Anyway, the weather has gone back to boring over here in Christchurch. I think that Auckland is going to get the most out of the current weather from the low that is moving onto the North Island. However this WE, a colder airflow this WE should produce wintry conditions here if that high intensifies according to the models near Tasmania. We haven't had, yet, the harsh conditions that you have been experiencing over there in the east of Australia as these systems move east over the "The Ditch" towards us. Wellington recorded 522 lightning 'hits' over the 36 hr period on 2/3rd June in unstable NW that passed over that region. Intense hailstorms were reported plus tornadoes near Nelson on the 1st. It was about 9C at my house at 7:30pm last night.. I live on a hill and I went for a walk down into a little valley and it was already 6C there at 7:30pm!!! There is also a soccer field close by so I went there and the air temp was 6C. Then I put my thermometer sensor on the grass and it was -1.5C!!!!!!! There was no frost at this stage since the DP was still too low for any dew or frost to form!! But I decided to leave some water in an Ice cream container on the ground overnight. (I put about 400ml of water into a 2L container).. Anyway this morning I had a min of 5.1C here.. But a few streets away it was about 1C to 2C (in little valleys).. I then went to the soccer field and it was white! Frost! But only very thin layers. It was about 2.5C air temp over the field but the ground was at about -3C!! About 1/4 of the water in the ice cream container actually froze!!! +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Jun 2000 08:19:48 +1000 From: Anthony Cornelius X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.72 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: Cold night in Brisbane!!! And this weekend? Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Paul! Wow - that's incredible!!! (About the water freezing!) It certainly was cold here too - more so after I decided to do some thermometer moving of my own (in line with everyone elses experiments :) I normally have the thermometer hanging from the eave of the house outside my bedroom window - it's often been a little warmer then it should be, especially if there's no wind. While walking along the footpath beside the house trying to work out where the best place to put it was, I also noticed that the right side of me (closest to the house) was warm, where as the left side of me (away from the house) was cold...so no doubt the house emits a reasonable amount of heat. I hung the thermometer over the clothesline, and let it dangle at about 5ft (1.5m) off the ground. Within five minutes, the temperature had dropped from 10.7C to 8.8C! By 9pm, the temperature had dropped further to 7.1C! I was hoping I would get a new record low for the house (previously being 5.6C), but a light breeze came up, and the temperature increased to 8.6C over 30-40mins :-( Even by the time I went stopped reading and went to sleep (1:15am), it had only fallen to 7.9C At this stage I took the alarm off 5:30am, as I knew there'd be no frost here :-( I'm planning to eventually build a Stevenson Screen so that I can take more accurate measurements, and then my mins/maxes will actually mean something. But it'll take a while before I get around to that! Interesting scenario possible over this week-end, for a while now it's been looking like the high will move further south and sit over Vic, and push SE'lies over us. But this should co-incide with an upper level trough sitting over QLD. Such an upper level trough may allow the jet to arc in such a way that'll it'll sit quite narrowly in a NW to SE component, and cause some vorticity - perhaps an upper level cutoff low? Anyay, if we the air gets cold enough over us, we might get some hail mixed in with showers. The BoM are forecasting a 16C max for us on Saturday! Anyone else have any thoughts? Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Evening all, Would I be simplifying things too much if I thought that we have a near stationary area of high pressure around the Bight, southern SA area. Having looked at the 3pm charts and the two forecast charts on the BoM's weather warnings page for most days in the past near 2 weeks, it almost seems as if the centre of the high moves in a circular pattern around this area, but never truly leaves. This has seen predominantly SW'ers over at least the Illawarra region, with only small intervals of NW before the next cold air mass moves through. As Michael will attest, things are getting pretty dry down here, and being ignorant of records I would say it certainly feels colder over this last period than I remember it being in past seasons around this time. Anyway, probably not a true observation, but if it is the snow hounds will be howling in delight at the start to the season, and would love the current cold air regime to continue. And this weekend? Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com I've been watching the 7-day forecast charts with great interest. This looks like a classic June scenario with a high in Bass Strait or over Tasmania and an upper trough over Queensland. The Brisbane BoM is going for local moderate to heavy falls and the Sydney BoM is going for patchy rain in the northeast of NSW and showers further south along the coast, for the weekend. Only GASP has the high nearer Tassie, the other 2 I looked at have it over Victoria. Given the dry spell along the NSW coast in recent months ,on the balance of probability I would say the GASP model will be the one that eventuates. As usual, time will tell...
