Hi everyone,

I have updated BSCH with my pictures from the Mary River flooding yesterday..

Believe it or not this flooding was classed as 'minor' ... i would love to get up there in a major flood..

The main floodwaters are now causing moderate flooding in the Tiaro area..

Also of note - the Bulloo and Paroo rivers in western QLD are now in flood - and it's quite a big one too, with major flooding from the Paroo river expected to effect towns such as Eulo and Hungerford over the next 3-7 days..

About midday I was lucky enough to see some hail!! yes thats right Hail!! Wasn't much to look at if you can think of the smallest hail you have seen and halve that, thats about the size of it :) As you can guess it didn't last very long on the ground, almost straight away it melted. The cloud it came from looked like the average winter type cloud, dark based with pretty crappy edges on it but one thing I did notice was at the rear of this cloud it seemed to be either rotating or rolling was kind of weird to look at probably because I haven't really took much notice of winter type clouds before. Now though I think I will be taking much more interest into winter seasons as I have learned that almost every year Adelaide has Cold air Tornadoes during frontal squalls. I learned this from the Bureau of Meteorology who were very helpful in answering my queries about tornadoes in South Australia. They gave me two booklets about cold air tornadoes and about a tornado which went through Adelaide in May,1965. very interesting reading, which also has maps, pictures, soundings, and damage description and atmospheric conditions at the time. Unfortunately no images of actual tornadoes. I told them of a picture we have of a 1935 tornado which touched down near Appila in the stated mid north, they seemed to be very interested and I will be supplying them with the reference to the book from which it came. One thing that caught my eye in one of the booklets was on the 12th of August 1992, during a severe squall that went over Adelaide, a tornado touched down no less than 1km from where we live now, which came as a shock to both Kathryn and myself. I think both of us were thinking DAMN!!!! wish we lived here then.... Out of the same line of squalls a tornado touched down a bit further north near Angaston. So some very interesting reading!! I can copy this information and put on a web page if anyone is interested in reading it. Anyway thats about the longest email I have sent to the list so I will leave it there. regards Andrew +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Sender: paisley at mail.cobweb.com.au Date: Thu, 4 May 2000 22:42:19 +0930 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Phil Bagust Subject: Re: aus-wx:some stuff on Adelaide tornadoes + cold front musings Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com >As you can guess it didn't last very long on the ground, almost straight >away it melted. I for one am convinced that if we just watch the clouds more, sightings will come! This is not a culture, particularly in the city, that watches the sky much - I'm sure that for every tornado that touches down there are dozens of funnels out there waiting to be bagged. *Now to the serious question*. I've noticed that in passages of good old fashioned STRONG cold fronts [all too rare lately], that the initial short, sharp storm, squall line/roll cloud, gust front, hail etc etc is often followed within half an hour by a clear, sunny 'slot' that can last for some time before the deep cold sector post frontal air starts dragging cold air CB's up from the south west. What's going on here? Is there a region of large scale subsidance immediately behind a frontal surface? Is it a matter of lower relative humidity? Some kind of jetstream action?? All theories will be read avidly......
