Hi All,

I apologise to any of you who may have visited my current info page at
http://www.ace-net.com.au/~carls/current.htm and found the 1st 2 links to
the current Qld developing TC didn't work!!!

I copied the links OK, but ommited the BoM server, uploaded, got interupted
by incoming call, and didn't get back to check!!! :-(

Anyway they have been corrected now, I just checked them, and they are
working just fine :-)

Advice No 2 has been issued, looks like our TC season is finally underway!

I am preparing a map for an animation now, so will let you know when it is
uploaded.

Regards,
Carl.

I was annoyed it couldn't have held off until after 9 (it hit the central city at 8.25) - if we're going to suffer through a night like that the least we can ask is that it goes in the book! I'll be interested to see the minima at places that the change didn't reach by 9 (e.g. Coldstream, the Latrobe Valley, maybe Scoresby). > Melbourne suffered through a painful night last night, the overnight > temperature not dropping below 26. Scored a nice little funnel cloud yesterday from a similar Cu street with dark base and lowerings over the Redbank area around 2:00pm. Funnel cloud was just ahead of a lowering, and lasted around 5 mins and was a very sharply defined elephants trunk for most of it. I noticed it while I was on the phone to some twit in Sydney, and by the time I got off the phone & got the camera out, it was starting to dissipate - but photo obtained nonetheless. Today looks promising for a repeat performance. I actually saw quite a nice prong (yes, i said a prong) on a coastal shower/large congestus shower yesterday afternoon around 5:30pm .. the shower was very close to my south, and the prong was quite well defined and lasted for about 5 mins.. it showed no signs or rotation at all, but i was surprised at how defined it was - considering how close i was to it.. the shower was part of a cluster of low topped, but fairly well defined (well defined for coastal stuff anyway) cluster of large Cu and Congestus that moved over the top of me.. as this cluster moved over me i had a period of sustained 25-30 knot winds, which then stopped all of a sudden with a heavy shower with very large drops about 20 seconds later.. then the sun came back out! All this while i'm trying to talk on the phone to a potential employer! There was a reasonable amount of vertical extent to the Cu around this morning as well.. we had quite a nice upper level system develop over us yesterday, and this has developed into an upper level low overnight and is sitting just off the southern QLD coast.. I have been saying that i think there could be some storms off this southern QLD coast associated with this low in the BSCH forecasts for the past few days, and looking at the latest satellite picture it looks like they are starting to develop.. considering we're on the western edge of the low (and it's moving slowly away from us) there is probably only a very small chance of us seeing anything decent to the east, or any lightning around tonight.. but stranger things have happened.. we've had SE winds for yonks so i'm clutching on to any hope of decent weather at the moment.. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Thanks Michael, That's a great little summary there. All I can say is that Blackheath (unheated) is VERY cold at the start of the season in October. I'd reckon it is below 12. I actually continue to shiver the whole time I'm in the pool whilst doing my laps in October. I swam in Penrith pool yesterday (thursday) and I was actually sweating as I got out of the pool, it felt so hot compared to our pool. And it seemed much easier to "Cut" through the water at Penrith too. 20 laps at Penrith would seem like around 10 at Blackheath. Lindsay Pearce. Hi all,

I attended a BOM storm spotters seminar at Queanbeyan today. Whilst I didn't actually learn a lot that anyone who has been on this list for a while wouldn't otherwise know, there were a few interesting tidbits to keep my attention - and some interesting storm slides. (Sadly the field examples I had been hoping for didn't develop in this region today - other than some distant cb tops visible to the far north.)

What was particularly significant was the announcement by Clem Jones, OIC Canberra BOM, that a new radar site will be established at Captains Flat and should be operational in the next 6 months. This is great news for Canberra (a long way from Sydney and the intermittently offline Wagga). It will also provide much needed improved coverage for large areas of the Southern Tablelands (and eastern parts of the Snowy Mtns) as well as the South Coast and up to the Illawarra. A lot of low and middle level cloud rain events in SE NSW currently go completely undetected on radar and many storms are underestimated or not seen - especially if Wagga is offline for radiosonde tracking.

As the group in the spotter seminar were mostly NSW National Parks staff and a few Canberra emergency service personnel, it was interesting to (again) pick up perceptions of what members of the general public know about storms/severe weather.

There were questions about the difference between cyclones and tornadoes, amazement when the reality of tornadoes in Australia was explained. There was further amusement about Twister and the fact that people in the US might actually chase storms with the hope of finding tornadoes.

At this stage I had to explain that as I spoke there was currently a team of 20-30 Australians (+ a couple from o/s) who were roaming NW NSW and Sthn Qld with precisely the aim of finding severe storms and hoping to observe tornadoes.

The group was left speechless; there were then a couple of questions along the lines of "are they mad", "isn't it dangerous"?

I explained that while there were risks, the people concerned had a pretty good idea of the structure of storms and could use their knowledge to manage the degree to which they placed themselves at risk. One of the aims of the Australian chase was to increase our knowledge of the storms that occur in areas of low population density.

I wished I had more forcefully made the point that the bigger risk is borne by the general public - unaware of the real dangers posed by Australian storms. I think that message was made pretty clear during the course of the day - the slides of Australian tornadoes certainly reinforced the point.

Sorry about the essay,

Patrick

By 01:30 the temperature had fallen to 23 deg., then by 02:00 it had risen to 27 deg, at which point it plateaud until the cold front crossed at 07:30. By 09:00 the temperature had plunged to 15.0 deg. The barograph rose 7 mb between 07:30 and 09:00. Squally westerly winds accompanied the cold front, which brought down several tree limbs across the city, however little other damage resulted. Rain commenced at 08:50 and continued until 10:30, resulting in a disappointing total of only 5.4 mm. The rest of the guys except Dane, Matt Piper and myself are off to around Bathurst to Mudge this evening and will wait on the Hunter or thereabouts to fire for tomorrow. It should be interesting as the change has passed through Sydney tonight about 10:35pm. This should feed a little moisture into the stagnated trough. Hopefully things will fire in the Hunter. I am planning to head for the Hunter tomorrow and then stay with group locally for Sunday before heading home late Sunday. If anyone would like to tag along with me, by all means contact me tomorrow morning say around 7am on the mobile 0408020468. Not the best of storms expected but storms nevertheless. Once again the temp struggled to just reach 25C at the airport. They say that summer is coming any day real soooonnn now. But the ridge looks like being reinforced by the next high, so nothin's gonna change in the near future, just more cool & boring S/SE's. Does anyone have any recordings of static interference from an electrical storm that I could test with. Anything from 5 seconds to 1 minute would be handy also need it in WAV format as well. Could you please describe what mode you received the static on as well ie. USB, LSB, AM, FM, etc... and also how far away approx the storm was from you. Thanks in Advance Andrew Wall PS you can send the file over Email or you can give me the link to the file if that would be easier.. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------
