Hi Everyone,

Well i've had my eye on Monday for a couple of days now, but was a bit concerned about too much moisture/cloud and rain... but AVN is realy starting too look quite nice now, with a large area of low (down to -6 last time i looked) LI's in NE NSW and parts of SE QLD and less mid level moisture - the lowest area of LI's is shifting around in each forecast as usual, but in general it's looking realy nice!!!

The western horizon looks great at the moment - not much cloud and some summery looking convection popping up!

Anthony Cornelius and myself will more than likely be chasing - if anyone else in Brisbane wants to join us you are more than welcome!

BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The temperatures are quite mild to warm in NNSW and S Qld and with signifacant cold air coming through, it should be interesting. Hail is obviously on the cards but if you can chase in the right lines as the series of cold fronts come through, you can get significant storms along those lines. The wind shear is ok but I would have liked a lot of directional wind shear in the lower layers. David Croan and myself may chase so we shall reassess the situation again tonight. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com hi everyone, Well what a good day I had, I had originally gone up north to checkout the clouds, rain etc... I was about 10km NW of Port Wakefield taking photographs of a nice rain curtain and large Cu, when I decided to head back home. I travelled back towards PW and came around a corner to be face to face with a nice looking funnel coming down from the back end of the Cu I was just taking pictures of. I threw the brakes on sliding the car in sideways to a halt :) I jumped out of the car with camera in hand, snapped off about 5 shots before deciding to try and get closer, I went down the road a little further and jumped out again, taking another few shots then decided to get closer again :) Travelled a little further finding a road that was headed in the general direction of the funnel. Not a very smart move, the roads were very boggy and I had to try and keep the speed up to get through the mud. I found a pretty good spot although the funnel was still moving away from me, but I had a good view below it, to see if there was anything being kicked up. I had the Binoculars on it but couldn't see anything on the ground so I decided to toss the bino's and keep snapping shots off. I used the whole roll (only about 15 or so shots) before running out, I changed films, but by the time I looked up again it was only a very small rope which wouldn't have come out on film. This was my first Funnel that I have observed myself, I was so excited :) I am getting the photo's developed tomorrow, so hopefully they turn out okay, I didn't have a zoom lense so the funnel might look kinda small :( I will see if the developer can enlarge some of them. ragards a very happy Andrew +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2000 17:36:35 +1000 From: Anthony Cornelius X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.72 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: SE QLD/NE NSW Storms?!? Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, Tomorrow is looking interesting - especially with todays setup! Was nice and warm, with N'ly winds. Brisbane AP's max was surprisingly a little low, (22C), but the Brisbane site recorded 24C, which would actually be more representative of what was about. At the farm this morning, there was nice fog in the vallies, and ACCAS to the NW and SW. Todat some very nice CJ's developed to the south...and in between family commitments even spotted a small storm! Some very nice storms near Moree (max intensity) too. Some very nice 500mb temps (-20/-21C) for us...which is quite rare as we normally only get those with SW winds...not N'ly winds! So that works in our favour. As Jimmy mentioned, there's not much directional shear, typical of a NW'ly jet. A small increase in cloud on IR, and increase + shift of WV has caught my intention, with the possibility of rain/cloud still on the cards - the low LI will most probably coincide with rain/cloud, so it'll be a little tricky to pin-point. Unfortunately, there's only room for two people in my car (driver & passenger). As some of you know, I got rear-ended a couple of weeks ago, and it's not being fixed until Tuesday. When I got rear-ended, some of the catches on the seat came loose/broke and I have to have stuff in the back seat legroom (jerry can did the trick nicely!) to prop the seat up and prevent it from falling back each time I accelerate. Hope to get it fixed soon though... Gradually, I'm slowly modifying my car into a "chase mobile" - eventually that will probably mean that only 2 people will be able to sit in the car unless I take everything out. That's a little bit down the track though... > Ben Quinn wrote: > > Hi Everyone, > > Well i've had my eye on Monday for a couple of days now, but was a bit > concerned about too much moisture/cloud and rain... but AVN is realy > starting too look quite nice now, with a large area of low (down to -6 > last time i looked) LI's in NE NSW and parts of SE QLD and less mid > level moisture - the lowest area of LI's is shifting around in each > forecast as usual, but in general it's looking realy nice!!! > > The western horizon looks great at the moment - not much cloud and > some summery looking convection popping up! > > Anthony Cornelius and myself will more than likely be chasing - if > anyone else in Brisbane wants to join us you are more than welcome! > > > BRING IT > ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! > > > > Ben Quinn > > The Brisbane Storm Chasers Homepage > http://www.bsch.simplenet.com > The Australian Weather Pages Webring > http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/webring/index.htm > The NEMAS (North East Media of Atmospheric Science) Weather Education > Section > http://www.nemas.net -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Ben Quinn" To: Subject: Re: aus-wx: SE QLD/NE NSW Storms?!? For several runs now, GASP has been predicting extraordinarily low thickness values over SE Aust for next Friday and into the weekend. The latest run (00z) has sub-528 values over eastern Victoria on Friday and Saturday morning as a surface low forms in eastern Bass Strait, then the cold pool blobs off and runs up the ranges to be over about Wagga with a 527 thickness on Sunday morning, at which time 850hPa temps are between -2 and -5 over all Tas, Vic and most of NSW. I'd hold off waxing the skis just yet, but there is good support for the general concept of an unusual cold outbreak late this week and into the weekend from the other models, too, though they're not quite so OTT. All of them retain and strengthen the blocking high east of South Island NZ, and stall the high now moving in from the west over southern Qld or western NSW around midweek. At the same time, they strengthen a ridge connecting the two highs in a long loop down to around 55S -- in fact, both the latest GASP and yesterday's US model both have the highest pressure (around 1027hPa) 1000km south of Tasmania (!!!!) on Friday morning. This is an extraordinary looking map, and the consequence would be a long southerly fetch of very cold air directed towards SE Vic/NSW/Tas, and a slow south to SW movement of a developing Tasman Sea low. Definitely a situation worth watching. -- Laurier Williams Australian Weather News & Links http://ausweather.simplenet.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: wbc at ozemail.com.au (Laurier Williams) To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: aus-wx: Bureau's policy on free data distribution out on Wednesday. The BPS will give the Bureau's policy on what information it provides publicly and freely, and what it charges for. It is no secret that the Commonwealth Government has been leaning on the Bureau to achieve greater cost recovery on many of its products, even though these are gathered or produced at taxpayers' expense. That the Bureau's Executive has not found it easy to produce a policy is evidenced by the fact that it has taken over 3 years to produce a first public document. It's likely that the BPS will give a green light to limited radar being freely available, as well as a wide range of real-time automatic weather station data, both of which initiatives were foreshadowed in last year's Commonwealth budget. What remains to be seen is how much of the Bureau's vast real-time and archived data resources will be available freely or at a cost within the reach of the individual, and what copyright restrictions there will be on its use. I understand that the details will be placed on the Bureau's web site but wouldn't suggest holding your breath, as similar revelations have been promised on a number of occasions over the past couple of years but not been delivered. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Sender: jdeguara at pop.ihug.com.au X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Pro Version 4.2.2 Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2000 20:06:00 +1000 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com From: Jimmy Deguara Subject: Re: aus-wx: SE QLD/NE NSW Storms?!? Last April there was a huge warm AC drawing warm air up from Spain and the tropics which was giving 17C in Iceland - and incessant gloom here, if you need reminding what anticyclonic gloom looks like anybody there's a pic of it on my website (: Worst conditions here when you get an AC from the Azores to the Alps - gloom central. What are they? How lucky you jokers are over there in OZ. At the moment we have to put up with boring scundgy weather as that bloody anticyclone between us and the Chathams Islands looks like not going away and the bloody thing looks set to sit there for much of the oncoming week, intensifing a little as it does so.. Thats not fair!! I've tried to stick pins in it but dosen't work. Nothing much of note here in NZ. Lovely hoar/rime frosts way down Southland way from ridging from this annoying anticyclone. Nothing here in ChCh just boring weather. I could take photos of it and put it on the Internet ??? Maybe I should start up a boring weather society and chase ... >> John Gaul >> NZ Anticyclone Haters Association PS> I would love to revert back to the NZ Thunderstorm Soc one day ! Today here in Geelong to say the atmos was cofused was an undersatatement the surface flow was from 270dg 350dg between 10,000 and 18,000. above 25.000 it was from 100dg!. All this produced some rather wierd CB shear with tops moving west middles moving south and lower parts moving east. no wonder the models are not in agreement, this type of synopic situation seems to throw the models out with no line ups between computers!. Never mind i hope you all get somthing on Monday, i also agree with Laurier Williams that some interesting stuff should develop mid week especially in the cold air department. regards Clyve H. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------
