I believe the farthest north that snow has been reported in Queensland (and Australia) is the Clarke Range, which runs from southwest to northwest of Mackay at about 21S and about 300km north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The date was 19 July 1965, when snow fell over much of the area from the Bunya Mountains in the east and beyond the Maranoa River in the west, northwards to the upper Warrego catchment NE of Charleville and across to within 60km of the coast in the Eungella National Park west of Mackay. It was the most widespread fall in Queensland history, with snow falling for the only recorded time to date at many locations. The same event gave much of eastern NSW heavy snow, also for the only recorded time in some locations. The snowfall at Eungella occurred just on dusk in the Dalrymple Heights area, around 700 metres a.s.l. and didn't settle. The heaviest falls were in an area from Chinchilla, Surat and Mungallala in the south to Wondoan and Injune in the north where snow fell for up to 3 hours between sunrise and noon. Snowflakes 2cm in diameter were seen in Surat, and drifts to 5cm were reported out of the town. In Roma, snow fell for half an hour just before midday with a temperature of 2 degrees, settling briefly on the ground in town but lying for around an hour in the nearby country. Northwards at Injune, snow lay down to 700m, persisting for a day in sheltered places. Farther northwest, snow fell for up to an hour in the Drummond Range just south of the Tropic of Capricorn, from Bogantungan west to Alpha and Jericho and southwest almost to Tambo. Information for the above is from Bureau Notes on the Weather and weather reviews, press research by Don White and my own data collection. I have seen a report of snow falling in the Cloncurry area early this century, though melting on reaching the ground. I don't have a date or any other information. Cloncurry is at 20.7S, so if verified this would have to be a contender for farthest north snow, though with an altitude of 200m it sounds dubious. Best chase ever!! Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Well this is the email ive always wanted to post to the list. Ill do a full report soon but basiclly i chased most of the day today and saw 3 tornadoes just north of Perth. Two were from the same storm but in different spots. One touched down as the other sort of started but they were never both on the ground at the same time. Both never really got going that great and lasted maybe 5mins each. One was skinny and the condenastion funnel didnt reach he ground but there was a distinct vorticy on the ground that could be seen by the dust. The other one was better and lasted longer. After they went back up i went like the clappers to get closer as i was a fair distance from them, approx 20k's (im confident that the pics will show them well tho) and just about got lost in all the rain and crap. I kept getting climpses of the storm through trees etc. I came up over a ridge and there was a nader down on the ground no more than 3 or 4k's away. God it was sooooooooo big, it filled the whole sky. It was down over dry fields as we havent had much rain so far this year and the funnel was full of dark brown dust which gave it a kewl colour. Rotation was very slow, and it did look weakish, an F-0 i think. It was moving left to right in front of me. I quickly stopped, banged off one really good shot and one crappy one i think, i had to change films and it dissipated. All up i think i got about 10 pics of them all. Could have got more maybe but geeze they are just so awesome to watch close up. I cant even begin to fathom what its like to get a chase like Rals did in the US with F-5's down on the ground, my brain hurts just thinking about it. To see one was great but i never imagined in my wildest dreams i would see 3 in one day. Oh well pics will be ASAP, ill post em to the list when i get them back. Today was the day Ive waited for so long, i cant believe its actually happened. I know that you've been out chasing for many years, and a lot longer then other people, so it's great that finally such a great day has come upon you! I can't wait for the report and photos!!! The rest of the film better be used up soon, and those photos developed or there'll be trouble! This will make a great discussion at WA's meeting on July 1st!!! People will be insane to miss it! :) Even though I'm 4000km away, I'm equally excited as to if three tornadoes were to be reported by a chaser in QLD. I think it's great to see everyone involved in ASWA too, as no doubt it gives us an opportunity to discuss topics, and share each others experiences and photos. Which may not seem much to some people, but means the world to me! I'm sure many other people are equally exicted about your phenomenal chase Ira! It makes you wonder how many other days are like this. One year, I'd like to visit SW WA in winter, and visit Australia's tornado capital :-) Anthony Cornelius Ira Fehlberg wrote: > > Well this is the email ive always wanted to post to the list. > > Ill do a full report soon but basiclly i chased most of the day today and > saw 3 tornadoes just north of Perth. Well done on you absolutely fantastic chase day. You have accomplished something that most of us in ASWA have always dreamed about. I am yet to see an actual tornado, and I hope I do soon. Miraculous stories such as yours enspire many of us to get off our buts and chase like there was no tomorrow. Unfortunately, due to the typical atmospheric unpredictability, you have to be in the right place at the right time. In this case, you were fortunate enough to be. I eagerly await your report and accompanying photos. I believe this is a day that should be celebrated and again congratulations on such a great day. How much of an effect does the temperature or moisture content of the air column have on its 'weight'? However, I'll give it a stab from basic physics but excuse any mistakes...its 11:30pm after a long day of studying :P OK, weight is actually a force. I am not sure whether you are referring to weight as such or mass. You must work out the weight to find the mass anyway, so here goes... Pressure=Force(Weight) ___________ Area Therefore, Weight = Area x Pressure To make things work simply, it is necessary to change everything into kilograms, metres and seconds etc ie SI units. 1000hPa = 100000Pa = 1 x 10^5Pa 1 square cm = 10^-4 square metres Therefore, we can find the weight to be 10^5 x 10^-4 = 10N (the unit is newtons because we are looking at a force) Now, Force = mass x acceleration In this case, acceleration = gravity = 10m/s^2 roughly(to make calculations easy!) Therefore, Mass = 10/10 which very conveniently gives us 1kg of air over each square centimetre. Part 2 simply involves repeating the calculation for 1040hPa and you simply find the mass becomes 1.04kg. This represents a 4% increase in mass, which although not noticeable to you or I, is still quite significant in the scheme of things eg leading to stronger geostrophic wind forces due to pressure gradients being greater. For the final part, water vapour is responsible for approximately 0.01% of the mass of the entire atmosphere, so any fluctuations in its concentration(humidity) will have no meaningful effect on the mass of the atmosphere. Hope this has been of some help to you, and not bored everyone to sleep, Matthew Pearce -----Original Message----- From: MSC To: Aussie-wx Date: Tuesday, 20 June 2000 9:26 Subject: aus-wx: Weight of a column of air >Ok, all you physics geniuses (of which I'm not one) , > >How much 'weight' per square cm is exerted at sea level by a column of >air with a surface pressure of 1000hPa? > >So, having established this, how much *more* 'weight' would a column of >air with a surface presssure of 1040hPa have? > >How much of an effect does the temperature or moisture content of the >air column have on its 'weight'? > >Many thanks, > >Jane > >-------------------------------- >Jane ONeill >cadence at rubix.net.au > >Melbourne Storm Chasers >http://www.rubix.net.au/~cadence >soon to be >http://www.stormchasers.au.com > >ASWA - Victoria >http://www.severeweather.asn.au > >-------------------------------- > +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ > To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com > with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your > message. > -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ > +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------
