While I was in Charters Towers I saw two of them in half an hour, both from separate cells. The was also a report in the newspaper that Julia Creek was hit by a dreaded "Mini Tornado" the next day.
If I can see two of them while I'm not even chasing, and a small place like Julia Creek gets hit, imagine how many more there are up in Nth Qld that go unnoticed

Blair and anyone else interested,

What did the BOM get for Katoomba's maximum on Saturday? Channel nine
gave 29.
At my place in Blackheath I got 24.5 and 24.3 on different thermometers.
Surely we couldn't have had such a difference to Katoomba, although we
were under a decent cloud for a while this afternoon. It definately felt
nothing like 28 or so here today.

Whaddya reckon?

Lindsay Pearce.

As Mark Hardy pointed out, the tropical low has now formed officially
into a tropical cyclone! In the warning below, they're suggesting
destructive winds (130km/h), meaning it could go into a Cat 2 before it

The warnings are now hourly because TC Steve is only 140km E of Port Douglas. If you didn't know, the URL for the warnings are here: http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDW50Q00.txt. Flooding is a huge worry for these parts in the path of the cyclone. You can expect to see rainfall intensities exceeding 400mm in 24 hours in the next 2 days (If you know what I mean). That's a lot of rain especially when they've been deluged in the last week. In a couple of days when the situation starts to ease, expect to see places like Cairns, Daintree, Mossmon, Kuranda and Babinda with moutainous totals. Bellenden Ker is sure to see a massive total, but of course we won't know that for a while. It would be good to hear from any Aus-wx subscribers in the threatened area in the next couple of days!! It also has a new url, which is now at: http://members.iinet.net.au/~jacob/austnet/ Jacob +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 013 X-Sender: jdeguara at pop.ihug.com.au X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.2.2 Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 16:53:38 +1100 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Jimmy Deguara [jdeguara at ihug.com.au] Subject: aus-wx: Halden Boyd's prediction Dick Smith flight Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Halden Boyd suggested that he used the avn site which is normally used for the Surface Lifted Index predictions. He used the site for predicted winds. Well here is the article which he wrote back to the NOAH people themselves. I found it interesting that the second part of the letter also outlines the similar uses around the world.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I must write to thankyou very much for you AVN site which has assisted a successful prediction of a touchdown point on the east coast of Auatralia. The information about the balloon crossing can be found at:
http://www.australiangeographic.com/ausgeo/idx_transtas.htm

I am a journalist with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and a private pilot, as well as being a severe weather spotter for the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. I am also a member of the Australian Severe Weather Association. The ASW website is:

http://australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/index.html

This site has a link to your AVN data and it is used considerably by our members and myself. It is accurate and a great tool which is greatly appreciated. I passed on URL to this site by the Trans Tasman Balloon Mission Control Center and they used it as well!!

Getting back to why I am emailing you......myself and daughter Kirryn sat down and used the AVN data available on the NOAA site when the balloon lifted off from New Zealand and predicted a touchdown envelope  stretching 18 nautical miles along the coastline here. It just so happened that it was where we live!

Anyway thanks for your site.....it is greatly appreciated here, and no doubt in many other parts of the world.

Kindest Regards,

Halden Boyd,

Dear Halden,

I'm glad that you were able to use the site to do the balloon
prediction.  It's fun getting stories on how people use
the web site.  One Belgium forecaster gave a talk at NCEP on
how they used the AVN for route planning for the balloon flight
that circumnavigated the world.  He also showed a plot (from
the web site) for Mt Everest which he used to help some
climbers avoid a fatal storm.

TC Steve looks like it is going to cross the coast near Cairns tonight. I have started a map animation at http://www.ace-net.com.au/~carls/SteveAnim.htm, and links to all warnings, etc., are on my website at http://www.ace-net.com.au/~carls/current.htm. I will be updating the animation again early this evening AEST, ISP access permitting (on Sundays it can be difficult to get online). It peaked at 160km/h at 5pm, with an obvious intensification seen clearly on radar (from ASWA). Temporarily, precipitation surrounded the eye completely, and there was a tightening of the eye. However, it has appeared to have weakened slightly, and the BoM are expecting 150km/h gusts now. Not bad really, considering it was named at 7am this morning! TC Steve reminds me of Rona, as it it appeared similar. But James pointed out Rona had much higher tops, which was true - TC Steve looks quite poor on sat pics to be honest! But I'm not being fussy! It was like a pseudo-gust front! Only it drizzled, and the change was only 15-20kn. None the less, it was enough to make me trip down the step into the garage, nearly put my hand through the window while stopping myself falling, and follow it for half an hour. Mind you, this junky TCU (probably 15-18,000ft) did have a fairly curved/laminar appearance on it. Poor Jane was submitted to torture as I phoned her and told her everything that happened as it unfolded... "drizzle is increasing now!" "Wow, my mobile phone could actually start to get wet now!" The joys of an SDS chase! I did see some shortlived horizontal vorticity though! Next time we have a poor storm season, I'll think back to the 99-00 storm season and know that it could be worse!!! Brisbane averages 14.5 thunderdays/storms over summer - I have had 2! So it really can't get much worse than this season... During Spring/Summer our average is 24 thunderdays. I have had 4 thunderstorms... -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 018 Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 21:24:10 +1100 From: Ben Quinn [bodie at flatrate.net.au] X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.61 [en] (Win95; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: Bucca F4 Tornado Pictures Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Matt, lol - when my father saw those pictures he said "that's just a big willy willy" ..... *sigh* It is great to get pictures like that up on the net!!!
