Hello all once again,
Well, what an exciting day it has been for Victorian's and NSW residents. The passing of the cold front produced a number of cold air Cb's and a few significant severe thunderstorms. One of which is of most significance at this time. Although stated ealier in a previous posting that a tornado occured in Cobram, the tornado actually took place in the north-eastern Victorian town of Rochester (short distance from Echuca) wreaking havoc to the neighbouring town of Kyabram in the early afternoon. According to witnesses, the tornado literally "sucked" out the walls off their houses and threw their roofs off and deposited them some distance away. Again, as stated ealier, it is too early to make any conclusions or assumption on this event. Hopefully, if all goes well, I will be travelling up to the area to inspect the damage path and to document the damage on Saturday (hopefully it's not too late). Hopefully some more factual evidence may "pop-up" between now and then.
On a somewhat related topic, the media has surprisingly reported this occurences very well. Taking into consideration past documentation on tornado occurences, or lack thereof, this tornado was actually on every news program I have viewed and numerous radio stations. Although some reporters still address the tornado as the infamous "mini-tornado", it is great to see that the public is finally beginning to see the existence of tornadoes in Australia.
Fortunately, this tornado did not strike in a well populated location. However, in this rural community with a significant population figure, the threat of tornadoes maybe taken into consideration in the near future. If so, this may give rise to the expansion and reputational increase of ASWA throughout the country.

The drama happened in the small Victorian town of Fairy Dell. All were injued by flying debris and taken to Echuca Hospital. Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Scott Williams said: "Cold unstable air combined with the right wind shear conditions could have spawned the tornado." Hey Dean
This site here has archives of the austIR, VIS and WV images for at least the 24hrs prior check it out :)
There are some ASWA members on the list that archive certain radars around the country, Anthony Cornelius from QLD might be able to help you out there. :)

Wednesday afternoon/evening saw a very well defined squall line (possibly a derecho - still debating this) which produced damaging straight-line winds in several North-Central, Northern and North Eastern towns. Seymour, Yea, Benalla, Wangaratta, Albury and numerous other places reported damage from the squall line and as informed by my dad, one of the pub's in Cobram was severely damaged (it was a tragedy as they had to close it for the night - hehehe). This is probably where the reports from Cobram came from. My uncle who lives in Corowa was listening to his scanner and CB radio and he heard reports of damage in a few of the smaller towns around the Albury area....(he said he heard reports of trees down, large rocks on roofs, large rocks on roads....). Yesterday, an extremely isolated storm developed in the western half of the North-Central district sometime during the afternoon. I was informed by my dad at 5pm that there was an awesome looking anvil up to the NW and I was fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of it from my train at about 5:40pm (in the last of the fast fading light). I was lucky enough to catch the Ch 9 weather at 6:30pm and they had the radar loop on and the cell was, as I mentioned earlier, very isolated, but the interesting thing was that its echo's were light blue (2-10mm/h). It will be interesting to see what the BoM reports (assuming they are conducting an investigation). I would be interested to hear what sort of conditions prevailed before and after the event (ie any lightning?, any hail?, wind direction before and after, etc). Dean - are you heading up with someone from the BoM? This event so far: 4 tornadoes, 1 severe squall line. Not too bad for a winter system which started on Sunday night in WA. They (BoM) are doing a damage path today complete with pics etc etc. The extent of ASWA Victoria's involvement in situations like this both now & in the future is an agenda item for discussion at our meeting tomorrow morning. I have put a message up on the MSC June page requesting that information about the event be emailed to me ASAP so that I can send it on to the BoM, & I have also emailed the ASWA members living in that part of Victoria for any help that they can give us. The papers are also interested in sharing (both ways ) any information that may come to hand. I will have an enhanced satellite image (22/06/2000 06Z) which should be available later today. One cell went north-east about 20 kms. north of Wycheproof while a much darker storm went south-east about the same distance south of Wycheproof. The southernmost cell had a well-defined gust front and seemed a very structured storm. I'm wondering whether this southern cell was the one which later struck near Rochester, and whether the apparent divergence of the two cells is relevant? It appears the BoM have not yet established an investigation team so it doesn't appear that I will be at the present. I have organised a conversation via phone with Harvey Stern later today where I will discuss with him if a team will be put in operation and whether I can accompany them. Hello Andrew and all once again,
I have been speaking to Harvey Stern from the Melbourne BoM VRO and the Severe Storm Section. They have informed me that they are currently in Rochester investigating the tornado damage path and preparing a full official report which should be published in the near future. In conjunction with the BoM investigation, they have invited me to assist the severe Wx Section with this investigation. The collaboration of reports will be used to identify and dismiss any discrepancies that have been made thus far. I shall inform the list of any progress I make.

I'm on a dial-up connection, which restricts my downloading capabilities, this combined with a few ISP problems in the last 2 weeks. I haven't complained though, because while they're turning a blind eye to my ~3gig/month downloads, I thought I'd do the same to them. I finally get cable fully installed this Tuesday, then the amount I download is merely a matter of how much I'm willing to invest in storing it (CD), and the time. Off the top of my head, I'm archiving the following: Cairns B, Gladstone B, Gympie L, Brisbane B/L, Charleville B, Longreach B, Wagga B, Grafton L, Moree B/L, Sydney B/L, Williamtown L, Melbourne B/L, Mt Gambie B/L, NW Tas B, Adelaide B/L, Perth B/L, and an assortment of radars along the Nullabor and SW WA (almost all of them I believe). I also archive: GSMC/D, AU IR, AU WV, JCU, the MB and VB sat pics of far eastern AU and the MSLA. I haven't told everyone formally yet, as I didn't want to dissapoint people if I didn't have the requested radar/sat pic due to it not being archived, or my ISP inadvertently disconnecting me. I'm planning on running an extraction to get radar/sats for Ira's tornadoes (which I might say are BRILLIANT photos!) And also the recent event at Rochester. I'll also try and grab some FNL data from NOAA too, that might be interesting. I haven't had a chance to extract anything yet, due to exams - but fortunately, I had my last one today and I'm now on holidays :-))) -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Dean Sgarbossa" To: "Aussie Wx Mailing List" Subject: aus-wx: Rochester Tornado Investigation Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2000 18:30:27 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.72.2106.4 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com
Hello everyone again,
I just concluded a number of phone calls. The first of which included the conversation with Daniel Hoy, a journalist from the Melbourne Herald Sun who wrote one of the articles in todays paper. He informed me that the destruction path is quite prominent; there are six houses severely damaged along George Street in Fairy Dell. Another phone call was to the local Rangers Office. They informed me of the apparent damage path starting at Gegliam Road, Nanneella heading in a northeasterly direction towards Geaorge Street, Kyabram. The destruction is supposedly very obvious and easy to follow. I may be interviewing the Merrett family, the family who were "sucked" out of there house and depositted in a nearby field. I will also be interviewing David Hanson, the neighbour of the Merrett family in Fairy Dell who observed the tornado while milking his cows. He took cover under his large milk vat when the tornado passed within 30 metres of him. I will also be interviewing Mr. Wallace and his son who also observed the tornado as well as Garry Colemen who observed the tornado.
I am eagerly awaiting this trip and I will post my findings tomorrow night or Sunday.

Pretty cold here too in Blackheath, around 5, think we only got to 6 although I haven't checked yet. Those pics are excellent. Number 3 seems to have picked up a fair bit of dust as you suggested. Did you get a chance to inspect the paths or was it the usual - no roads.
