January, you'll recall, had some extraordinary rainfall in Western Australia. The postal returns more than treble the size of the daily rainfall network, and point out some interesting local-scale events that get lost between the daily reporting station grid. Some examples: Elliott Heads, on the coast E of Bundaberg, had 181mm for the 24 hours to 9 on 3/1/00 in the big storm that hit the area on the 2nd. Blueberry Cottage, Grey, on Tassie's E coast, had 182mm 24h to 9 on 5/1/00 and 160.2 on 27/1/00. Delta Station, about 200km north of Laverton WA, had 140mm on the 15th, and according to the quality controlled record, 120 on the 20th! "Maplewood", Guy Fawkes, on the eastern NSW Northern Tablelands, had 85mm to 9am on 17/1/00. This was the day of the Warwick storm, with earlier activity at Barraba, Inverell and Narrabri, but nowhere received anything like this much rain *before* 9am. Anyway, the January news pages are worth a visit for rainfall enthusiasts. -- Laurier Williams Australian Weather News & Links http://ausweather.simplenet.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: Malcolm Ninnes To: "'aussie-weather at world.std.com'" Subject: aus-wx: RE: TV interview Date: Mon, 8 May 2000 13:31:37 +1000 X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2448.0) Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com >From Anthony Cornelius: > Fortunately, my efforts to prevent the taped segment of me have > succeeded in preventing it being sent past the QLD borders :-) That's what _you_ think :) All NSW ASWA people, I have an interesting video to show at the next meeting :))) Mal. > Granada TV contacted me, and got a fair bit of information out of me, > but it seemed once I gave them all the information on storms they needed > - I never heard from them again. > > Michael Thompson wrote: > > -- > Anthony Cornelius > Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association > (ASWA) > (07) 3390 4812 > 14 Kinsella St > Belmont, Brisbane > QLD, 4153 > Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm > reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at > http://www.severeweather.asn.au > +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ > To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com > with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your > message. > -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ > +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Sender: disarm at mail.braenet.com.au X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Pro Version 3.0 (32) Date: Mon, 08 May 2000 13:50:58 +1000 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Matt Smith Subject: Re: aus-wx: RE: TV interview Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com WOOHOO You got it !!! well done Mal, I was hoping you would get your hands on it for this meeting :) Matt Smith >From Anthony Cornelius: > > > >> Fortunately, my efforts to prevent the taped segment of me have >> succeeded in preventing it being sent past the QLD borders :-) > >That's what _you_ think :) > >All NSW ASWA people, I have an interesting video to show at the next meeting >:))) > > >Mal. > > > > > >> Granada TV contacted me, and got a fair bit of information out of me, >> but it seemed once I gave them all the information on storms they needed >> - I never heard from them again. >> >> Michael Thompson wrote: >> >> -- >> Anthony Cornelius >> Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association >> (ASWA) >> (07) 3390 4812 >> 14 Kinsella St >> Belmont, Brisbane >> QLD, 4153 >> Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm >> reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at >> http://www.severeweather.asn.au >> +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ >> To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com >> with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your >> message. >> -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ >> > +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ > To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com > with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your > message. > -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ > > +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 May 2000 13:44:05 +1000 From: Anthony Cornelius X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.72 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: RE: TV interview Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Malcolm - a word of advice, next time there's an unmarked parcel in front of the door...make sure you don't open it near others. The UKMO run is particularly interesting from my point of view, as it has a 988 hPa low centred south of Kangaroo Island on Friday night - which could make life interesting on the coast of the Coorong in South Australia, which is where I'll be on Saturday morning.... The ECMWF has a more classical cold outbreak on Saturday. Interestingly, the middle Saturday of May was also when we got last year's one cold outbreak worthy of the name. There has not been a day with a maximum temperature below the 5 percentile level (something that would normally be expected on 1 day in 20) since. GASP has an amorphous mess lingering over the whole SE Australian region through the weekend. It will be interesting to see how things develop. The next NSW ASWA meeting will be held on Saturday 13th May beginning around 6:30am. The following are the details: Date: Saturday 13th May Time: 6:30am Address: Weather 21 7 West St North Sydney This is our new venue, thanks to the offer of Mark Hardy. Now, it seems that there is a lot of enthusiasm about this new venue. But there obviously will be changes in the format of the meeting. The meeting will have a little more structure and I am going to try encourage people within and outside of ASWA to give presentations. But don't get too worried, not too many changes will occur and there will be ample time to talk and so on. There is not much in the way of limits on time as Saturday night is much quieter in Weather21. I am sure Mark Hardy or someone on staff (Paul Graham??) will be able to give a tour of the excellent resources they have available. For this meeting, Daniel Weatherhead will be give a presentation on weather photography which I am looking forward to. Malcom Ninnes will be presenting the program. If there are any footage on the night, we can view them after the main meeting and presentation takes place. I have a little footage of the night time lightning well off the coast of the Ulladulla event. I would suggest people bring resources such as photographs, reports and so on. I have noticed some people hold back because they think their photographs are not good enough... Please. Bring them along anything weather related is welcome. We also will spend a little time discussing the AGM to get some more needed feedback. In terms of dinner, we will discuss things there. We will see what is available. There is a kitchen there but we will have to provide our own stuff. The difference is that we cannot lounge around the way we normally do. We must make sure that the dishes and cups etc are put into the dishwasher.... The place has to be kept clean which has not been a problem. I really hope to see a lot of people there. Both visitors and members are always welcome. Again, if you feel you are shy don't worry, one meeting and you will feel as much a part as if you were there for years. Also, for the epicures among you, Crows Nest (a short walk up the road) has the highest density of restaurants in Sydney - and some excellent ones at that. I will be meeting up with Darren Heys for some storm talk about an hour b4 at Bravo's (on Falcon Street near the Pacific Hwy intersection...next to Woolworths) which has nice pasta and gelato. Anyone else feel free to meet us there as the venue is only about a 10' stroll away. It now has a 1000/500hPa thickness cold pool of 538 south of Kanga Island Sunday morning, moving to southern Qld by Monday am and weakening only to 540. By Monday morning it has an 850hPa temperature of 4 or less over all of the mainland south of a line from Gabo to Armidale to Alice Springs to Perth, yet the coldest is only ~0, and that's in SW Qld! The latest MRF has a more dramatic scenario, with the 534 thickness line pushed right up into central NSW, and a marked 500hPa cold pool of about -35 (!!!) sitting on Echuca. NOGAPS and EC are less spectacular, but all the models are suggesting a major cold outbreak on Sunday/Monday, and, although this is still 7 days out, they're remarkably consistent in timing and the general development.
