Hi Phil

I saw that report on the ABC, too, but I think it must have been
Saturday 2/10 not Sunday 3/10, as all storms had cleared SA by early
morning Sunday. The satpix for the Saturday are worth looking at --
the storms developed unusually behind a weak front under a very marked
and small cold pool (850hPa temp down to around 4C) that moved ENE
across the Eyre Peninsula late morning, carrying what look like two
lines of storms into the state north of Adelaide. They gave Yunta
26.6mm between 5 and 9pm while Parafield AP recorded 36.4mm between
2.10 and 6pm.

Do you mean the hand-drawn standard-issue ones on www.bom.gov.au? I
have these more or less continuously back to 1996. What did you have
in mind?

Michael, given the value of the archive, and the fact that I already
d/l and keep a lot of stuff, it may be useful for me to duplicate your
d/l pattern and at least keep what I don't want to archive for a few
weeks as a backup. Email me if you think this would be useful.

Dear chasers [couch and real life varieties],

I just read a mail stating that the AVN model
got its clouds in the wrong place and consequently
didn't do Jimmy and co-chasers the world's biggest favour.
For me the AVN is a synoptic scale (hundreds of kilometres)
model, with a grid resolution of about 80 km.
It can only tell me where the larger-scale parameters
look favourable for deep convection, but if the
smaller scales don't play along, you get drizzle or less.

What we would love to get our hands on for a decent
mesoscale (10s to 100s of kilometeres) prediction of storms is
fancy things such as real-time surface observations (can't find
those) and the latest LAPS runs (12.5 x 12.5 km^2)
(can't get those either). Radars and visible
satellite imagery are nice ONCE the storms are already
there. But, if you are not in the storm's vicinity
already, the show might be over by the time you
get to the scene. Synoptic models like the AVN, MRF et al.
might miss the storm-favouring mesoscale features entirely;
I would not expect too much from them.

I was just thinking and also feeling a little inspired after that cool
tornado show last night on channel seven, (anyone else see it?) about
our summer storm situation.

I'm still learning about storms etc and thought some of you guys could
help me with what to look for in storm development as I have a pretty
good view in all directions from my place (Blackheath)which is high on
the ridge (1100 metres). I have a great book on weather (about 600 pages
worth) but I am looking for some good aussie insights into things such
as wind sheer, up drafts, down drafts and different ways storms develop
here, ie: pre-frontal storms, convective storms and lifted storms etc.

Basically, could any of you fill me in on some of the signs of good
storm development and also some of the terms and their meanings relating
to decent storm development? Thanks. I appreciate it. My distance from
Sydney and my health often precludes me from chasing or attending
meetings, (my partner does wanna check out that fiddler place though) so
your help would be great.

Cheers,

Lindsay P.

Just great for our little camping plans to Mount Cannobolas. I betcha at
1397 metres, its really misty there. Since the 24/9, we've had more than
160 mm of rain!

Hi all,

Someone recently mentioned the tornado special from Monday night (was this
from the 'Raging Planet' series?) - unfortunately I missed this.

Is it possible that anyone taped this, and if so, could they bring it to the
NSW ASWA meeting on Saturday?

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

Anthony Cornelius and I have issued the very first BSCH forecast.. It
can be found at:

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/products/qldforecasts.htm

The forecasts will be issued at 8pm every night, and will be updated at
any time if required..

The severe weather potential is not yet operational.. i hope to have it
up by the end of the weekend, but with a mountain of other
responsibilities it might not be up until mid next week..

Hey Jane, everyone..

Meant to reply to this a few days ago..

I have been on both WX-CHASE and WX-TALK for a few months now.. they're
both good lists at times..

I think getting Australian weather on both lists is a great idea.. i've
posted a couple of BSCH updates (major updates) to both lists..

Spotted it the other day - David Hart thought it was a good idea and is
thinking about a friend of his in the UK for the same reason & a list he has
there - if you and I do it, that should work well (so long as the
standard is high) - what about NSW, SA & WA??? Wanna toss a coin?

Ive been on WX-CHASE for a few months.. it gets a tad annoying.. i tend to
just skip through them until something catches my eye, they rave on and on
about somethings, certainly a very different list to this one, but now and
then it has its good moments.. im also on the Lightning List (as a few
others are) and i find that it reminds me of this list alot, (no one really
tells each other off and everyone respects what other people say)
just my thoughts,

BTW myself and Jimmy are back from the chase.. yeah we heard 2 rumbles of
thunder and saw a bit of lightning but nothing like what we were hoping
would happen..heavy rain near tenterfield was the most exciting part .. a
very long trip (sydney-tamworth-glen innes-tenterfield-wollongbar(lismore)
somewhere around 900km in 1 day...not something i care to repeat in a
hurry...but come November we wont have to drive that distance every day, we
can just hang around and wait (i hope!)
(BTW a caravan that can hold 5 people,possibly 6 was $25 a night at
Kempsey, which is 4-5 $ a night divided up.. not to shabby!)

So, in reply to my own rather confused email that just came down, I could
do Victoria, Ben could do Queensland & what I'm really asking is anyone else
here on the wx-chase list or would like to send them reports from the other
states? (last thing we want to do is to double up with reports)

Hi Everyone,

I have put up some of the pics which I took on the chase around Tamworth
last month (25th and 26th September).

By the way the pic of lightning is my first ever. Didnt think I had captured
