Hi all,

I have uploaded some radar that I have saved for today for those
interested to look at.

Goto:

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/anthony/Dec%2030/

There's a wide assortment of radar - there's no times there (all radar
pretty much starts/ends when the action commences/concludes).
Everything is in order (ie, a is first, then b etc).

For those who aren't used to radar numbers, the following numbers are
the following radars:

IDR031lp = Syndey 1024 (broad) loop
IDR033lp = Sydney 256 (local) loop
IDR043lp = Williamtown 256 (local) loop - this will be the one most
people will be after
IDR283lp = Grafton 256 (local) loop
IDR501lp = Brisbane 1024 (broad) loop
IDR503lp = Brisbane 256 (local) loop

All of the above contain severe thunderstorms.

extern.gif is just a couple of tracker images (not very
exciting) - and there's 3 sat pics at the end.

Hopefully this will be of use to some people.

Hi all

My report on the incredible supercell of December 10, 1999 is up, at
http://www.ozemail.com.au/~jamestorm/bristorm/reports/dec10_99.htm.

Don't read the report, just look at the pics!! Only joking! It was a very
photogenic storm...just a pity I had only a few minutes to take photos
before I had to go into work.

Happy reading

Norcia to check and get more Photo's from the damage yesterday as we did have time to stop at the time.. Trucks behind us with one
lane still blocked is a minor problem...will put pick's and any findings up asap.

Hi all,

I keep forgetting to ask this...but, when everyone stayed at my house on
Tuesday night over a month ago - with the washing we did, some one left
a pair of socks behind. Does anyone want to claim them? They're navy -
I'll wait 10 days for some one to claim them, if not, I'll just pop them
into a Lifeline bin.

Hi All,

The cell that I chased last night and that moved though Ballina, gave 35mm
in about 20 mins at my parents place in town. "winds were swirling around
from all directions".

At Pimlico about 7ks SW of town, from a caller on 2LM: "almost 2 inches of
rain in 30 minutes, garade door was almost blown in, mopping up water in
there now, I thought it would be a repeat of 18 Dec last year".

I see a severe storm advice was issued for my region (Northern Rivers)
after 1am this morning. Looking at the satpics just now it seems it all
weakened before reaching here. An advice was put out for here at 8.45pm
last night as well, but after the storm had crossed the coast N of Ballina.

And I must say a big WOW !!!! to the pic of Ira's - yes what a delimma -
where did you go? Fantastic shot! And also to James for his supercell pics
in Brisbane - what a massive system that is - incredible boiling updrafts.

cheers, Michael

Further to Blair's figures: I've been away for a week and missed all the
action, but my correspondents report that in the recent rain week (26th to
28th), rainfall varied from only 20 mm at Barwon Heads to over 110 mm at
Lara. The out-of-town Geelong AP AWS (BoM)at Mt Duneed only reported 17 mm
for the 3 days which is very suspect since two independent neighbours
(within one km) recorded around 50 mm. This has happened several times
recently and deserves investigation by the BoM but despite my reports
they've done nothing.
Happy new year to all,
Lindsay Smail.

Excellent to see the pictures from all over the place - WA and Qld, NSW.
Will have a more thorough look later on - next year some time. These last
few weeks have been amongst the best coverage of storms right around
Australia. Well done guys.

As for radar, I don't actually believe the stuff that I saw around Maitland
was exaggerated on radar. There was a resonable cell joining onto the major
cell at that time. There was also a flanking line extening at least 15km
from the supercell. This would have produced hail later as it was all growing..

Have a Happy New Year ASWA and people on the list.

Some impressively large maximum temperature anomalies for the
week ending Wednesday: -10.3 at Bourke, -8.8 at Wilcannia, -8.7
at Cobar, -8.1 at Dubbo, and numerous others in inland NSW and
Queensland below -7.

Melbourne's rainfall for the month (closed off at 0900 this morning)
was 94mm, give or take a few decimal points. This is the wettest
month since April 1996, but does not break the run of consecutive
months below 100mm, now standing at 44. This is the second-longest
such run, with the existing record standing at 58 months (March 1892-
December 1896).

(I was about to post that Melbourne was recording its first rain of
the 2000s - anything falling now being credited to tomorrow - but
notice that the drizzle that's been falling for the last hour has,
thus far, failed to register anything in the gauge).

Thanks Blair,

Good to get some info on the European storms, was wondering about it
all. Much snow in any of these storms? What sort of temps occurred in
Scotland etc?

I've had a unconfirmed report of 12 inches of water on the highway at West
Ballina near Macca's, as well as 120km/h winds...........no reports of any
damage that I know of though.......I couldn't go out there for 2
reasons....1: no car...grrr 2: had to go to work...GRRR
I hope there's none tonight as I've got to got to work again
tonight....AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH
I've got some friends that live out at West Ballina, I'll try to get to see
them soon & find out more.
See Ya's

Hello all.....
There are a few cells around here at the moment but at this point nothing
looks very significant....I hear a few muffled rumbles from a cell which is
building to the SW as I speak....perhaps later on this evening.
The LI and CAPE are looking good tomorrow arvo between the Gold Coast and
the Sunshine Coast so there could be some action there.

He's currently been chasing what he believes to be a severe multicell thunderstorm - it's lasted for about two or so hours now - MB has said it doesn't look like a supercell...rather a line of multicells with its strongest edge on the northern side - of which radar confirms. He believes this will definately have hail (yay Jimmy!!) He's quite impressed and happy though from the tone of his voice on the phone! I'll keep everyone updated when possible - the storm appears to be heading for Evans Head - currently, it's certainly the strongest cell on radar - with some smaller and weaker cells to its south. Liaised at home with Michael Bath who positioned himself at Woodburn with radar updates. Ventured out at 5pm to the local airport to get a clear view. Beautiful culiform anvils (three of them) which merged as they headed upwards....about 30km across and being fed by strong cumulus tops about 4500 feet from the ENE. An outflow appeared to the SSW heading towards Woodburn with a nice shelf cloud to the SE of it. There appeared to be a small gustnado. Best mammatus I have seen for some time ahead of it with lightning occasionally snaking to the ground in it. Sped off towards Woodburn....didn't make it to Woodburn...bugged Michael heaps on the mobile (sorry mate) as the cell suddenly appeared to turn back towards Evans Head. I turned around and just overtook it and got a great shot of it (shelf cloud) as the rain hit Evans Head! Tookoff ahead of it to the local lookout.....leaves swirling everywhere but basically being pushed by the strong SW outflow. I was doing 80km/hr and just keeping pace with.....lucky there were no cops around because it is a 50K zone!! Made the lookout as the 50 knot SE hit. Did a shot through the car windscreen before white out. Hail for 5 minutes pea sized but not intense. Fair bit of lightning too. Crawled home for cover. The rain has just stopped at 6.22pm. Rainfall 17mm. A good sharp storm.....and covered from the east and the west thanks to Michael Bath!! Very frequent lightning, about 3-4 flashes a second! The storm itself looks quite impressive! Some (thundery?) showers are popping up on the border ranges to the SW/SSW - I'm watching these very closely, some Altocumulus Castellanus about, I'm currently sitting on 24.9C, DP is 20C and a light NE'er Will keep people updated should anything occur -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 021 Date: Fri, 31 Dec 1999 22:11:29 +1100 From: Ben [bodie at flatrate.net.au] X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.7 [en] (Win95; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: Electrical Storm Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Everyone, Probably the best lightning display of the year visible to the ESE tonight.. absolutely jaw dropping stuff - lightning up to 3-4 times a second, and not like the storm last night where there were 2-3 second gaps inbetween the lightning every now and then - this lightning is constant, with very few breaks.. there are periods of up to 4 seconds or so when there is not lightning in some part of the storm.. The best count i had (over 60 seconds) was 92 flashes.. it was probably even more frequent at times, but somehow COUNTING the lightning flashes takes the fun out of it for me! Lightning Tracker is only picking up about 63 Cg's every 5 mins at the moment, but 90% + of all the lightning is in cloud lightning.. It's quite warm here at the moment, with a temp of 23c at the airport and a DP of 20c - AVN has been forecasting overnight showers or possibly storms for the past 24-36 hours, and there are currently some thundery showers on the border ranges (very sporadic lightning from them) - hopefully they will get going soon.. I have a feeling SE QLD is going to get clobbered overnight or tomorrow (more likely tomorrow).. it largely depends on how far north the SE change gets (which should be somewhere in NE NSW by now).. Just looking outside now, the storm has calmed down slightly with lightning mostly one per second now.. what a great way to end the year!!!!!!
