Hi Everyone,

We got back to Mona Vale last night just as a bolt of lightning struck a
transformer and blacked out whole of Mona Vale shopping centre momentarily.
It happened so fast there was no time to take a photo but the whole misty
atmosphere lit up green all around us. Some residential streets still had
no power two hours or so later.

We have scored 48.5 mm of rain until 9am Tuesday morning.

Judy Mayo.

We have a small storm just to the SW at the moment (12.50pm) heading ENE.
Very dark base but only a few minor features on the northern flank. Other
Cbs are developing to the WNW amongst a lot of patchy mid and upper level
cloud.

The ASWA satpic archive reports that GMS5 satpic images between approx
1300Z and 1500Z have returned from 16/10/1999. This means that the
so-called "Eclipse Operation" of GMS5 has ceased until it begins
again from about 26/02/2000 to 12/04/2000. A few questions;

(1) Can anyone "in the know" please explain the purpose of GMS5
"Eclipse Operation". There has been some previous discussion about
this on the list but I don't have an "official" answer. My analysis
points toward a scientific reason being the need to study the Sun's
corona while the Earth eclipses the Sun from the GMS5 perspective.

(2) Precise dates of "Eclipse Operation". Is there any site about?

(3) Will the new GMS satellite exhibit the same behaviour as GMS5?

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

Another mention of the "Green Glow". The green flash or glow is something
I have noticed on occassion and seems to be related to lightning destroying
a transformer. The glow might be brief or last several seconds, with peak
intensity typically occuring sometime after the lightning strike. I would
be really interested in theories as to the physics of the situation, i.e.,
why and what is occurring. Is the green glow related to transformer oil
vapour burning or glowing vapourised copper from the coil??

My theory:
A transformer coil has very little resistance to DC current, but a
lightning flash constitutes a very sharp spike, and the coil would offer
substantial resistance because of the effective high frequency component.
So therefore the lightning arcs through the coil, fusing one or more
windings together in the process, which then appear as a virtual short in
the AC circuit, and whammo (technical term), the transformer rapidly
overheats to flash point and explodes. The green glow is caused by copper
ions in the burning oil vapour.

My other half works as a gardener in Gundaroo (NE of Canberra) and he said
that a fairly substantial storm went through yesterday arvo, with rain, hail
and lots of wind. It did a fair bit of damage to the garden.

Yes - been watching this from Barton just south of Lake Burley Griffin - a
half
decent gust front and lots of
lightning in the distance (but no thunder heard here).

The most intense part of this cell passed to the south around Tuggeranong -
should produce some good rain figures and I wouldn't be surprised if there
wasn't some hail.

Looking further to the west it looks like a rain band is setting in with
much
cooler temperatures to follow - I notice Cooma and Mallacoota both sitting
on
13.

HI Adam and others,

I have a friend who lives in Mona Vale (On the headland to the N of the
beach) and she sent me this email in regards to her house being struck by a
big bolt of lightning last night.........

"My house was struck by lightning last nt and it was the biggest shock of my
life. I was speechless. I was sitting on my bed watching TV, and you know
how I have my glass doors that open onto the balcony, well they were closed
but my blinds were open and from the corner of my eyes I saw this huge
lightning bolt heading for me and it hit the steel posts out side my bedroom
and the huge sparks went off it made the hugest bag and then most of Mona
Vale blacked out till 3am."

and when I asked about whether anything happened to the house....

"
Well nothing really!! Everything just shut down straight away no damage
anywhere as far as we can tell ( thank goodness ). Yes from the corner of my
eye this fork like bolt came my way and it made this explosion sound and
turned outside silver, the steel it hit is very very hard and solid "

Very Interesting

If you have one then I would think "why not".

I wouldn't be saying that it should be a precondition but it sure wouldn't hurt.

As the title suggests and that was reported in the ABC's
Quantum program and told to me by a good friend, you can now
produce Meteograms from the GASP model...

http://www.bom.gov.au/silo/products/MeteoGrams.html

But weather kiddies, there's a catch...unlike NCEP (AVN &
MRF), NOGAPS and many other models, access to this info is
not free and you'll need to part with $100 per year or $10
per month...I thought I paid my taxes already:-) It probably
cost the BoM more to put the subscription charges up on their
WWW site than it would to make this limited appeal product,
in comparison to other sites, freely available. IMHO it would
need to be a vastly superior product to that available from
READY, for example...

http://www.arl.noaa.gov/ready/cmet.html

Otherwise, the BoM's SILO site is well put together and
there's some good stuff to be found but I swear by any
holy book you like that while a user-pays principle applies
to any BoM product, it'll be the death-nell of further local
Aussie innovation because very few people are providing any
meaningful user feedback. It's a tough 'net world out there...

That's two days running. What is happening to our weather - it's gone crazy
I tells ya.

But it is *cold* in Canberra today!

Hey Blair, everyone..

That show was taped on Thursday October 14.. 50 000 people were blacked
out that night (the initial figure i posted to the list was 17 500, it
quickly jumped to 30 000 after i posted to the list.. and up to 50 000
later on)..

I have put some radar loops of the storms up on BSCH in the recent
events section..

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/products/recentevents.htm

As i write this email there is pretty sick looking line of weak activity
approaching Brisbane on radar.. it was looking dark to my west before,
but it's all junky stuff up here at the moment, no anvils and no nice
updrafts at all..

Hopefully something nice will develop later on this afternoon/evening..

Here in the Illawarra we had one flash of lightning that I saw, could not
even look as our first baby was being born at the time, healthy 8lb girl.
Perhaps being born just after a thunderstorm, and the first for many weeks
is an omen.

I asked my parents if there was any southen Illawarra action and they said
brief heavy rain and only a distant rumble. The southerly was quite strong
and came through too early here.

Congrats Michael T !!!
I'm glad all has gone well for you both!

A nice omen indeed. My daughter was born during the biggest rainfall event
in the years I lived in Sydney, and we nearly didn't make it due to
flooding and car problems.

Congratz Michael Thompson :)

Western Sydney is currently having a thunderstorm, Daniel Weatherhead rang
me to report heavy rain and small hail and some flooding (which isnt
surprising considering yesterdays activity)
Rain throughout the Sydney met area at present and possibly 1 or 2 cells
off the coast going by radar.

Photos of yesterdays chase are being scanned (yes i couldnt wait and got
them developed today at penrith), ill let you all know soon when they are
up on my site.

Hi Michael et al,

Geez, I couldn't agree more!!! Is the prediction of weather some sort of
secret guild/cult/bloody society???

Yes, we do pay taxes, yet we have to pay for the information!!! (A lot of
which is supplied practically gratis from rainfall recorders...grrr)

So what is the go with the infrastructure here compared to the US, say?
Here, the BoM is funded (by taxpayers) and equipment like radar is paid for
out of the Federal budget (again by taxpayers)...so what is the recouping
about? Are they going to get so good at it that they'll show a profit? Go
public and issue shares? Sheesh... I'm constantly annoyed....

Sorry, here endeth the vitriol...

Kevin from Wycheproof.

Hey Halden, Everyone..

Yeah it was a fizzer up here as well.. just some isolated heavy showers
with the odd rumble of thunder around Brisbane.. a couple of storms
developed south of Brisbane late in the afternoon which had some nice
updrafts at times.. but nothing to write home about..

Some showers and local thunder around Brisbane this evening as well..
some of which are probably quite heavy..

This next system could be a real monster for the eastern states.. it may
be a little early yet to forecast the exact location and track of the
system, but it looks likely to effect southern QLD and parts of NSW late
in the week and over the weekend.. we should really keep an eye on this
system, as it has the potential to produce severe weather over large
areas of NSW and QLD..

For those who are interested, Anthony and I provide quite a lot of
information in our forecasts on BSCH, and will be keeping a close eye on
this system due late this week..

www.bsch.simplenet.com/products/qldforecasts.htm

These forecasts are updated daily at 8pm ..

Hi Michael,

Congratulations on the birth of your baby daughter. Great to see another
future storm chaser born into this world. Youll have her up to speed with
all the ins and outs of chasing especially stratocumulus in no time hehehe.

Anyway once again congratulations and I hope mother and baby are doing well.

Matthew Piper

P.S. Just had a massive downpour of rain here in Blaxland during the last
hour and some rice sized hail. A couple of close CG's as well.

Michael, congratulations to you!!!! There are different levels of
atmospheric activity that occur at birth that could probably be related to a
person's character. It would be interesting to make up a scale of birth
related incidents ie: babies born on stratocumulus days, ranging up through
cumulus, congesting cumulus & cumulonimbus.

I have to admit that a baby born during a storm would rate very highly and
the chances of that in Wollongong would be remote judging by what you have
told me about the number of thunder days you get. Perhaps in the future we
could make up this scale of birth related events & post them and the type of
character that would fit each event - just something for weather nuts, a bit
like horoscopes.....

Best wishes to you, Deborah and ?????? !!!!

Interestingly, although your baby girl was born in a storm, an east coast
low has spun up - so she may grow up to have a complex character which I
guess fits the female gender anyway
