Today it still strikes me as remarkable that, for example, the 1700 Z ``Brisbane Broad Scale Radar'' can see high reflectivities over Gladstone, some 400 km N. MY rule-of-thumb understanding of beam altitude vs. distance tells me that the Brisbane radar beam should sample the stratosphere by the time it reaches the Gladstone coordinates. You're correct! Broad Scale is essentially a composite of local scale radars that are put together into one image. In the broad scale radars, there's a number on the bottom right hand side, to the right of the "512km" - that tells you how many local radars make up the broad, composite image. -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 May 2000 07:55:37 +1000 From: Anthony Cornelius X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.72 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: Granada TV interview Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Michael, Wow, you were in a way lucky that the entire process did not take very long! Channel 9 spend five and a half hours with me - I was surprised at the amount of work that has to be put in (it made me think that actors do have to work quite hard, and what they do is quite frustrating at times). It certainly is difficult being on camera...you suddenly become quite self-conscious of yourself! Meanwhile, I've been able to evade a small late-fine at the video store because the person there saw me on TV, and I'm now called "Storm Man" everytime I walk into the local newsagency down the road. It's rather embarrassing :-( Fortunately, my efforts to prevent the taped segment of me have succeeded in preventing it being sent past the QLD borders :-) Granada TV contacted me, and got a fair bit of information out of me, but it seemed once I gave them all the information on storms they needed - I never heard from them again. When you click on broad scale, it gives you a composite image of other broad scale radars in the area. It then uses an algorithm, and normally assigns the closest region to a radar, that reflectivity. It would be rather useful if they were able to add in where the radars were located though. So you'd know if a storm was weakening on radar because it was moving from good radar coverage, to poorer radar coverage, or if it's really weakening. 'Love bug 2' is again email based, this time in the form of an email with a joke attachment. Experts believe the new variant has been devised by a "copycat" programmer using the ILOVEYOU virus as a model. Love Bug 2 works in the same way, rapidly multiplying by sending itself to all those listed in a user's email address book. The email uses the comparatively common subject header: "fwd: Joke". It contains no text but an attachment called "very funny.vbs", which, if downloaded, triggers the damaging virus. The original virus appears in emails as "ILOVEYOU", enticing users to open the message, only to paralyse their e-mail systems. One of its variants uses the phrase "fw: joke" in the subject line. Another has a subject line that reads "Susitikim shi vakara kavas puodukui...", which is Lithuanian for "Let's meet this evening for coffee...". +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Sender: jdeguara at pop.ihug.com.au X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.2.2 Date: Sat, 06 May 2000 13:46:41 +1000 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Jimmy Deguara Subject: Re: aus-wx: SUMMARY: March TC Summary - Part 1 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Carl, Jimmy Deguara here. It is unlikely that I have been infected with any of the current run of viruses, as I use an old Mac IIsi running OS 7.5.3, and do not use any Microsoft products. It seems that Windows is the preferred Virus platform and MS Outlook Express / MS Internet Explorer / mIRC are the prefered Virus programs. I have just done a virus scan which came up clean, but is possible that someone has released a Mac virus that so far avoids detection by my anti-virus software, so if there are any further indications that I have somehow picked up one of these, please let me know immediately, with details of which email(s) it was found with, and I will try to track it down. No attachments have been on any of the emails I have sent Aus-Wx, at least they are not visible in my Out box. My computer is behaving normally, and there have been no mass mailings. It is possible that someone elses script may have been inadvertantly included in the body of a copied and pasted message, although I usually check for odd coding when I forward stuff that way and have not noticed any with coding other than the script detailing the LOVE BUG virus included in: Fri, 5 May 2000 01:59:47 +1000 aus-wx: VIRUS INFO: "i love you" complete english virus info. This script, which may be useful to those trying to debug infected computers, may have alerted David's anti-virus software, which means that said software is indeed doing it's job of looking for suspicious material, as scripts are not normally included in emails. Thankfully, I have not seen any 'I LOVE YOU' (or similar), 'MOTHERSDAY' (or similar), or 'JOKE' (or similar) messages on Aus-Wx or any of the other lists I am on. If I was to see a sudden rush of these I would be very suspicious! Regards, Carl. >Hi Carl, > >Jimmy Deguara here. I am wondering if you know that you may have the virus >on your computer. That's OK, viruses are a very public issue, and any possibility of infection is important enough to notify and communicate about in the public arena. >This virus alert says something: I have no virus scan software and have a >habit of not opening ANY attachments what soever. Good habit, however I regularly recieve cyclone image attachments, and must remain vigilant! (-: Good thing I use a Mac :-) Please note that there have been (fortunately rare) cases of virus triggers in HTML format in the body of emails that activate when you click on an included URL. I would recommend that you consider installing some form of anti-virus software, as my feeling is that the virus problem is going to increase, and attacks could become more sophisticated. All AWSA members ( and others ) should be aware that this may become more of an occurrence, especially as we get more footage, last year was a dud and yet the end of year chase had supercells in Queensland. Stretching from Rockhampton in the North, to the Southern Ocean in the South, the Bight in the West and the Tasman in the East. It loads a lot quicker than the full Eastern Australian Animation. Like the Eastern Australia animation it is updated hourly (usually 20 past the hour). You can check it out here http://members.xoom.com/nsykes/vicanimation.htm or use the links from the main page http://seaustraliasatpics.virtualave.net/ In the near future a NE Australia animation will be added and I have plans for adding a Western Australian animation.
