Is this a funnel on the 4th page????? and Snappy's are great for capturing
images off video (as Michael T has already shown) - I promise to read the
manual at some stage, but I had to share the first couple of images with
you.

Happy New Year to all of you in both hemispheres,

up from his place, we then headed north towards Pearce Air force base,
nothing to the N, so East we went....and the rest is lovely.....7
different storms with a STA out aswell.( See below), made it to Wongon
Hills NE of Perth, headed back thru goomaling towards Toodyay. While out
near wongon hills of a grave rd it pisssed down at #$ at #! hard, hail 60
Km/h cross winds made it fun to drive. Seen some great mamantus, back
shearing anvil( S/Cell) just as it was starting to die, all up it was a
great chase 700 Km covered, 1 S/C, and one roll of film finished, will
get the report up asap, photos will be developed tomorrow.

FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM ADVICE
Issued at 8:20 pm WST on Tuesday, 28 December 1999

FINAL ADVICE

People in the Central Wheat Belt and Great Southern Districts are
advised that
thunderstroms will continue this evening but the risk of severe
thunderstorms
should abate withing the next hour.

At 8 pm a line of thunderstorms was observed on radar from about
Dalwallinu to
Northam to Katanning and was moving slowly eastwards.

Storms may be accompanied by hail, flash flooding and strong winds that
could
result in damage to property.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should keep a lookout
for
thunderstorms and if storms approach secure loose items, move vehicles
under
cover, then stay indoors until the storms have passed. Driving
conditions may be
hazardous.

This is the final Thunderstorm Advice unless redevelopment occurs.

Well we got some great storms in WA today & a great chase to boot! John
(whos been away in the UK for nearly 2yrs) and I chased. Mark & Greg also
chased, others may have but i dont know yet. Huge cells just linded up
right along the scarp for hundreds of k's. We saw some of the best mamatus
ive ever seen, some great storms. An awesome lightning show that went into
the night for 4 hours it was unreal, very very active cells and some of the
most photogenic lightning around, no city lights and heaps of CG's. We got
heaps on film & video. It sure is a great feeling standing in the middle of
some back road, watching storms with the cameras setup with a good mate :)
Also a possible funnel on video, im not saying till i see the video, its
hard to say what it was, it was either scud shaped like a funnel, but it
was out on its own and it did persist for quite a while which scud doesnt
normally do so i dunno, we didnt see it rotating but we were a fair way
away. Who knows. Anyway, will post the pics ASAP

Grining from ear to ear :) cant ya tell :P

It was very heavy rain off the northern suburbs of Sydney earlier check

Quite evident that a low has developed off Sydney.

Some very heavy rain in storms yesterday as the Sydney boys have already
said in previous messages. I targeted the Robertson area and got some great
pics of a guster with cloud curtains almost on the ground. It all sounds
severe, but when you are in an environment that is almost saturated at
ground level, and 300-500m cliff faces thrown in, well any small turbulence
produces condensation.

This storm was flagged severe by the BOM as it was Pink on radar for quite
some time.

Are all the Merriwa images snappy's or just the ones with the date. If the
first is a photo you may want to put up a larger pic as it definitely looks
suspicious, better than it did in real life actually. What is Clyve's
verdict ?

I came to the same conclusion just before I read your message, there does
appear to clockwise rotation evident in the cloud, coming ashore south of
Wollongong, but definitely leaving shore near Wyong.

Winds here are 20-25knots.

According to my records, the last day of FULL sunshine in Blackheath was
on the 12th of December. Its getting a bit depressing :-(

Making it hard to get into the laps at our local pool and tennis for
that matter. Not that I play tennis at our local pool...

Hope it fines up for our holidays down south, then again, the cloud
makes for good fishing.

My hapenny's worth -

First row: the one on the left looks suspicious but the one on the right looks
like a scuddy gust front / gust front shear or a boundary.

2nd row: left - yeah yeah yeah but was it rotating, the one on the right - not
sure.

I'm interested in the Saturday night.

Does your video play NTSC, as I have some US tapes, one that Jimmy would
consider H rated, for all the scenes of hail.

Hi all,

I have added a couple of new things to the South Australian Severe Weather
watchers homepage.

First addition is a description of Cloudnadoes and Fohn wall clouds which
can be found under Articles from the main page. The description was written
by a South Australian ASWA Inc. member.

The second is the addition of another gallery member Phil Bagust, he has
supplied me with 7 photographs which now have there place in the Gallery
area which can be accessed via the main page.

Enjoy!

In terms of the video night, I am thinking if having the meeting and video
night in one either on the 8th January or 15th January, which is a Saturday
and in the early evening. I hope this helps. Please do indicate whether you
are going is it becomes difficult to plan meetings otherwise.

Howdy all.

Large mass of monsoonal storm rolling in from NW atm.

On radar presents as a arge band of light blue with plenty of yellows.

Also great squall line of storms linking from adelaide river to Jaibaru.

Similar at Strathfield - I was driving east on the M4 towards Strathfield
just after 3pm, with the majority of cars pulling over onto the side of the
road because of poor visibility. There was also localised flooding around
strathfield, with Concord Rd (near the Strathfield train station) closed
with over 40cm of water over the road. Also some flooding on Redmyre Rd,
flooding some shops opposite the Strathfield PO.

I also thought it was strange how the Homebush AWS only recorded low amounts
of rain - I suppose the rain was very localised.

Hello Everyone

We have had strong southerlies here in Strahan. The high to our west
tightening the gradient as it pushes the low to the east. This has been
devastating for the Melbourne to Devonport and Melbourne to Hobart yacht
races with most boats having to retire from the beating the have had
from the head winds. This is in complete contrast to the Sydney to
Hobart with Nokia beating the record by about nineteen hours and a large
number of boats finishing under the old record time.
Gale force south east winds for the east coast with a strong wind
warning for the rest of the coastal waters. This is not good news for
the slower boats in the Sydney to Hobart as it will be a tough beat into
the wind down the Tasmanian east coast.

Chas
Strahan Tasmania

Hi All.

Long range forecaster Hayden Walker gave his long-range yr 2000 forecast
for Qld. on Channel 7's Today Tonight last night.

Seems we are in for another record wet year, probably exceeding 1999's
already record totals in many areas, especially across tropical Australia
and SE Qld.

Also showed an image of the current huge Sunspots that are the basis of his
forecast method, which he compares with weather records and planetary
positions - these methods were taught to him by his father, Lennox Walker,
who in turn learned them from Inigo Jones.

His forecast for last year was quite accurate, and he now predicts a very
wet 4 months for Nth Australia and the Qld coast - with a brief respite
from the wet for New Year's Eve/Day for South East Qld.

Regards,
Carl.

A whole heap of storms developing in the south west currently, with a
severe thunderstorm advice out as Mark said earlier. The view of the storms
from here in Perth look great, huge towers can been seen along the hills
and to the N and SE.

The heat continues in Perth, even though its a little cooler today, 33C on
the moment, we've been in humid NW to SW winds since early morning, 38C is
forecast for the next 3 days. According to the the report in todays West
Australian newspaper, if the current heatwave continues, this will be the
hottest December in Perth ever recorded.

Hi everyone,

Lightning clearly visible here from storms off the coast of NE NSW - up to 3
times a second - but mostly 1 - 2 flashes per second.. although they appear to
be weakening slightly at the moment, both visually (lightning wise) and on
radar..

Any NE NSW people watching this?

Hi Mal

That part of concord road near the tunnel at strathfield station always
floods in heavy rain, lucky it is 2 lanes around the corner, or traffic
would never get through the flooded area, drove past it today, you can see
leaves etc all over the place down there as usual

Matt -> still no emails from anyone interested in the video night on the
8th or 15th i think (saturday nights)...
