Chas, I think the problem was a transient one -- I haven't had any
further reports of problems.

BTW, the server that hosts my Bureau data processing is undergoing
major changes at present, and the automatic updates to my page may be
a bit eratic until Friday 8 October.

Just a slight correction. I don't have message bank so please don't try
and leave a message. If the phone drops out just wait and try and get us
say 10-30 minutes after We will always try contacting someone from within
mobile range.

Wise move guys, the cool southerly is already through the Illawarra at 10am, normally I would kiss all storm  chance goodbye, but the radar loop is saying that there maybe is a last swansong with a weak band of showers and possibly a thunderstorm coming in from the NW. Although believe it or not it appears to be splitting to miss Wollongong - Shellharbour. Oh well it does not appear that impressive anyway.

So far I've had a resoundingly positive response !!! I'm curious to know how many on the aussie-weather list are also on wx-chase. Maybe this is a good time to start a larger information & knowledge sharing exercise with the chasers in the States - Dean Sgarbossa (Vic) & Rals (Qld) are already in contact with chasers over there on a regular basis. My suggestion - maybe 1 person from each state could email a copy of some of the chase reports making it to the aussie-weather list, URLs regarding chase reports etc to the wx-chase list. I think this would be a great way for us (and ASWA) to become well known amongst chasers in the USA. What does everyone think? If you do a follow up post to wx-chase point out that they can do a simplified subscribe at: http://world.std.com/~dhart/awlist.html and that we have a digest, that might be useful to folks in the states to whom its not as important to get the info in near real time, who might want to keep the volume of mail down. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hello all, Well, it seems that yesterday was an interesting one in the mid north of SA. Reports are coming in about a massive hailstorm (golf ball hail) that passed over Auburn in the Clare Valley wine area about 3.00pm yesterday. Apparently hundreds of hectares of vines have been destroyed and damage has been put in the millions. As it happened, I was bushwalking in the mid north yesterday at Mt Bryan about 50km to the east of where the action was and I can tell you, it was wall to wall massive cumulus, pileus and suspicious lowerings. Very spectacular. I took some general cloudscapes, but where we were was in the drier zone east of the ranges and all we got were some sharp showers. I believe Yongala (north of the Clare valley) has totalled 80mm in the last 72h. Very good totals for this almost drought affected area... THE AUSTRALIAN SEVERE WEATHER ASSOCIATION INC WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - Issue 11

The Australian Severe Weather Association Inc (ASWA) is here to provide a platform for discussion into severe weather, research and education. A lot has been written about about Australia's severe weather in the past and you can view many different stories of people's experience with the weather in the offical ASWA magazine "Storm News". Discussion about the latest weather and a great place to learn from is the aus-wx mailing list from which ASWA Inc was originally formed. The mailing list is filled with people who are eager to help teach others about all aspects of meterology and to share their experiences.

Membership into the ASWA Inc is $30 a year (with access to the Bureau of Meterology's radar and a quarterly subscription to "Storm News) or if you don't wish for radar $20 a year (with the quarterly subscription to "Storm News" still remaining.) Both visitors and members are welcomed to attend State Meetings. State Meetings are held in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland in their capital cites. Members can also have the chance to buy an ASWA T-shirt in either polo or round neck styles. If you would like to join you can visit the ASWA Inc website at

SA - Vic ASWA Members Get Together - written by Kathryn Jolly

The Beginning

12 weeks ago Chris Gribben and I decided to plan a weekend get together for the Victorian and South Australian ASWA  members.  I decided to hold it on the long weekend in Oct (SA's long weekend) so that way we could travel a bit further into Victoria and the Vic members wouldn't have so far to go on a 2 day weekend.  We decided to stay at the Emu Holiday Park, in the Grampians and so emails were sent to all members of the Vic - SA divisions.
7 people replied to this email to say that they would like to come.  A few weeks later 1 Vic member pulled out due to other arrangements followed by another Vic member a couple of weeks after that.  This left us with 5 ppl,  Andrew Wall, Cherelyn Wall, Chris Gribben, Nick Sykes and myself.

The Weekend

Andrew, Cherelyn and I arrived at the Emu Holiday Park at approx 1.30pm.  Chris and Nick from Melbourne weren't expected to arrive until 9 - 9.30pm that evening, so we decided to do a small amount of sight seeing before heading back to organise some dinner.  A couple of hours before Chris and Nick's  e.t.a. we lit a bonfire in the barbeque and hand fed possums our bread.  We even saw a Scorpion no longer than a 20c piece.

At 9pm there was a knock on our cabin door and we opened it to find the caretaker standing there with a phone message from Chris to say that they have had some car trouble but will still on their way.  No problems we thought so Andrew decided he would goto bed until they arrived and Cherelyn and I got out the deck of cards.  Approx 10.15pm while Cherelyn was outside the Caretaker arrived again, to inform us that Chris's car trouble was major and for me to ring him at his home in an hour.  The words "His Home" didn't come as good news to us, so we woke Andrew up and drove 20kms to get in phone range with the Mobile Phone.  After spending 20mins on the phone to Chris we knew deep down they would not make it to our destination.  I told Chris to ring the caretaker in the morning at 9.30am to let us know of his situation as he said he was going to try to organise a car.

It just so happened that I was at the caretakers office when Chris phoned the next morning.  The news wasn't good.  There was no car available for him and Nick to travel to where we were staying.  So I told him we would be in Melbourne in approx 4 hrs.  There was no way I travelled 500kms to meet fellow ASWA members and good IRC friends and not actually get the chance to do so.  So by 10.30am we were on the Western Highway headed for Melbourne.

At approx 2.15pm we arrived at the home of Chris Gribben and finally got to meet both Nick and himself.  They were both extremely nice and one would have thought we see each other all the time (in a way we do but not face to face) as we all got on extremely well.  Chris kept apologizing about his car breaking down, but thought it was just great we travelled the extra 300kms to meet them.  It turned out that Chris and Nick never even made it to the City of Melbourne they only broke down 20 mins from home.  At 3.24pm Andrew McDonald arrived this was just great to us as Andrew (Macca) was one of the people that pulled out in the beginning, so meeting him was an added bonus.  It turned out that Macca had a tape of a storm that Jane O'Niell had video tape so we retreated downstairs to watch it.  Some of the comments were quite humorous.

During the tape I thought I would phone home to check on how things were just to be told they had had storms for the last 7 hrs and they were still continuing.  A lot of swearing and cursing was done by 3 SA ASWA memebers so it was a race up to the computer to check out the local Adelaide radar, an echo of " ________  hell" was heard around the room.  We retreated back to the lounge room where we had a great chat, and photos upon photos upon photos were passed around.  Macca left as we were organising dinner, it was great to meet him, since we wouldn't have had the opportunity if things had gone to plan.

Approx 10pm Nick left after doing a wonderful job of cooking up the chops and sausages for tea, so Chris showed Cherelyn and I his weather photos as we had not seen them earlier, and the 3 of us finally goto bed approx 2am.  Andrew had goto bed much earlier being exhausted from all the driving.

We left Chris's place and an overcast and foggy Melbourne about 9am Sunday morning and were glad we decided to go there as a wonderful time was had by all, and we look forward to the next time we meet.  Andrew Cherelyn and I arrived back in FINE AND SUNNY Adelaide approx 5.30pm CST.  8hrs driving time.

QLD's ASWA Media Coverage

ASWA's has segment on Extra - by James Chambers

A reporter and cameraman came to my place to do a story on Qld ASWA for the show "Extra" which is shown only in Qld just before the news on Ch 9.  The reporter Doug Murray interviewed us individually and of course we'd all like to give him some better answers, but the pressure was on! I was filmed looking hopefully up at the sky for good weather (they made me do it) for about 3 mins and we were also filmed in the computer room looking at data/photos and also looking at a photo album. They made me do something with an umbrella that will be totally embarrassing I'm sure.Anyway we made sure the reporter had the exact URL of the ASWA site, and how much the subscription is etc. This segement was shown on Thursday September 30th.

More media coverage - by James Chambers

There is currently a lot happening now in terms of the Qld ASWA and the media. You all would know about the story on "Extra"  Well, this morning I got a call from a producer at 612 4QR and I'm going to do a LIVE interview at around 5.50am (eeek!) Friday morning (October 1st). Further, a Sunday Mail photographer will be coming around to take a pic of me at 10am tomorrow for a later story. (I tried to get him to come to the Qld ASWA Meeting or use Anthony's pic that was shown in the local papers but he didn't like the idea).

All of this publicity is due to Anthony Cornelius working his heart out typing letters and sending to newspapers all across Qld. I feel like I'm 'stealing' all the publicity that Anthony effectively created. With all my dealings with the media in the last few days I've asked them if they could wait until Anthony got back from O.S. next
week. Each time they wanted to do it in 'a hurry'. In the radio interview tomorrow morning I'll be doing my best to heap praise on Anthony - but it'll be live, so anything can happen! Just a couple of my thoughts and news on what's happening in Qld.

Weather News

South Australia - report from Adelaide's Sunday Mail

Adelaide and surrounding  areas exprecienced storms for over 12 hours on Saturday. (3 SA members were in Vic - not fair).  The electrial storm raged across most of the state triggering heavy rain, hail, flooding and numerous car accidents. Parafield recorded 45mm of rain by 9pm on the Saturday night, while the city recorded 15mm.  The Mid North state of Jamestown recorded 60mm of rain by 9pm also.  Heavy hail (golf ball size) in the Clare Valley region was reported with them getting 50mm of rain in 15 minutes just after 3pm.  Some Southern Suburbs experienced power blackouts for most of the day.

A quick message -  I am surprised that no one else has sent me mail concerning their weather.  I know of some states that have had activity this last week through emails posted to aus-wx, but it isn't up to me to search thru the aus-wx emails looking for information.  If you would like me to add your weather details to the newsletter,  when you send a copy to aus-wx also CC it to me this way I will get it twice and know to include it.

I've had fresh N'ly winds all day here, but it never got above 26C. I've got my eye on the next line of storms, which have established them nicely in a position that is good for us in this type of event. Firstly, a great deal of thanks to Kathy for helping with the organisation of the weekend just gone. Although it didn't quite go to plan both before the w/end and during it - she was always positive about it and so a big thanks to you Kathy :-) Secondly, it was bloody fantastic that Kathy, Andy and Cherelyn made the effort to get here on the Saturday after all my dramas on the Friday night. It was great to meet them and I must admit that on friday night I was feeling pretty ordinary with things, and for them to drive here was unreal. We had a great day and night talking to each other and everyone had a great time - apart from the fact Adelaide were getting storms! I will find a way to pay them back for doing this one day - fantastic of you guys to do what you did! :P Thirdly, thanks to Nick for not only cooking on Sat night but keeping me company on the Friday night - we had a few brews and watched some funny TV, good on ya Nick. And finally, it was good to see Andrew Macdonald turn up for a while too - and thanks to him also for bringing that video we watched. I suppose I should also thank the RACV for the tow of the car, and aranging a taxi for us etc. Anyway, enough from me for now - good storms to you all Hope that the next meeting I have with the SA members goes a bit more smoothly - lol Chris Gribben ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 018 Date: Mon, 04 Oct 1999 19:43:29 +1000 From: Anthony Cornelius [cyclone at flatrate.net.au] X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.6 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: Australian Weather Mailing List [aussie-weather at world.std.com] Subject: aus-wx: SE QLD Storm Damage Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, Ok - some severe t'storms have gone through some areas, the worse hit areas are Inala and Oxley (western suburbs), these places have received flooding, some roads have been closed, and on Bohil Rd there are reports of cars that are under water. Along Ipswich Rd, and nearby areas, there are some blackouts, and some trees/powerlines are down. Highest rainfall figure I've heard so far, is a rather petty 40mm in an hour, which is very heavy - but not normally enough to cause flooding like that here. Clearly, the recent rainfall previous to today has been evident. Still have light rain here - had winds of 33-35kn, and very heavy rainfall (heavy enough to cause the gutters to overflow). Had a terrific CG, with simultaneous lightning/thunder + power surge though. Just heard that a car on Gowan Rd, at Sunnybank has been swept away. Wow...good thing I did come back today, even if all our luggage is lost... Decided to drive into Brisbane a few hours ago to find a good place to take some lightning photographs, but by the time i got in there the storm was right on top of me.. and there was too much rain to take any pictures.. Quite a nice storm actually, although the frequency of lightning was up to 1 per second for approx 20 mins or so.. there were very few Cg strikes.. which was dissapointing, but a storm is a storm.. Came home to find 34mm in the gauge, and it's still raining.. I also had a storm here at 1:30 this afternoon that dumped 19mm in a period of 10-15 mins (estimated from.. not too shabby at all.. Of course i was out chasing at the time (*&# at &*(# at # at ^$(# at $&*).. it seems everytime i leave Redcliffe, we get a decent storm (I left Redcliffe on Dec 16 to chase west of Brisbane.. came home to find we had Golf Ball hail from a probabal supercell).. Full report including Lightning tracker images, radar loops, satellite pictures and damage reports will be within 48 hours..
