This mailing list sure is a great source of info and I'd like to take the humble pleasure to thank everyone for the input. I'll be returning to Adelaide pretty soon however right now I'm sitting in my apartment in Kokura which is located in the north of Kyushu, the southern largest isle of the Japanese archipelago. As I type we are experiencing the north eastern drift of the rainy season frount which sets in for about one month every year at this time. The weather bureau keeps on putting out lightening warnings but I have yet to spot or hear a single bolt (this year). Right now though we are getting medium-heavy rain, I'd guess about 10mm/hr, nothing special though as this area gets around 2,000mm annual precipitation. Noticed this one as well - tied in with the California heatwave discussed elsewhere. It seems to have been reasonably well confined to California - Phoenix only got to 43, which is only about 3-4 above average for them. Also worth noting that, as in southern Australia, although mean temperatures peak in mid- to late summer, extremes peak a little earlier. The last two major heatwaves in that region, 1990 (50 in Phoenix) and 1994 (several state records broken and 53.3 in western Arizona), were both in late June/early July. The Death Valley record is allegedly 56.7, but this is widely regarded as dodgy; somewhere in the 53-55 range is probably more realistic. What's your source for it being the highest temperature in the world for 3 or 4 years? (The reason I ask is that the mean monthly temperatures in much of the Sahara in July 1998 were significantly above the already monumental averages, and the mean monthly max for that month at In Salah, Algeria was about 49 - I don't have any daily data but would have thought that if the average was that high then there's a fair chance it would have got above 52.2 on at least one day during the month). Unfortunately, a spot check of BoM metadata on the net (at ftp://ftp.bom.gov.au/anon2/home/ncc/metadata) shows it hasn't been updated since 1997 -- a pity, as it could be a useful communications device to flag the progress of increased data availability for users. There's a major long-term project in progress here to back-process historical data, but this is very slow work (for a station that goes back into the late 19th century, you're looking at probably 0.3 - 0.5 person-years per station); our original target was to do 50 stations by the end of 2001-02. I'm not sure when this data will be released to the outside world. I'll be pleasantly surprised if the entire backlog is cleared before I retire, and I'm 28 :-) The WA data was done as part of a separate project (I think in conjunction with their Department of Agriculture, but don't quote me) and covers temperatures only. There are also small snippets lying around elsewhere that aren't in the Bureau database, such as the seven NSW stations that I did during my PhD work, and another small set that was used in a frost study in the mid-1990s, which have found their way onto my web pages. DP sat in the mid-high teens, and a beautiful NE'ly breeze throughout the day, freshening slightly in the afternoon. Not to mention nice precipitating TCU to the WSW (visible from my exam room). Brisbane AP, Brisbane and Amberly all recorded 26C, Gold Coast did the best with 28C There were a few Cb's about yesterday (again stopped from chasing due to exam/study committments grrr), with some of the cells punching into the 40-100 range, not bad!!! Currently it's 19.8C here, with a DP of about 17C. -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Originating-IP: [210.8.232.2] From: "Patrick Tobin" To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: NSW STA Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 00:33:08 PDT Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Nice to see the following warning issued - not a very common occurence in this area this close to the Winter solstice!! Today's soundings for Wagga certainly showed some good potential - but in mid-winter you don't expect to see to much develop away from the coast. This would seem to be in relation to the northward extension of the nice line currently moving across Victoria. The pea size hail lasted 2 - 3 min and then was washed away in further rain. The evening ahead looks interesting with the radar showing the NNW- SSE aligned band thickening to the west and maintaining its organisation (and hopefully intensity). Well an interesting end to the evening. About 15 minutes ago we just were hit with very heavy rain and gusty winds.
It looks like there could be some good falls and maybe some thunder headed for Sydney metro this evening/ morning. The radar which hadn't updated since 9:40 recently updated and went from patchy rain to a line with yellow and green from Lithgow to Waterfall. It has continued to bucket down here. More to follow maybe....

Hey peoples,

I was in Kyneton doing an audit today and was lucky enough to be in a tin-roofed building when things got interesting.  Well let me start from the start.  We got there at 8:30 this morning and visibilty was just 30m in the fog/Strato Cu which lasted until 1pm (it was pretty cold after leaving Melbourne in beautiful sunshine with some Accas and accompanying virga) .  It finally cleared up and the sun came out for a while.  The whole time I was inside trying to concentrate on my work but I'd been watching this system for a few days on the charts and was pretty interested in it.  Anyway, at about 4:18pm the rain started and was heavy from the onset.  Gusty winds accompained it and by 4:20pm it was hailing.  I jumped up and went to the window to see hail between 0.3 and 1.0cm falling pretty intensely.  Two fairly close claps of thunder were heard in the next few minutes while the hail/rain eased.  Winds (at a guess) got to about 25knts but all in all I think I missed the worst of it.

After looking at the radar tonight I thnk things may've been more interesting elsewhere in the state (further E) - especially where a cell formed ahead of the line and was then overtaken and embedded in the line somewhere down near Yea.  I think the combination of outflow and inflow (outflow from the other cell) could've made things very interesting.  I have relatives living in Yea so if anything interesting occurred in the area they will surely fill me in on the details.

I think Melbourneites could see some more storms later tonight with a few cold air CB's entering the WNW of the state ATM and more storms forecast for later tomorrow afternoon/evening.  Keep the eyes open!!

Peter Matters - One of the evil laws of storm chasing is that when the battery isn't charged, the sky surely will be....these things can't be helped.

Jane - Claire and I will be at the meeting...slightly hungover but depending on Tennis/Claire's work comittments means we may have to leave a little earlier.

Ira - Once again congratulations - can't wait for the photo's.

One more thing - this system has produced severe weather in four different states....this is pretty impressive considering it is a winter system (which are generally so tempremental that they peak in one state and dissipate before it reaches the next state).

Oh - one last thing - my uncle from Corowa (W of Albury) reported a fair few CC's but not much rain from up his way tonight.

Chris G. - got your message tonight once I was back in phone range - see ya saturday.

That'll do me for now.
