutting down trees therefore increasing fire fuel around
houses.

Just some thoughts. I don't think there is enough bushfire awareness at the
moment. In the years after the new year fires in sydney, there was but since
then i feel there has been a complacency mood set in. Any way i know i am
off the topic, but maybe there could be some sort of fire forecast. I know
we get fire danger, but rarely do we hear that, and most outbreaks generally
come when we least know.

he heads back home in the morning.. he does not have access to his email
address that is subscribed to this list, so he has asked me to write
this email for him..

Jason wants to know if anyone has any tips for him.. ie. what sort of

Money is the key ingredient - if you have the $$ go digital. Get one that
can take stills as well, and one that connects readily to a PC. I also think
that JVC have a simple time lapse feature - something I have always wanted.

If you do not have the $$ for digital then at least make it Hi8 or Super
VHSC, you do not see much in the way of Super VHSc these days, so Hi 8 may
be it.

Canon have optical stabilisation which supposed to be superior to digital
stabilisation. Ignore the digital zoom - it is just a gimmick, so what if it
200X digital zoom when all you get is 5 huge pixels. Optical zoom is what to
look at.

The reason I recommend the Hi8 over standard 8mm is that video stills come
out better.

Hi all,

On a recent flight to Canberra I took some shots of some iridescence from the
air. (The quality is purposely crap to reduce download time.)

A thin feint rainbow beside a fogbow:

A small 360 rainbow:

And another:

And another with the distinct shadow of our aeroplane in the centre:

An interesting cloud:

I'll prolly only keep the images there temporarily.

Cheers!
